Their stance is that they're just not dictating which specific writings/texts have to be required reading, but the bill does include required topics and founding documents that paint the US in a positive patriotic light. It does include requirements to teach the Civil Rights Act, the 13th, 14th and 19th Amendments. It prohibits teaching that slavery was anything but a deviation from the founding principles. It removes requirements of writings of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson as well. It also includes requirements to teach them to analyze the source, prevent misinformation and have civil discourse with people you disagree with and not to use any outside learning vendors that are tied to political lobbyists or activism. It does include a laundry list of requirements they are not allowed to teach such as one race is superior, someone isn't inherently racist, individuals today are not responsible for actions committed in the past by their same race, do not teach that merits or traits like hard work are racist, etc. They will have themselves to blame for turning Texas blue.
