And the great part about LA is you can choose to live in places (BH, Bel Air, Brentwood) that are safe and separate. I really like Monterey.

Even Palo Alto (around Stanford) is great. But SF, Oakland, Berkeley...total crap holes. Lived in SF for 4 years and hated every minute of it. Orange County gets a bad wrap, but Newport Beach/Corona Del Mar is just amazing.

It's also in the hills above Sunset, and criminals are lazy. BH has its own police department, and they really don't tolerate much. Brentwood is a little worse because of its proximity to Santa Monica. West Hollywood and Santa Monica have gotten pretty bad.

Oh I know it's safe there. I'm just question the "you can choose to.." part. You can choose to. Most people? Not so much. I lived in the Hollywood Hills when I lived there and it was amazing. Perfect views. Unbelievable weather. Anything you want to do. And it was safe enough. But Bel Air was a little out of my price range.

We were practically tripping over homeless people to get to where we were going. I was out there for business which was happening in San Jose (san Jose was boring but it was clean and nice) so we only drove to San Fran for the day. Couldn't wait to get out.

I have to go to Oakland/SF for work a few times a year. Oakland is legitimately a failed city at this point. I usually stay at the St. Regis or Four Seasons in SF, and they both suggest not going outside after dark.
