Trade him for a.... wait for it.... PUNTER.

I was actually a Barnett guy and thought he was taking the Graham path to be a late bloomer... That was 3 years ago now I thought that way.

I don't see how anyone especially after today's news can still be on board with this clown. Hell I was even on with him being a rotation guy this season but, I don't even want that anymore.

"DE Derek Barnett: The most notable thing about Barnett this summer was when the Eagles restructured his contract to make it more palatable in 2023. That’s a good sign that he’s sticking around. Barnett had some good moments this summer but some of them came rushing as a defensive tackle, which is new for him. And, yes, there were the aggressive moments and the shoving and the chippy play. Barnett has earned that reputation and he lived up to it in training camp, especially in the final joint practice. You always worry about the personal fouls but the Eagles like that edge he brings until that point.“

This is the comment from an article written about the roster and this is all they could write about Barnett. Sorry but none of this feels like an irreplaceable cog here. Can’t see how anyone would think the Eagles would regret it if they got rid of this player. The Titans trading away AJ Brown? Yeah that’s a move that they should regret. The Eagles moving on from an underachieving first round pick with a bad attitude? I think they will be okay. 😂 After all they have recently moved on from several underachieving first round picks and things turned out fine despite the worries of some.

I think the punter has more value. 😂🤣😂

I'm not worried about Sweat. He was a 1st round talent that fell to the 4th rd because of serious questions about his knee. The knee has not been an issue, so a lot of teams passed on him multiple times for nothing. Barnett is a reserve on this team and when he's in the game, I expect him to play well too. This is a team sport and everybody has his role.

Everyone has a role, but it would be a mistake to assume that a backup will produce at the same level as a starter especially when you realize that the backup was once the starter, but got demoted because he was worse than the backup.

Agreed there is nothing there that isn't replaceable. He can average 6-7 penalties... I mean sacks somewhere else.

I’d take a 7th rounder in 2029 for this underachieving, over aggressive, knucklehead. You could fill his spot in the rotation when more cuts around the league occur if needed.

After six years, he, like Boston Scott and Britain Covey, hasn't done enough to warrant his spot on the roster, and it's time to move on from these three players and let the next crop of Eagles flourish.

I'm all for allowing players to beat out other players for their roster spots. I'm 100% against handing an inferior player a roster spot just because the current player isn't an All Pro.

Regarding Barnett, I've already explained my opinion on him as a player in this topic. So here's my take on today's news:

The situation doesn't change my opinion of Barnett. It's very similar to Nate Herbig's situation a year ago. Factoring in the Eagles' history in similar circumstances the last decade, it appears to me Barnett will not be on our roster when the season begins. If no teams bite at a trade opportunity, I won't be surprised to see the Eagles grant him a release (which may require a mutual contract arrangement). I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

An 8 page thread about this player?!?!

He must be doing something right. Or something wrong.

He’s definitely not going to get more sacks than pages. 😂🤣😂

In short you don’t care. What was the point of whining and defending this dude for so long if you don’t care what happens to him?

He didn't say he didn't care, he was just saying in his opinion Barnett won't be on the team following the news. He hasn't whined either. Just stated his position.

We are both bored of reiterating our opinion that Barnett is a decent rotational end who can help the team in an important area.

I seem to remember you, like I defended Hurts last offseason when everyone else wanted to replace him with pretty much anyone else. And now you are part of the gang who want to rid us of a potentially helpful player, because BLG and ESP tell you he is bad.

The Eagles obviously like Barnett because they gave him a decent contract despite his 2 sacks the year before and despite the penalties. He got injured and Nolan Smith fell into our laps and now he might be expendable. I hope he stays. I won't lose sleep if he doesn't.

Nah this guy wrote books and compared Barnett to all pros and potential HOF players. Barnett is not like Hurts. Jalen every year has improved, and push himself beyond his own alleged limits. Barnett went from a starter to a backup and now he wants out. Sounds very much like a different Eagles first round pick, but Barnett never really reached that potential as a player, but at least he had his SB moment when the other guy didn’t. Barnett for me leaving is no different than Jalen Reagor leaving. Underachieving first round pick with a bad attitude. The Eagles won’t miss Barnett. They can get his production (or lack there of) from someone else.

You never stop trying to put words in other people's mouths.

Defending? Yeah. Whining? No --- that was all the sheep that believe 5.4 penalties per season = 2 per game and 2.2 personal foul penalties per season is a head case. You guys whine and cry about player after player that is on the team, but doesn't make the top 100 players list. Oh no... Barnett got heated with Dickerson in practice!!! "It's always him!!!" Oh no ... Barnett knocked the ball out of Richardson's hand in a practice that ended after Kelce cheap-shotted a Colt and the benches cleared! "It's always him!!!"

You ... are ... the whiner.

He's most likely behind Smith on the depth charts now. He knows his playing time is just gonna decrease. Honestly if I were him, I'd take what's given and chill on a SB contending team. He hasn't been able to stay healthy recently and this type of rotation is why Cox and BG are still able to stay on the team.

Nah I think you should send the novels of nonsense you wrote about this backup to Sirianni and tell him that he’s making a mistake. Then send him all those route running vids of JJAW and tell coach he deserves another chance too. All of your mediocre love fest do right? Heck since you think Kelce and Barnett are the same maybe Sirianni should get him a keg too! 😂🤣😂

"your boy JJAW..."

Maybe the Eagles can get a late round pick from the NO Saints for him?

I don't think it's as simple as Barnett being behind Smith on the depth chart. Barnett will be mostly behind Sweat at RDE, but rotating in on occasion at DT. Smith will rotate more with Reddick and perhaps play some joker and off ball linebacker as well.

If you watch the Roseman and Siranni press conference, they praise Barnett. That doesn't mean he won't be traded, but they make a few comments which make it less likely. Firstly Howie points out, as I said earlier in the thread, that DE is a position they prioritise and they ended up having to trade for Quinn mid season (and that didn't work). Siri also said he loved Barnett as a player and they'd spoken to him privately. I think now it's unlikely they trade him for a low round pick.

Barnett is 27 and has had 21.5 sacks, 76 hits and 179 pressures in 64 games. No that is not first rounder numbers, but guys like that are not easy to find on the waiver wire.

The Ravens seem to be determined to develop their young edge rusher, but after whiffing on trading for a franchise QB last weekend they shouldn't let another extraordinary possibility like this go by and instead send Ojabo to Philly (along with a mid-round pick if they want it) in exchange for Barnett.

You don't use a 2nd rd pick on an injured player and expect him to become a seasoned vet at the end of his rookie season. They expected him to struggle early, but he has tremendous upside which is why they feel he is worth the wait. They wouldn't unload him this early and definitely wouldn't package him with a mid round pick for Barnett.

Yea def odd. Seems this journalist was too happy to get a hold of the internet or they have a lot of faith in Howies wizardry lol

To be fair to the Writer Baltimore might be interested in Barnett, but would we be interested in a strictly 3-4 OLB who was a liability against the run in college and is unlikely to have improved in the pro's after missing all but 2 games of his rookie season?

When it comes down to it Barnett likely won't be traded. Highly doubt any time will be willing to give the Eagles the playing time Barnett wants or the compensations the Eagles are looking for. His best bet is to not be a malcontent, do what the Eagles ask him to do, and if he's eventually called to play in games then he needs to perform to expectations. The best case scenario for the Eagles would be this guy not having to play all that much.

So far this season Barnett has not cost the Eagles with bad plays or bad penalties and that’s a compliment. Yeah he’s still basically mediocre, but mediocre is fine as long as he’s not taking stupid penalties.
