Kinda blunts some of their "Trump's too old" attacks. I find it myopic to make such a straight equation of Shapiro = Pennsylvannia, that is not how VEEp picks have actually worked pretty much ever. Harris will have Shapiro stumping for her all campaign either way, she will also have Scranton Joe. What the VEEP pick needs to do more than anything is excite the demographics in your party and on the fringes that the primary candidate doesn't. In Kamala's case that's midwestern suburban types. He has military experience which is always good and I believe he is more affable and appealing to a broader group that n the decidedly East Coast swagger of Shapiro. I get that Shapiro is popular on this Eagles MB, makes sense. But I believe Waltz will be more appealing to more voters and has zero downside while Shapiro is clearly disliked by the anti-zionist wing (fairly or not) and the anti school voucher wing (fairly). Shapiro also has the potential to upstage Kamala and has the ambition to not mind doing so. That would be lethal to this campaign, if we're not quite sure who's really on top.

It's a national campaign you have to win and the ticket needs to make sense and fit not just to win, but to govern. My opinion has been that Kelly and then Waltz were the best picks. I still wanted Kelly, but who knows what happened during the very important vetting process.
August 6, 20241 yr Really like the pick and I think Harris played it perfectly. Teasing Shapiro and pivoting to Walz will gin the base. Harris has much better political instincts than I would've thought. And Walz is great on camera and has a solid background as a vet and a former teacher.
