You also don't see 20 rush attempts for an average of 2 yards per carry because teams aren't dumb and run it that much if its clearly not working.

You might see a team rush 41 times if they can average 2.85 yards a carry.  https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/199110060tam.htm

Added note:

I'd active Penny. I know there's no chance they do it, but he's the type of downhill runner we need to attack the soft shell coverage we've been seeing all year. It's almost like the Super Bowl got everyone scared of us throwing it all over them, and we are refusing to just be physical. Put Hurts under center if need be and just attack north and south.

If we all of a sudden see Penny activated with him taking reps from Gainwell I would be extremely surprised. This staff has a hankering for Gainwell and I'm not so sure why.

Agree on all points.

Running by itself doesn’t shorten the game that much if you can’t get first downs. But maybe we would have only given up 35 points instead.

Look, no one in here are arguing to run every play. But 9 RB runs in a game...

Exactly.

It also goes to the next part of that. You’re playing the best Fing defense in the league. You are not beating San Francisco’s defense being one dimensional especially when since 4th quarter vs. Dallas your passing game has been all over the place and inconsistent.

Yes. Lets count them out.

1. Run on first down, pass 2nd and 10, penalty, scramble 3rd and 11. 3 and out, punt

2. Sack, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass. Punt

3. pass, run. end of half. Not even trying to do anything here besides run the clock out, so if you want to count this as "pass heavy and short" or whatever, that's a stretch.

4. Run, pass 2nd and 8, scramble. 3 and out, punt.

5. Last drive of the game down 23. Still moved the ball 55 yards on 10 plays. Downs.

Now please tell me how many drives were short or didn't end in points due to frequent passing?

Are your really being this intentionally obtuse?

Just like passing would have worked the 46th time!

Oh really?  Is that because the clock stops after a run just like it does after an incomplete pass?

Man, the both of you need to take a breather today,  You are both well respected, long time members of this blog but just off today, sorry.

Don't we need to cut someone to add Leonard? Did I miss a transaction?

I think Evans going back to IR covers that - could be wrong though

And back to your previous post, which I agree with...The DL, who they've invested in heavily isn't getting it done. The OL, who many tout as the best in the NFL, with God himself as the OL coach can't open holes for their RB?

Why are the two heaviest invested positions not getting it done?

This is a big issue, agree.  The O line isn't what it used to be.  They're ranked low in pass protection.  Too often Hurts is running out of the pocket when it breaks down.  There are times he has plenty of time and can stand in the pocket, but it's not consistent enough.  Their strength is run blocking and short yardage so they should run more and stick with it.  They need to mix up the run plays and keep at it.  Under center, traditional handoffs and less RPO, get the ball to Swift in space.  Even Gainwell is effective in certain plays.

On defense you're right, they invested in D line and re-signing 2 veteran corners.  They were ok being weak at LB and safety, but the D line plus Reddick and Nolan Smith added to the mix were supposed to have a dominant pass rush.  They should be crushing opposing QBs.

I didn't think Evans was ever added back to the 53, just had the window opened.

You're wrong. Evans has been on IR for awhile already and hasn't counted on the 53. Nothing changes with him out for the year.

The truth is, I believe, that Leonard hasn't officially signed yet. He's "agreed to terms". Once he does sign, presumably today, they'll have to make a move. My guess is that Ben O gets cut or Calcaterra goes to IR. Possibly Elliss too, although he's the kind of guy who might get claimed on waivers because he's actually a "plus" on special teams. A team in the hunt might like a plus special teamer for the stretch run.

Anyone who thinks Hurts is a bad passer needs their eyes checked.

I would agree with their passing the ball that much if the last 3 weeks and quarter against Dallas hasn’t been wildly inconsistent. You cannot have the wildly inconsistent pass offense the Eagles had over the course of 3 games, be solely reliant on that to become one dimensional and beat the 49ers.

I am going to say this again, you are not beating the San Francisco 49ers being one dimensional offense with a wildly inconsistent passing game. So unless you want to get another ass whooping in the playoffs, you better figure out your Fing running game and you better figure out your Fing passing game.

Some random thoughts:

1. The clip from NFL Live with Mina talking about us seeing a lot of 2 safety looks was excellent (NFL Live really is the only good show on ESPN at this point). No one dared try that last year because we'd run it down their throat if they didn't bring a safety into the box. We need to pound the run at the 2 high safety look and get guys out of it -- they are taking away big plays.

2. Related to the first point, we REALLY miss Goedert. The TE in the middle of the field is he passing game answer to the 2 high safety look, and Hurts has zero faith in Stoll/Grant/Albert O. I also think we should bring in Ertz who excels at finding the hole in zones. Getting the TE back this week should be a massive upgrade.

3. The OL and DL were just physically done in the SF game after the 1st quarter. I HOPE that was from the schedule and the long games, and they rebound.

4. This running game needs the RPO element to truly work. Jalen's going to have to keep a few and run.

5. I'd like to see more screens and other passes to Swift like we used against KC.

6. None of this matters if the D can't make a stop. Getting Cunningham back will be big, and hopefully Leonard can help. The outside CBs have been OK, but the middle of the field is an abortion.

Exhausted team missing key pieces got boat raced. Yes, Dallas will have a rest advantage and they should win this game -- if we can win it when they have such a massive advantage, it will be a hell of a statement.

Agree on all points.

Hurts needs a couple runs early to show the defense, because lately they've been doing it once they're losing to spark the offense.

Of course, if they would just run the ball more they might not need to do that.  Line up under center and handoff to Swift and the the O line road grade.  I agree about Penny, what is he here for?  Get him some snaps, even if he's a lead blocker FB type.  Or use Swift and Gainwell in 2 RB sets and mix up who gets the ball, get creative instead of so predictable.

Goedert's return should be huge.  Hurts doesn't have a security blanket when they take away Brown and Smitty and Hurts unfortunately wants to hero ball too much to force it to them because he doesn't really trust the other receivers, or doesn't make the reads to see them (or he's running for his life because the O line breaks down).

We need some quicker releases on slants and short passes, screens to Swift to get him in space, screens to Goedert to get some YAC.  And again get more creative, they're so predictable.

I agree with you on all the points. But that specific point is the reason why I said the biggest issue the Eagles have is once Dallas Goedert gets hurt, you only have two reliable wide receivers. You don’t work the middle of the field option as the rest of our WRs are just guys and our TEs aren’t very reliable passing game options besides goedert. If I’m a defensive coordinator (with goedert out) if the Eagles can’t run the ball and become one dimensional makes my life easier. I’m going to take away at least one of AJ Brown or DeVonta Smith. And then I’m gonna make you have to beat me with all these other JAGs and /brownSmith. Because I don’t think your offense is consistent enough to sustain that.

im an idiot GIF

Here's the video of AJ answering Eskin's question. Between this, the non-stop of analysts calling them frauds, and the insane take by Carr about Jalen...I think there's a chance these guys come out on fire. Hopefully they aren't too fired up.
