People like Reagan, JFK, and Clinton could use their speaking and general politicking skills to get themselves out of a situation or to nail peoples a**es to the wall. The nature of the media and the speed of the cycle is more to blame for this than anything else. There's no consensus anywhere and messages resonate for hours, not weeks. It's essentially impossible to nail anyone's ass to the wall with one statement.
