May 14, 20241 yr Did we already cover Harrison Butker's commencement speech where he told the women who just worked 4 years to graduate that they should be more excited to be homemakers?

A sad reminder that misogyny and religious indoctrination have always gone hand in hand.

Spoiler I am guessing kids called him "buttface" a lot growing up to have so many awful takes like this.

May 15, 20241 yr The entire idea that women should find the most meaning in being a homemaker is so antiquated and kind of sad. For a guy whose entire career is kicking balls through two metal bars to lecture women who may aspire to be scientists, doctors, engineers, etc. is laughable.

That idea has been the dominant one for literally thousands of years and has only received pushback for the last 50 or so. It's also supported by statistical data. Women have never been more "liberated" ie allowed to work in the corporate world at the expense of starting families, and they've also never been more depressed.

Yeah, I'm sure women weren't depressed when nobody asked them what they actually wanted to do with their lives Anybody is free to go be a homemaker if they desire. Nobody is stopping them.

Nobody is stopping them. Yeah, they actually have data on this subject, Paul. I know science and data hurt your feelings, but that doesn't make it less true. But yes, it is far more difficult to live comfortably on one salary today than it was in previous generations, not to mention modern society programs women to prioritize careers over families. So unfortunately a lot of women end up in in the soul sucking corporate world rather than as a homemaker, hence the drop in birth rates and the explosion of anti-depressant use in women especially those in their 40s.

It is always hilarious when this tries to be used as an argument. When did depression start being diagnosed? When did mental health start being taken seriously in this country (if that has even started)? Also, isn't postpartum depression literally a thing for women? Could it be because they are expected to take the full brunt of raising a baby 24/7?
