I’m confused.  I read the article and when mentioning the holocaust,  the writer speaks as if it isn’t fact that the holocaust even happened and is up for debate or something.

Can someone make this article make sense for me?

What part of the article specifically? I'm not quite sure what you're talking about because I just read it.

Ignorant store owner posts ignorant bs on their instagram and gets "cancelled" (insofar as "cancelled" in this case means "I said stupid stuff and now my business will suffer")

Deplorable and ignorant.

Ok I get that much. But is that article basically discussing how offensive it is to use the yellow star patch and at the same time not acknowledging the holocaust even happened? I mean what’s more offensive?

I get that part.  I just don’t get the article coming off as if the holocaust happening is up for debate.

To me it seemed the author was just kinda tone deaf in the way they wrote it. It didn't seem to have been done with malace, more like ignorance and poor wording.

Yeah I didn’t get that but I’m a grass half empty kinda guy when it comes to people’s intentions.   It was certainly poorly written and ignorant to history though.

To me this is another "when being woke goes wrong” moment for the article writer

Again, what part makes it seem like it's up for debate exactly? Did you want more information about the Holocaust?

Who knows what Snoorda is talking about.

The end of the this paragraph describes what the Holocaust is - the deportation and murder of 6 million Jews.  The only thing I can figure is that Snoorda took the deference to the Holocaust Memorial Center's website in the article as questioning whether of not the Holocaust happened.  But the authors of the article just did that to be as precise as possible with their language - not because they were questioning whether the Holocaust happened.

Quote

Jewish people in Europe were legally forced to wear badges as far back as the 13th century, according to the Holocaust Memorial Center. The NSDAPs resurrected this practice, which facilitated the Jews' "separation from society and subsequent ghettoization, which ultimately led to the deportation and murder of 6 million Jews," the center's website says.

I mean, if you have even a limited amount of knowledge about the Holocaust, it’s obvious why it’s offensive.  The article is attempting to give a basic history lesson and explain why it’s offensive because, you know...   this is America.  Lol

Also, the anti-vaccine crowd isn’t nearly as cool as they think they are.  Unfortunately I got some extended family members in this group.

Oh I agree it's F'ed up. Just commenting it seemed like it was written out of ignorance and didn't seem like it was going that direction on purpose.

Edit, fixed grammar, I couldn't even understand what I was trying to say. Too much beer.

Every time the holocaust is mentioned in the article it’s quoted.   Like it’s not their words.   Maybe I’m tripping.   Carry on

Here’s how I’m guessing it went down:

Editor: This part about the Holocaust is kind of awkwardly stated.  Why don’t you just go to Holocaust Memorial Center’s website and quote them instead.

Low-paid intern who didn’t study the Holocaust much in school:  OK.

That's called a reference. Happens quite often in writing especially when using exact numbers. I understand why you're confused though. Backing up facts with references has been on hiatus the last few years.

I just read it more like, "some say this happened I’m not saying I’m saying that”.

Honestly, you're reading too much into it. It's a CNN article. That was most definitely not the intent.

Right.

And even though the the Holocaust is a topic that has been studied and written about a lot, most journalists are trained to be journalists, not Holocaust experts.  In this case it’s better to defer to experts than to say something stupid. Lol

Uhh, didn't you give a football coach the benefit of the doubt when he named one of his plays after Auschwitz? You said he was trying it to use it as a way to teach them history or some nonsense like that, no?

I did.  Because I couldn’t imagine any other reasoning for doing it.  Sue me

as far as this yellow star patch issue goes, I think unless you are of Jewish decent you shouldn’t be using the holocaust or items from it to teach or make any point whatsoever.
