Sheil's JOB is as a writer.  If he didn't mean experience, then he should have said so.  So, I am taking his post at its face.

That said, if you want to say that he is a Belichick disciple and those rarely pan out... that's a fair criticism.  BUT, I counter with the question:  Who's disciple is Desai?  And how many of them have panned out across the league.  The answer seems to be Fangio, and Fangio isn't exactly at the top of the list of successful minds in terms of developing guys under him, nor is he currently lighting it up himself.

Desai is relatively new to NFL coaching (starting in 2013), and relatively new to doing more than Defensive Quality Control (starting in 2019).   Give me a guy with a longer history when we see a guy with limited experience getting his head handed to him by experienced offensive minds.  I include the Washington games, where the Eagles D made Sam Howell look like a future HoF QB.  Bienemy had his number.  Shanahan made him look completely lost.  McCarthy also had him.

This move is no guarantee for success... but there's a CHANCE.   With Desai, the outcome seemed inevitable... defense would find a way to give up 30+ to any team with even a remotely competent play caller/schemer.

Ok. I’m just telling you what i think he meant by it.

Again, I’ve been saying for like two years that using the fans fangio model does not work nearly as effectively as the eagles think anymore. So you’re preaching to the  choir.  The league caught up to it. Because there’s more good quarterbacks nowadays that can Papercut you up the field and eventually score. There wasn’t as many years ago. You can still have  success with it against bad and even marginal quarterbacks. But it doesn’t work when you have competency a quarterback, and they don’t make mistakes. Which also goes back to Eagles personnel/playmakers to create those turnovers. Last year they made teams have to sustain long drives and eventually they got a turnover doing it cause they had the playmakers.

and I’m not saying don’t fire him. What I am saying to you is I think you’re gonna win the back in the same spot against Dallas or San Francisco in the playoffs.  at thay point in time are we talking about it not being the DC and more being your personal isn’t good enough and that’s been the biggest issue all along.

Patricia was available. They interviewed him for DC before hiring Desai. Then it came out later they hired him as well.

Yeah, seems like he was an insurance policy for Desai... or a guy to offer some advice.  Was Desai listening?   If he wasn't, then there's a chance for improvement (even if its only incremental).  If he was listening, then this is a nothing move on the field, but could be a massive blow to the locker room.

This is caring about optics. Just fire him and get him out of the building. Whats the point to keep the title and have him sit in the broom closet? What if there are players who like him as a person and will side with him over Patricia? Just do a clean break if you don’t care about optics.

Lurie doesn't want to pay him the rest of his contract by firing him.  They are hoping to Milton him from Office Space. Terrible look for the organization.  Getting really sick of Lurie as the owner.

So if they are just as bad in playoffs against Dallas and SF, does that mean it’s on paltricia or personnel isn’t good enough? If you change a coordinator and have the same problem vs. Dallas and SF then at some point in time maybe it is your personnel isn’t good enough. I don’t give a crap if they fired desai. If patrica runs into the same problem in the playoffs against those better offenses, then at that point might be a bigger issue with your personnel.

They can BOTH be a problem.

No offense taken.  No one is saying Patricia is a savior.  The only thing anyone has said that I've seen (or at least what I am saying) is that he can offer NEW LOOKS on 3rd downs, where this team REALLY struggles.  And if you just tighten up 3rd downs a little, the offense has more of a chance to have a margin of error, punts happen a little more, or FGs in place of TDs.

And if it blows up in the Eagles' faces... then so be it.   I'll tell you this:  Desai was overmatched.   He may SOMEDAY be a good DC.  He wasn't over the last month plus.  And, really wasn't for MOST games this season.

Don’t disagree with the last part. The last 3 games have shown that. However i also think coaches know the eagles have crap at Lb and a street 34 year old slot corner so they attack those two positions way more on third down. I would love to know the percentage that all fences are attacking our linebackers and slot corner on third down. Cause I’m betting it is a really high number. And that tells me even if you get Matt Patricia out there and he tries to make some adjustments, if teams like Dallas and SF still have a higher success rate than the league average then it’s likely because your personnel just isn’t Fing good enough.

Maybe Slay saw this change coming and said Fu** it I'll go have surgery.  Last I knew him and Patricia didn't care for each other.

Lurie is an issue now? LOL!!!

I don't think you can say they are SB contenders after the last couple weeks.  Those are the teams we will meet in the playoffs and they both killed us.

If the defense plays better from here on out then I can't complain.  We'll see what happens.

The goal and expectation for the season going back to last February was to compete and win the SB. That’s what I meant.

Step back from the open window ledge.  Your hyperbole meter is working overtime.

BOTH were. However one can be a bigger issue than the other. Have a feeling when we run into Dallas or SF again it’s going to be telling about which is the bigger issue facing this team.

It's crazy. Eagles spend more money than most of the league and he gets called cheap.

Both can be true.  The DC can be bad AND the players can be bad.   IF both are true, then the results will be awful.   But, we've seen teams with players that are just as bad, if not worse have better success than the Eagles over recent weeks.

Insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting a different result.   They can't replace the roster now.  They can replace the DC.  In the offseason, they NEED to upgrade the defense and maybe even add a legit LB.  (nah, that's too crazy. )

Slay needs less opinions.

This is just weird.  The Eagles have tripped over their own feet with things like this in the past.

The Eagles are 10-3.  I have complaints, but they are 10-3.  I support firing Desai.  I support NOT firing Desai and sticking with him.  At 10-3 and after going to the SB last year, they can do WHICHEVER they want and not be called idiots.

But you can't emasculate your DC and still call him your DC.  We've got the article on the secondary asking to do their own scouting (whatever the hell that means anyway) and Patricia calling the defense from the sidelines.  If Desai isn't the DC anymore, then make the move.  Coaches aren't players.  You can't bench him for a week to see how it goes.

They squashed it earlier this year but I’d be fine with saying goodbye to Desai and Slay. I’m on the same side as Seth Joyner, this defense lacks any physical presence and Slay constantly gets abused. He was nothing more than a 2-year asset via trade.

Exactly. It’s a half measure. Never go half measures.

I was just saying. I know it wasn’t you.

I kind of enjoy attacking the people no one will attack and defending the ones no one will defend...so here's one thing in defense of Desai...

Sean Mcdermott & Todd Bowles.  Both pretty legit defensive coaches who had very poor results here due to a combination of growing pains and personnel limitations.

It's bad when the best thing I can say about Desai is that we've had good defensive coaches who have failed here and succeeded elsewhere, but it's worth contemplating.

The major difference is that this was Desai's 2nd DC stint, not his first.

The eagles also played 3 top 5 offenses in 4 weeks. Not sure any other team in the nfl besides Dallas is gonna run a gauntlet like that (eagles, bill and Miami (maybe without hill)).

The beats have faced 2 top 10 offenses in 11 weeks. The bears defense looks vastly better cause they’ve faced a bunch of bad offenses besides the lions. this was the time goff had 8 turnovers in 4 games. Lions still scored 29 in one of those games. Lions also were hurt along the oline similar to Miami with waddle hurt. Do I think the Bears coaching has been better? Definitely. But i also think playing some saints, josh dobbs, Carolina, cleveland, Vegas (chargers game aside they’ve been bad offensively) helped. That’s not saying desai could do that just that i think bears defense is a lot of smoke and mirrors due to their schedule going from herbert blasting them for 30, broncos scoring 31 and mahomes putting up 41. Just like I’m going to think giants twice and cardinals will help us.

They need upgrade at Lb and more reliable slot corner. Can’t have maddox missing large chunks of the season and having to rely on unproven mcphearson if stays healthy or Roby who may never play again after this year.

Tommy DeVito getting checked for a concussion.
