Those are all post June 1st cuts in 2024. I know you said you don't care about dead money, but still, in 2025 you would have:

$24M dead for Slay

$13M dead for Bradberry

$5M dead for Maddox

That's a lot of dead money while you are trying to rebuild the secondary and remain competitive

Right, but they have $62 million in dead cap this year and they still have money to spend. The real issue is spending the right way. Don't give contracts to 30+ year old CB who we all saw were on the decline. Don't lock up a nickel CB who can't stay healthy. Not worried about the cap implications at all.

And those are all valid reasons and it’s a compelling case… I’m just not sure this Eagles team is that good and that’s the issue.

We are certainly very good.  The question is if we are top two kind of good or just top six.

I think maddox and slay are gonna be back. I think bradberry depending on what they do in FA/draft is a candidate to be a post June 1st cut. I tend to think all 3 are likely back til 2024.

I think there’s a lot of name value of players that aren’t close to what they have been on the past. I also think our pass rush has 3-4 guys who are consistent likely wearing down and the rest have been MIA

I'm not putting a ton of value on the defensive players. I'm just talking about some of the truly trash defensive rosters (on paper) out there. The Eagles is defense is the worst of the worst in the NFL and they could be a more effective unit if the Eagles didn't have an unwavering commitment to the Fangio Fail philosophy.

See I don’t think we are very good. I think we are above average. In a very average NFL right now.

Good post.  That looks like an indictment of Brian Johnson.  Fire him already.

Our new OC?  Who cares - how about we let Rashad Penny be OC?

Yea, but that $62M is across 30+ players. Just those 3 players would $42M. And then you are likely going to have dead cap from Cox, Graham, Kelce maybe Lane Johnson plus others that will eventually come after next years FA's are signed to a bunch of void deals.

I was probably the loudest here beating against the drum that signing Bradberry and giving an extension to Slay was a terrible idea, so it's not that I don't want to replace them. I just don't think it's realistic for all to be gone in one fell swoop this offseason. Maybe Bradberry, but I'd think Slay and Maddox are likely both back.

Don't forget about Hurts too. They have money to spend this year because his deal didn't really kick in. 2 years from now it will be more of a restraint.

Think Gannon will be fired?

The fangio philosophy needs to change. It isn’t as effective as it used to be in the nfl. Even Miami it’s not as good against better offenses. Reason Miami has looked so good lately is cause they’ve faced a lot of really bad offenses. Miami has faced chargers, patriots, Denver, Buffalo, giants, Carolina, eagles, patriots, chiefs, raiders, jets and commanders. Only 2 of those teams were top 10. Both games they gave up 31 and 48. The problem with a Fangio type defense is that when you face the better teams in the NFL, they can beat you by methodically, moving the ball down the field. And paper cut by paper cut. The bad teams in the NFL, which there are a lot of them, you could have a lot of success. Because they’re usually mistake prone and not good enough to sustain those type of long drives possession after possession. With good teams in the NFL and a good offenses like San Francisco and Dallas they’re capable of doing that. It’s why it’s a philosophy that works to get you a lot of wins against bad teams and mediocre teams. But against the better teams in the NFL unless you’re getting a crazy amount of turnovers and sacks you’re gonna have the issues that you see the Eagles and dolphins have vs. better teams.

Maybe they're just poorly coached.

I hate to bring this up with a 10 win team, but the jury is still out with Hurts and Sirianni. They haven't etched their names in Scranton yet. They had an amazing season last year. 2021 they were decent. Not bad, not great, just solid. This season they've been inconsistent and frustrating. Just how good they are, we don't actually know the answer to that yet. They need to start shifting back closer to their 2022 iterations or things are going to get hairy very quickly with this team.

It shouldn't be. Hurts is the guy because of his contract. You don't give that kind of money out just because a player had a great year. If there was any doubt then they shouldn't have given the contract IMO

Now the eagles will think fans that want to fire Desai are stupid because this idiot went too far with the stupid garbage cans. The CBs are fine. Especially slay. They just need to be used properly and allowed to cover in man.

Wow... great write up by shane... mirrors pretty much everything this board has been saying and backs it up with stats. See the eye test does work for us 'casual' fans sometimes.

That's the question. And it's the question they should be asked every time an Eagles player or coach sits down with the media. I mean... these coaches have forgotten more about football that we hope to know. It'd be silly to think otherwise, right?

Don’t know exactly who’s all available in FA but I’d love to get jaylon Johnson cause he’s a long term solution at corner. Frankly i don’t see it happening unless the eagles and bradberry is willing to be moved inside to slot or he’s post June 1st cut.

tend to think the eagles make a splash. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s someone like burns that seems like an eagles move. Like I said would love Johnson and a LB like Josey jewell or queen

Let's see what happens against Seattle.  They were always going to lose a couple in this stretch.

This stretch would have killed the great Dak and Patrick Mahomes or whoever.  Let’s see his response the final quarter of the season

Hurts is a good qb the turnovers are bad but he still has 10 wins backing it up. Hopefully it’s a one year anomaly

No, it isn't.  You were out taking a dump when the verdict came in.  I think you mean Canton??

Well, that just sucked. It was the first time I honestly wanted to just change the channel since maybe 2015. There was just zero fight in the team at all. After having a night to sleep on it, here's where I am at.

1. We punted once and yet scored only 6 points on offense. That should be impossible, but we did it. Obviously, 3 fumbles in your opponent's territory is just inexcusable. Add in the 4th down failure, and that's basically 4 turnovers. We aren't winning any games like that.

2. Controversial take #1 -- aside from the fumble, Hurts wasn't bad in this game. Despite awful play calling he hit Brown and DeVonta in the hands for big plays against tight coverage more than once and they failed to make the play. He's still too dependent on those 2 and refuses to look at anyone else, but I can't kill him for this game.

3. Brian Johnson, on the other hand -- enough. Yeah, I get it -- the OC didn't fumble 3 times. But the refusal to use the RPO, the brutal 4th down call when you know you're going to get a zero blitz, the refusal to run the ball in the first half. You see guys like Purdy and Dak -- their play callers attack the defenses weaknesses and scheme guys open. It feels like everything Jalen does on offense is in spite of the play calling.

4. The ball off Smith's hands in the end zone that would have cut it to 27-20, and then we turn it over on downs. Ballgame. DeVonta has to bring that in. Has to.

5. The defense...well, I think they actually played better this week than last week. Let's just get this out of the way -- picking up the flag when Davis was held on the first TD was total BS. And the PI on Slay was ridiculous. That's the difference between 10-0 and 3-0.

6. Controversial take #2 - Slay was actually OK in this game. However,  Bradberry is cooked. Just cooked. Bringing him back was a mistake. I'd rather see Jobe, Ricks or Ringo out there.

7. Going to 2 high safeties is killing the run defense. But I think the bigger impact is the snaps these lineman have played since the bye. We used to dominate TOP, and now we are getting dominated. Davis, Carter, Cox, Sweat, Reddick, Graham -- they are all wearing down.

8. Sean Desai is an embarrassment to my people. The talent is better than this.

This team needs a total reset and gut check. Next week the other team won't have the rest advantage, and the Seattle D can be had. This will be the make or break game for the season.

Hurts has 4 wins over current division leaders Buccs, Chiefs, Cowboys, Dolphins

Not all is lost yet

I am hoping the interceptions are an anomaly this year. Because that number is already higher than it was last year. That said hasn’t thrown a pick in 2 games. The fumbles I think might be it is what it is. He played 18 total games last year (includes playoffs) and he had 11 total fumbles. That means 61% of his games he had a fumble. Fast forward to this year, he has 8 fumbles in 13 games. That’s about 61.5% of his games. At some point in time this is starting to become who he is. The fortune last year was out of those 11 fumbles. He only lost three. Whereas this year he has 8 fumbles and has lost 5 of them.

I'd love to see Denzel Perryman brought in a vet LB. He'll be 31, but he still can play the game. He's more of a thumper but he would bring an intensity to the middle that this team is lacking. He signed roughly a $2 million contract with Houston this year.
