EMB Blog: 2023 Regular Season... and Post Season Blog

Featured Replies

Sunday is gonna be the Eagles first signature blowout win of the season. They're much better than the Niners. They're substantially better at both coach and QB. Better on both lines. The Niners defense hasn't been as good as last season. Their pass rush hasn't been as good. They can be thrown on. Their offense is about the same. Eagles get up for big games and they're going to be up for this game.

Actually Hurts has looked pretty damn good from the pocket. Better than last year IMO. He has had happy feet when Lane isn't in unfortunately. Shane was more experienced in his final year with Philly (had 3 total years (2 with the Eagles) as an OC under his belt before moving on). I think Siri is doing a little more hand holding and it's probably not always a good thing.

We agree he is a better passer. I think that's because he works so hard in the offseason. It's not just happy feet when Lane isn't in though. I respect your posts and perhaps it's just me but he has seemed uncomfortable most of the year and holds the ball way too long. It is probably play design where people aren't getting open.

Last year Shane would call plays to get things moving when Hurts didn't look his best. As I said earlier, and Ike said on the radio a bit after, a lot of the stuff at the end of games is Hurts making plays vs Johnson.

Outside of RB and RG it's the same offense that got on top of teams early and big least year. With Johnson it's stalled and finally moves just enough at the end but eventually their luck will run out. Teams adjusted but it shouldn't look this bad the first 2-3 quarters.

If I'm Jeff I opening the wallet and paying what it takes to get Frank in here to advise like Vic did last year.

Is Lane looking likely to be out for the next game then?

Reich hasn't exactly been good since he left, not sure why everyone even wants him.

Because he was a good OC, not a good HC.  That happens to a lot of coordinators, who then go back to doing what they did well as a coordinator and have success.

Yes however they didn't include buns.  That was what held up the deal.

They offered a dozen Chicago dogs, but only one pack of buns. Which as we all know, for some Fing reason, that means they were 4 buns short of making a complete deal.

Don't know I'd put him at best, but a strong case for top 3. I'd really like to see him get some touches towards the end of the year. I just want a slot guy like Welker, Edelman, Amendola, etc. You know...shifty.

Yes, but I didn't see the fan doing anything wrong.  They were heckling an opposing team's player.  It's not like they threw something at the player.   This is the same guy that jumped on the 3rd and 1 to get a cheap shot on Hurts so I don't believe him.

From what I heard, the fan threatened to F Phillips' mama. Phillips saw what they were packing in the grey sweatpants even on a chilly night, and took it as a threat to his mama's life.

Part of the scouting report needs to include which opposing QBs are flopping pieces of ish so that the DL/LBs know to be on alert for it. That being said, Morrow needs to be smarter and just grab and hold instead of extending his arms which gives Allen his chance to shine.

I'm not talking about wins and losses. His offenses have been poor. I think it seems pretty clear the success they had in 2017 was more Doug than Reich, but largely a collaborative effort. Reich himself hasn't proven to be anything special as an offensive mind. 2017 is too small a sample to say he's a great coordinator.

A bit optimistic there.  Purdy is the second best QB in the NFC and while I agree the Eagles have the better HC the gap isn't as wide as you make it out to be.  We've had bigger gaps at HC and QB and haven't gotten the blowouts in those matchups this year.  This is the 49ers Super Bowl and they are having extra time to prepare for this one.

Wasn’t he expected to turn pro last year but ended up staying because of an injury? Maybe I’m thinking of someone else.

Yup. tore his acl

When Reich left, the offense was stale and predictable and everyone gave Reich credit.  Now you're saying Doug was the reason for the offense?

The announcers wouldn't stop talking about how big and tough he is and impossible to take down.  Then he flops like an NBA player on every hit.

Those redzone plays were awesome yesterday. I mentioned in other threads that defenses aren't playing the Eagles like they did last year and Hurts hasn't been as mobile. He's more willing to get down this year instead of trying to bust it out for some extra yards. Other than that the miscues and mental mistakes really stand out to me. Not sure that can be pinned on Siri and the OC. The RZ was really the main problem and it does seem that they are getting a handle of that. The slow starts though have to be the scripting and initial planning. Something is going awry there for sure. Then again a lot of the mental mistakes and miscues tend to happen early in the game. Like the players aren't locked in until there's some adversity for whatever reason.

The offense got worse because the QB went into the toilet. They had MVP QB play in 2017 and never got anything close to that afterwards. Also their skill positions declined. The "Reich was the brains behind the offense" takes were always dumb. There are way more moving parts and much more nuance than "Reich left and the offense got worse, easy deduction!"

Reich was meh with the Chargers, came to Philly, the offense sucked in 2016, was great in 2017, he leaves, the Colts and Panthers had unimpressive offenses.

If they bring him in I'm not going to complain, but it seems like people are romanticizing the guy just a tad too much.

Yep, that has looked better. I don't see any downside to bringing in the OC who helped them win a SB as a consultant, though.

He has the whole head jerking back thing going on too to make it look helmet to helmet.  Impressive acting especially in slow mo.

I think Brian Johnson has done a great, great job coaching Hurts.  I usually avoid piling on with opinions shared by the masses, but I don't think he is a good play caller.  I do think, however, that he's a really good coach.

3 OC's in 3 years would have a negative impact on Hurts.  He'll keep after it, but it's not ideal...no matter what people have to say about Brian Johnson.

I'd embrace a fresh perspective calling plays and a pair of 3rd round picks, but I think the stability on offense would be more valuable.

That said, I don't think he's getting any HC offers unless the Eagles win the SB...even then, he probably needs to oversee a high flying offense for 2 years, not 1.

Should have been "randomly" drug tested.  Sounds like 'roid rage.

I don't either unless there's a too many cooks in the kitchen scenario that could play out. I'm truly wondering if Siri's contributions to designs and planning are holding Johnson back. Some people have been calling out which plays look like the ones that Johnson has designed and run at Utah vs those that are likely Siri's designs. Johnson's are pretty cool if there is any truth to it. Allegedly the ones where there is motion or multiple options off the same look seem to be Johnson designs.

Well, Doug brought him in for a reason and they didn't look as good after. We agree the QB went downhill. Would him staying have helped? No idea. You are right it's not fair to simply say if he stayed Wentz wouldn't have gone down.

The Colts and Panthers didn't have a QB close to Hurts. I think he has a good offensive mind, though. Romanticizing him? Maybe...but he should get credit for what happened the Super Bowl year. It can't hurt IMO to see what happens when he can design plays for another QB playing like an MVP.

I think Covey should get some looks on our overused WR screens.  His presence on the field might be a massive tell for that play, considering no one is going to respect him blocking or running a route.  But they are obsessed with that play and it's functionally a punt return following lanes and blockers...he's built for it and can get lost behind big blockers.

Spot on and there is nothing wrong with that either. Nick is a good coach but I don't love him calling plays. I hope Johnson goes on to a lot of success and gets them a pick.

I think if he didn't have interest he'd have said something like I love Frank, but we're happy with our staff right now.

Reich being this years Marcus Brady like hire would make a ton of sense. Allows Reich to work with the current staff a bit and then he is in place and ready to go as potential replacement if Brian Johnson gets a HC shot. Would think current Alex Tanney is too young to take over OC job but perhaps Siri views Kevin Patullo as next man up. He was one of his first hires as HC.
