We need to run effectively, not run just because. But this is the same argument I’ve had in the Blog for a decade after losses like this.

9 running plays, 3 in the final 3 qtrs doesn't give the opportunity for effectiveness.  Sometimes you have to run just because.  Grease the wheel.

And yet, even if they do, winning out gets them to 14-3 and locks up the 2 seed.

The eagles have two losses the next closest teams have 3 (off top of my head niners/lions). If the eagles win out including Dallas they keep #1 seed.

So after taking a bit of time to reflect… I just can’t get away from how bad that was yesterday and how concerning it was too.

It shouldn't be too surprising. Niners match up with us well, especially with our current injuries, because they can abuse our lack of defense in the middle of the field. Then the offense is just anemic without Goedert and we don't have the coaching to make up for our deficiencies against good teams.

We were never going to stop Deebo, Aiyuk, CMC and Kittle with Morrow, Elliss, Reed, Brown and Byard as the center of our defense. Didn't think we'd get romped that easily but it's not very surprising either.

I just dont see the Eagles beating both Dallas in Dalls, and Seattle in Seattle....  We may win one of those games we are not winning both.

That being said, I dont think it matters, we will make the playoffs, but I dont think we can get past San Fran at home let alone in their house. We were so thoroughly outcoached, I dont see Johnson, Desai and Siri all off the sudden becoming innovative coaches in the next 6 games or so.

It’s inexcusable that they don’t stick to the run game. Completely inexcusable.

The one that I find funny is that we hire a LB coach as our DC and then go dumpster diving for his LB corps.

Not saying it’s going to happen. I’m just saying mathematically winning out makes them the #1 seed.

Agreed- just very unlikely

Two things that stood out....

Their Corners man handled our WR's they were physical and played a lot of man coverage and they WON.

And of course their LB's are leaps and bounds ahead of our LB's.

Thats the differences in the defenses.

There’s not another team in the league who would be 5-1 after the stretch that they just went through in the past six. They were simply burned out and outplayed yesterday. It happens.

I'm sorry - this is totally off topic.  This is the immolation blog.  We only talk about burning down the team in this thread.

The 49ers have a very good pass D and a poor run D. We came out throwing like we always do. Now our OL was AWESOME in pass pro. That's a great sign moving forward and will keep us in most games the defense doesn't collapse. However, we were missing Goedert. Julio is cooked. Jalen doesn't trust any other TE. Without a legitimate 3rd WR/TE option, you can't win that way. Goedert will help things, but that was a bad offensive gameplan yesterday.

I think they were just physically exhausted.  I mean they were coming off of an OT win where they played 91 snaps on defense.

Forget the offense and running game for now (even though I agree the running game blows)

You can't let a team score 6 f'ing TDs in a row.  6. In a row.

No short fields, just straight up arse whipping.

Sweat was utterly useless yet again. His entire side of the line got demolished over and over and over.  Desai was completely bamboozled and never adjusted.

Tackling has been piss poor for most of the season.  I lost count of how many huge gains they had after an Eagle defender had them dead to rights.  Even Brock Purdy was trucking our defenders.

If you don't think the Cowboys game means a lot after getting their heads caved in like that, you're insane.  They have to show up for this game now.

I think everyone would've been happy with a 4-2 record coming out this stretch. Whoever did the schedule and gave the Cowboys and Niners mini byes before both of our games can eat a D though.

The one thing that stood out to me is that they tackled much better as a defense.  The Eagles were playing 2 hand touch much of the game.

The Eagles have a nightmare of a schedule.

We lost 42-19.

You can blame both the offense and the defense.

There's just something totally off and not right with the running game. One of the best things about his OL is their ability to line up and just wear down a defense and the Eagles refuse to let them get in any sort of run game rhythm.

Not only did they only have 9 carries, 6 of them were in the 1st quarter. So the Eagles ran the ball THREE more times over the last 3 quarters of the game.

A few things. First, not getting TDs on the first 2 drives decided the game. The game being 6-0 after the 1st quarter was a win for the 49ers. The Eagles were doing what they wanted on both sides of the ball. The Eagles were killing TOP and holding on to the ball. They had it for 13 minutes to the 49ers 2 minutes. They had the ball in the RZ twice...and came away with 6 points. That's how you lose a game. You let the other team hang around. You let them keep confidence and you let them have complete use of their playbook because 1 TD and they are in the lead.

The following 2 series put the nail in the coffin for the Eagles. The score was still 6-0 Eagles before these 2 consecutive drives at the end of the 1st/beginning of 2nd.

1-10-PHI 33 (1:00) D.Swift right end to PHI 33 for no gain (T.Gipson).

2-10- J.Hurts pass short left to A.Brown to PHI 37 for 4 yards (J.Brown).

-3-6-PHI 37 (15:00) (Shotgun) PENALTY on PHI-J.Hurts, False Start, 5 yards, enforced at PHI 37 - No Play.

3-11-PHI 32 (15:00) (Shotgun) J.Hurts scrambles left end ran ob at PHI 36 for 4 yards (J.Hargrave; J.Brown).

4-7-PHI 36 (14:24) B.Mann punts 52 yards to SF 12, Center-R.Lovato. R.Bell to SF 15 for 3 yards (P.Johnson, B.VanSumeren)

49ers scored a TD so the score is now 7-6 and the Eagles need to respond.

1-10-PHI 25 (7:10) (Shotgun) J.Hurts sacked at PHI 16 for -9 yards (J.Kinlaw).

2-19-PHI 16 (6:22) (Shotgun) J.Hurts pass incomplete short left.

3-19-PHI 16 (6:18) (Shotgun) J.Hurts pass short left to D.Smith to PHI 37 for 21 yards (D.Greenlaw; C.Ward). P8

1-10-PHI 37 (5:43) (No Huddle, Shotgun) J.Hurts pass short left to K.Gainwell pushed ob at PHI 39 for 2 yards (D.Greenlaw).

2-8-PHI 39 (5:03) (Shotgun) J.Hurts pass incomplete deep right to Q.Watkins (A.Thomas) [R.Gregory].

3-8-PHI 39 (4:56) (Shotgun) J.Hurts pass incomplete short left.

4-8-PHI 39 (4:47) B.Mann punts 51 yards to SF 10, Center-R.Lovato, out of bounds.

2 terrible drives that the Eagles needed points from and they came away empty. The abandoned the run game (not that they gave it a chance) and the route was on.

Occam's Razor - The OL and Swift really aren't as good as they're made out to be.

That’s the other issue. You couldn’t trust the defense to get a stop. You have to be aggressive in trying to score points. Why be patient and run the ball when we sucked at it? Also, it’s why Sirianni should have gone for it on fourth down when we were trailing by two scores.

Easily his worst coaching in-game decision of the season. A complete lack of understanding of what was happening in the game.

I suspect this will get discussed in meetings this week, because there's no way the analytics team and Howie aren't against this.

stop trying to make it seem like it was a "bad" game... they got destroyed in every facet of the game.

Where did I say otherwise? They got their asses kicked. No doubt about it. But anyone would have taken 5-1 during this stretch a month and a half ago.

I think run blocking is both a persistence and rhythm process.  We didn't give our line a chance at either.  Two hall of famers, one whose hall of fame credentials are built on dominating the 2nd level on run plays and you effectively don't call plays to accentuate his greatness.  Two excellent pulling guards never move.  The whole point of our line is movement and getting to the 2nd level.  Our game plan effectively told them to suck it.

Our back 7 isn’t particularly physical or tough. Cunningham is tough, but has no finesse at all. Reed is tough. Brown is tough but has no idea what he’s doing. Slay and Bradberry are finesse by CB standards. Morrow is soft for a LB.
