All the devs about to lose jobs thanks to AI will say the same. I'm not polling people I'm one of them and have many friends from the Big 5 to small startups who have as well. You people can tell me I'm wrong on a lot of things and I'll usually say I'm open to being wrong, but when I'm living it I don't want to hear crap. the reality of AI is going to start getting priced in. AI is not a panacea. it is not going to allow business to replace large swaths of the workforce. generative AI is a very advanced tech that is still looking for business applications that it can be relied upon. generative AI is on its way down into the trough of disillusionment. it will have an impact, but we have no idea what it is going to be yet. as usual the marketing hype is way ahead of reality. I know that's no solace to those who may have already lost their jobs in tech for whatever reason(s), but AI is unlikely to be taking tech jobs anytime soon. FWIW I use it every day often in coding. it's ok at predicting when I need boilerplate code and has been a marginal boost to my productivity. but it's not "writing code"; generative AI is advanced mimicry where it's cobbling together answers from people online to questions you prompt it with.

I don't get leadership vibes from her or the ability to bring different backgrounds or ideologies together. She is still young, though (politically) I don’t agree with her a lot, but I thought she killed it last night.

Some may be doing alright, but many are in deep crap right now. it's not a dumpster fire. but there's been a pullback for various reasons. the main one is that there was overhiring during Covid. so some of this is a correction. good people will get caught up in the correction, but good people tend to catch on elsewhere reasonably fast. the other is that companies are generally being cautious with AI. once it's accepted that AI is not the panacea promised companies will reluctantly start to invest in more traditional tech again, though AI will absolutely be mixed in. most companies cannot run lean on tech forever and be competitive.

I was talking about this today with a colleague. He is advises his daughters against careers in IT. It is a different world. I was a network guy, then a server guy, and now I do them both plus firewalls, security, virtualization, and a zillion other things.

Being involved in everything keeps you far more valuable.

Dunes, fishing, boating, camping, etc. I can see where it might be boring to families that aren't as outdoorsy but otherwise, plenty of hidden gems to enjoy.

Long term you either commit to continuing education and stay current, try to leverage success into a management role, or move on. I wouldn't advise against it, but it takes a certain type of mentality to succeed.

I see a lot of people who get into tech because they heard there's money in it. Some succeed but many don't. I'd be terrible in the medical field or as a blue collar worker on some construction site. I consider myself fortunate to live in an era where a natural ability at boolean logic and complex system decomposition are in demand.

I'd say that 90% of the reason projects fail is either a failure to gather accurate requirements or a failure of the implementation team to understand them. Mostly the former.
