EMB Blog: 2023 Regular Season... and Post Season Blog

The Eagles aren't as good as we hoped and neither are the coaches starting with Nick.  Seems like another year of what if is coming and Howie is equally at fault. That back seven is horrible. I get having to save money cause of paying Hurts but still. JP JR was there. Coming off a SB where a team threw all over them I'm not sure what he was thinking.

Season over? No, injuries could happen to other teams but the Eagles can't play the 49ers again or they are toast.

Might as well start looking to the draft. The 1 seed is gone and there's zero chance this team wins a game in SF. Last year was their chance but MVP fumbled the game away. Need to rebuild/reload and try again in a few years.

Great idea. You gonna tell the guys that? Hey we’re 10-2 … it’s over. Enjoy retirement and the off season.

Ref's ate their whistles most of the game except of course when SF needed another down and called a phantom offsides. That was a sketchy call.

The refs decided to let them play this game, for the most part, which is fine.  But that offsides call was awful.  And they never really gave us any sort of "makeup” call for that.

Another thing I noted which was beyond bizarre is that on at least 2-3 separate occasions our defense  stuffed the 49ers for losses on running attempts - between 2-3 yard losses but they kept marking them back at the original line of scrimmage.  I was like, "WTH are they doing?”.   Is "phantom/imaginary” forward progress a new thing now?

Brock Purdy just might have the inside track on NFL MVP.

Per FanDuel odds, Dak is currently a slight favorite over Hurts and Purdy. They might be banking on Dak having a big game next week which would make him the clear favorite. And given his track record against this defense, it's probably on point.

No but that is reality. The sickest part of yesterday is they weren't close to the talent needed

On the positive side, Lane put the clamps on Bosa again and Mailata shut down Chase Young. It felt like the both of them were pretty much non-factors in the pass rush. Hurts was well protected.

I agree, he wasn't running for his life all game. What I didn't really understand is that it didn't seem like he was trying to throw to a spot or to receivers coming out of their breaks much at all. So that means they either were covered really well or the route combinations weren't effective against the coverage SF was running. It seemed to me a lot of the pass plays was Hurts dropping back and moving around forever (several seconds anyway) waiting for someone to come free...almost like backyard football...Just didn't seem well planned. The first two series were solid. It's almost like SF made an adjustment and the Eagles didn't counter.

Yeah, the non-TFL by Sydney Brown comes to mind.

Two things that stood out....

Their Corners man handled our WR's they were physical and played a lot of man coverage and they WON.

And of course their LB's are leaps and bounds ahead of our LB's.

Thats the differences in the defenses.

They handled them all right...man handled them that is.  Every damn play there was DPI or holding on them.  The refs swallowed their whistle most of the night on that.  This after Thursday night where they basically walked Dallas down the field with ticky tack calls.  Some fn consistency would be nice

A lot of people go after Brian Johnson and the play calling but I think right now the play design, game planning, and scheme are bigger issues right now with the offense. We have been told that this is Sirianni’s offense and he designs everything, but I’m beginning to wonder if where this team misses Steichen most isn’t in play calling, but perhaps he had a hand in designing the offense and creating the game plans. Very few times this season has the offense come out of the gate on fire. Very few times this season have the Eagles schemed guys wide open. When the Eagles get a guy wide open it’s usually on a Hurts scramble where Smith gets open on an improvisation.

Then you look at the Colts where everyone picked them to win 5 games all season, they already have 7 wins and every week I watch them they come in with a great game plan for the talent they have and they scheme guys wide open every game and don’t have half the talent the Eagles do.

Maybe Steichen’s absence is what is hurting the running game. I don’t know either way I’m just throwing the possibility out there.

It's possible that the SF DBs were playing very sticky, but I like to find out what the check down options were - if you can hold the ball for 5 seconds unpressured something has to break loose at the NFL level.

A lot of football left to be played. Nobody is in position to sit starters so injuries will be a factor.  Who knows how both teams look in a month.

Disagree. They’re better. A lot can happen between now and end of January.

That's kind of how the offense has felt for a majority of the season. A lot of Hurts running around, playing backyard football, and AJ or DeVonta just getting open. There isn't a lot of structure and scheme to this passing game where receivers are getting open due to route design. It's basically the opposite of San Francisco's offense which is designed to scheme guys open and make the quarterback's job easier. They don't want Purdy playing hero ball. That's what Shanahan excels at. It's just hard to tell if thats a Hurts or Brian Johnson/Sirianni issue.

Better than the 49ers?

I can't imagine the 9ers looking much better and we have room for improvement physically/mentally/personnel-wise.

They are better than us. A lot can happen between now and then.

Yep. It's a hard day and a hard loss when we have to hope for injuries to other teams because the back 7 are so flawed though. They absolutely need the BYE to rest players as well

Thank you. A lot of people were licking their chops when SF lost three in a row. This needs to be a wake up call for the team. Let's see how they respond against Dallas for starters.

Yeah, CMC was tackled for a 1-2 yard loss and they put the ball a half yard from the 1st. Wtf was that. The spot after the first tush push before the TD was about a yard back. The overhead view had Hurts head over the goal line.

Reffing isn't the reason they lost but it makes a big difference when the defense is struggling getting off the field as is.

I agree about the back 7. This is obviously offseason talk but the entire unit needs to be rebuilt.

That's going to be a tough win - the formula has been to run over the Cowboy's undersized front and neutralize Mike Parson... not sure what has happened to our ability move the LoS.

Won’t disagree there. Gonna have to get a few breaks if we face them again.

Be nice to get a LB who can actually make a play here and there.

So when does Leonard make his Lebron decision?  Later today, I assume?

Again not the reason they lost but the refs were horrid or, more precisely, obviously biased. They missed blatant holds in the hole on almost every big run SF had. The obvious holds on the 2 tds by Deebo. AJ Brown got mauled all game even in the fn end zone...no call.  The phantom offsides that gave them a TD instead a fg.  They had an agenda for sure
