Never meet your heroes, trumpbots.

Rising country star Oliver Anthony, known for his Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit "Rich Men North of Richmond," is distancing himself from the conservative figures co-opting his song, as he revealed in a lengthy video that "it’s aggravating seeing people in conservative news try to identify with me like I'm one of them."

"It was funny seeing my song at the presidential debate," Anthony said of the Republican debate last week in Milwaukee. "Cause it’s like, I wrote that song about those people."

"So for them to have to sit there and listen to that, that cracks me up. But it was funny kind of seeing the response to it. That song has nothing to do with Joe Biden, you know? It’s a lot bigger than Joe Biden. That song is written about the people on that stage and a lot more too not just them, but definitely them."

He’ll soon be lucky to open up for The Chicks.

Okay, so this isn't necessarily on-topic, but it is a uniquely American moment.

References to the year 1776 and the American Revolution have grown substantially among the far-right as Trump supporters and conspiracy theorists have hinted at the possibility of a revolution in the wake of Trump’s election loss, which they view, falsely, as illegitimate. Trump allies and surrogates, including first-term Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.), referred to Jan. 6 as Republicans’ "1776 moment.”

An online shop dubbed "1776.shop” that was founded last year by members of the Proud Boys, including its chairman Enrique Tarrio, hawks merchandise that co-opts 1776 as a symbol, along with other slogans and emblems touting the far-right.

Could be just somebody who loves America.

Could be a conspiracy nutter.

Who even knows.

It doesn't have to be fiction if you're committed to your art.

PART I: The Meeting

Dear Penthouse Forum,

I know this is going to sound like a crazy fantasy but every word of this story is true.

I saw a carpeted elephant walking astride a large, yellow, apparently flightless bird. I don't know what their relationship was. Were they friends? Lovers?

Whatever the case, I knew in that moment that I just had to meet that elephant. I'm not proud of it, but I concocted a story to get his attention.

I took a deep breath, walked up to him and said, "Excuse me, sir."

The bird leered at me with suspicion as I spoke to his companion.

"Can you tell me how to get..." I stumbled, "how to get to..."

  Did they miss the part where the Revolutionary War was successful and not a huge failure where everyone went to prison?

Yes, but the drag queens are still coming for your kids, and they are the real danger.

And in this week's episode of "Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas"...
