I think it's more of a Coaching philosophy from Siriani. On Defense, don't give up the big explosive chunk plays. On Offense, try for the big explosive chunk plays.
December 24, 20231 yr Allegedly he has more say in the offense and at the line this season. Maybe let's stop with that, among other things
December 24, 20231 yr Its mainly losing Steichen thats the cause of this offense's dysfunction. They are still trying to run some fascimile of the Steichen offense but have no idea how to do it effectively. Thats why i dont have much hope of things getting fixed. Everything needs to be thrown out and overhauled.
December 25, 20231 yr The whole team just looks tired and slow. I think all those close games have taken a toll.

Although, it doesn't help when the OC comes out and says "we need more explosive plays". That gets into Hurts head, I would think. So then he goes out there and plays hero ball/backyard football by chucking up deep passes. While missing a wide open TE or WR3 or RB. UGH!! It's kind of dumb to keep trying something when it's not working. The explosive plays for whatever reason are not coming this year. We have one of the best kickers in the NFL. On average you need only 40 yards to get 3 points, every time. There's no excuse for this offense to be scoring so few points.
December 25, 20231 yr I’m not going to say that I believe Hurts is done, but for whatever the reason Hurts hasn’t been quite right all season, and the turnovers have been really poor on his part. This past offseason was by far his busiest from going back to school, his contract, the endorsement deals, interviews, and commercials. Overall he hasn’t handled it as well as he probably should have to include how during the season he would go down before he was close to getting hit and lose yards. Jalen has to get back to the fundamentals this off-season. He can’t keep turning the ball over this much and expect the team to support him and keep winning.
December 25, 20231 yr Maybe some people haven't noticed, but turnovers are definitely up this year across the board with almost all the big name QBs. Only a few of Hurts' INTs were bad decisions or throws and regarding his fumbles, they are right around his average: Year Age Tm Pos No. G GS Int Yds TD Lng PD FF Fmb FR Yds TD Sk Comb Solo Ast TFL QBHits Sfty 2020 22 PHI QB 2 15 4 0 0 9 3 -12 0 0.0 2021 23 PHI QB 1 15 15 0 0 9 3 -23 0 0.0 2022* 24 PHI QB 1 15 15 0 0 9 2 -13 0 0.0 2 2 0 0 0 2023 25 PHI QB 1 14 14 0 0 8 3 -3 0 0.0
December 25, 20231 yr After a game with 2 4th quarter interceptions to go with a crippling drive ending fumble against the Cowboys it seems like an odd time to act like Jalen’s turnovers aren’t that big of a deal.
December 25, 20231 yr Over his last six games Hurts is averaging: 199 passing yards 1 passing TD .67 INT 84 QB rating And truth be told, I didn't look up his rushing as that has been decent, minus the fumbles. There are plenty of tush push scores as well. I'm not understanding this notion of "he's only played three bad games this year" when he's been an abysmal passer for well over a month and for most of the season. The problem isn't necessarily that his fumbles are around his career average. They always come at the worst times, but even if that's all there was you can live with the fumbles when the rest of his game and the offense are a well oiled machine. You can no longer live with them when he's throwing interceptions, leaving a clean pocket, taking idiotic sacks consistently, missing open receivers, etc. Those issues with these weapons? With a shiny new contract? Not good enough.

Last year was the only year that he had consistency in those roles in his career, if I remember right. I think he's back to doing too much. Him not stepping up in the pocket and throwing off platform is coaching.

But he’s also playing badly I think and at this point we have to be a little concerned about him.

Also the QB coach is a highly underrated position. People like to give Frank Reich a lot of the credit for Carson’s success completely ignore how Deflip was constantly pushing him. Johnson getting a promotion means that Jalen lost that QB coach that was in his ear too. Johnson is going to need one more year.
December 27, 20231 yr I posted this in another thread The top 4 QB's in interceptions for the season. Sam Howell, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. The fact that Allen, Mahomes and Hurts are 2, 3 and 4 is pretty nuts. Allen and Hurts are also 1 and 2 for total TD's in the league. Hurts has been doing this in a down year which is also insane. Mahomes who most view as the best QB in the league has 26 total TD's for the season, that is less than Baker Mayfield, Russell Wilson, Goff and Love and tied with Tua for 9th place. It has been a weird year for QB play with a lot of the top guys banged up or struggling.

This year Hurts has 499 passing attempts for 46 plays of 20+ yards and 7 of 40 plus. Last year he had 460 attempts for 52 plays of 20+ and 11 of 40+. They have struggled to get a lot of the big plays down the field and I feel like the YAC numbers might also be down without looking at it. You compare this to Purdy with the 49'ers this year, he has 70 plays that have gone 20+ yards and 14 40+ off 416 attempts which is insane. His receivers have huge YAC numbers and maybe that is one thing they could be referring to with the explosive plays. The Eagles run a screen and have maybe broken 1 or 2 off for the season, the others look like disjointed disasters. They need to do a better job of allowing Hurts to complete easy throws that can become chunk plays.

It proves that they're also doing a lot right. The thing with this team is they hit lulls that stand out. I think last year it might have been the third quarter that they traditionally struggled in. This year Hurts has had more turnovers and the 2nd quarter where they have looked like trash.

It certainly doesn't "feel" like an offense that has 1,000 yard performers with both receivers and a RB, and a 4,000 yard QB. The offense I think ranks high in many categories. I think part of it is situational where we can see what should have happened, and they should be scoring more. I think another part is the offense will build a lead then the defense gives up points to make it a closer game. Had the defense held the team to lower points then the differential would be greater and "feel" more impressive. Lots of struggles on both sides of the ball, and this team was built to do more...yet they're 11-4 with the toughest schedule in the league. The 49ers had one of the easiest schedules in the league.
December 29, 20231 yr Yeah if the Seahawks, Bucs, and Rams all make the playoffs then this was definitely one of the toughest schedules I can ever remember.

We could win 13 games and with that schedule that’s incredible. And yet it doesn’t feel like that kind of season.

Turnovers and RZ failures are the main reasons that this offense doesn't feel dominant. Bad penalties creep in as well. A lot more shooting themselves in the foot than anything else. Sure they could have better answers against the blitz other than the slip screens but the aforementioned have been the killers in practically every game.
