The problem is Walz has never outperformed Dem/Biden's numbers in his own state. Both Shapiro and Kelly did. Walz gives them nothing they didn't already have and completely screws up the top of the ticket going forward.

Teasing Shapiro (and basically sending the left into despair) and setting up a situation where the left is either going to revolt or celebrate and then picking the celebration pick is really well played.

Plus it furthers my fears that Dems are walking right down the same idiotic path the GOP did by appeasing the extreme until they take over. The far left's anti-Isreal stupidity is clearly why Schapiro wasn't the choice and likely will never be the Dem nominee at the top of the ticket.

Shapiro would have no problem reaching the top of the ticket. Moderate Dems outnumber the far left 5 to 1 and he could certainly take a primary. But the VP pick needed to gin the base and Shapiro wasn't going to do it. Honestly, Walz and Shapiro aren't that far apart policy wise, but Walz became the darling of the left as more of a protest to Shapiro, so picking him keeps her momentum up.

The crazy thing about it is that Shapiro's Jewish heritage ran a risk of gnawing at BOTH extremes. You could have stagnated the excitement on the left and simultaneously inflaming the right to go out and vote. There are plenty and I mean plenty of rural social moderates who were not going to be comfortable with that much Jewness on the ticket.

Bernie Sanders almost won this party, TWICE. This board grossly underestimates the importance of the far left in the Democrat party and grossly underestimates how much of Kamala's momentum comes from them. Contrary to GOp, the moderates are still in control, but they do not win without far left and black voter excitement.

They didn't pick Shapiro because he's an orthodox jew. It's sad that we are still where we are as a country, but let's face it, Trump has like 40% approval ratings so we have a long way to go yet. I don't see any strategic value in the Walz pick but he's funny and witty and quick on his feet. In other words he will "do no harm". I just think Shapiro would have brought more strategic value.
August 6, 20241 yr Was Walz who Pelosi wanted all along? That woman never takes a day off, always scheming it seems.

The far left is mostly white.

Our political culture in general is basically determined by vibes at this point. Sad, but true. The value in Walz is that he's the vibes guy, kindly dad vibes in a folksy, Midwestern package, and a guy who is liked by basically all of the Democratic base and even the left. That's what's needed: No division, just balls to the wall, "We are the good guys. The other guys are evil and weird."
