No, I just don't have a literal interpretation like you. If I did, then all the rank misogyny and archaic attitudes on family life would make me a fundamentalist weirdo in the year 2024.

What are you talking about, where did I say anything about a literal interpretation??

The above example demonstrates that Jesus' teachings deviate from Deuteronomy, which was the law in his time and the more literal doctrine.  And your reaction was completely ignorant, "ohh fresh and innovative!"

Once again mocking your own religion to impress your anti-christian internet friends.

You know, or should, that Jesus' life established a new covenant and altered a lot of the existing law which was based on the Old Testament, thus creating the New Testament by which Christians are guided.   It's embarrassing how you're playing it off now to score internet points, but you do you.

I know it's not your fault that you're so stupid and feeble minded so I'll revert to spoon feeding this to you like I always do...

A two thousand year old text that says husbands are the heads of the household and wives must be submissive to them, is also archaic and should not be an explicit guide for how to live in the year 2024. What's truly embarassing is how you will ignore all the parts where this new covenant treats women as second class citizens while pretending that I'm the crazy one for daring to point it out.

Everything in the bible isn't to be taken literally, but you go far beyond that and you know it.  You're not just re-interpreting the bible, you're rejecting it's teachings.

I go far beyond that because I treat my wife as an equal rather than a subordinate. Got it.

Do you understand that Deuteronomy is an ancient Jewish text?  You're absolutely clueless.

Jesus' life was to establish a new covenant with humankind and that is why the new testament exists.

So you don't believe in the Old Testament. We can just throw that out?

No, Christians don't just throw it out because it provides valuable context.  Christians view the old testament as a precursor to Jesus' life.  Christians consider Jesus as the fulfillment of the prophecies of the Old Testament.  His life and teachings renew and change the covenant that God established with mankind.  He was put to death by Jews precisely because he didn't conform to the established laws of the time.

In every Catholic mass, there are readings from the old testament, new testament, and Gospel to demonstrate this connection.

So it's a Holy Book, it's used at church, but you can cherry pick the parts you like. While the New Testament is word for word? Or can you also interpret/cherry pick when to use literally?

Here is a summary if you're truly interested in understanding what youve asked:

https://www.usccb.org/bible/understanding-the-bible

Take circumcision, for example.  This was required by Jewish law. Jesus didn't directly say "don't worry about being circumcised" so it became an issue for early Jewish Christians.  They had to understand the intent behind Jesus' teachings to determine whether to continue enforcing Jewish law or not within the Christian community.

Jesus didn't provide a written manual, he spoke in parables to almost everyone except his apostles.  He did that for a reason.

No I'm not interested, at all, in spending much effort to understand how you cherry pick and interpret your magic books, only to come on line and skewer others for how they interpret and cherry pick the same silly magic books.

It's because you remain ignorant about it that you call it cherry picking and "magic." Not surprised at all.

well, if you went to church every week and received the body of christ from a guy who didn't wash his hands after dropping the cosby kids at the pool, you'd understand.

Blasphemer

It was written by God (he placed the WORD in chosen MEN), and is the WORD OF GOD, but we don't take it seriously these days.

Toaster is a self-professed bible scholar.

He knows he developed all of his morals within the framework of a Christian society but now he rejects all that.  He hasn't had his Richard Dawkins moment yet.

Why must you lie? I am not a biblical scholar, but unlike you, I seem to have read the book.

Have you ever? The whole thing?

Don't lie, Jesus is watching.
