Exactly.

I think when Stick decided to stay in LA, the Birds pivoted.

  • For those that know me here I wanted to pass on the good news. I will be retiring from fulltime work in October of this year. Looking forward to not working 10 hour days anymore.

Ok I love the Barkley deal

Trading for Pickett also means we won't draft a QB this year, opening up more slots for other positions. We won't draft any specialists/QBs.

The qb factory never stops taking chances on Qb picks!

And you think Howie and company would have identified and drafted him?    Hope springs eternal, I guess.

Someone is going to fall they could have used at some position. He sucks. If Hurts goes down that isn't Foles 2.0.

No. His salary this year is $985k and next year is $2.6M. The roster bonus is all on Pittsburgh. so, two years for ~ $3.5M.

Even better - I missed that detail

I like this trade a lot; Pickett was a good prospect coming out of Pitt.  He's cheap, young, and can win a game or two in the very high likelihood that Hurts misses time this season.

He's an ideal backup in a lot of ways.  He's not going to push the starter, he's not going to wow people into creating a QB controversy, but he's more than serviceable for a short stretch.

The upside is we have a backup QB with starting experience behind a QB that gets dinged up.  If he plays and plays well, he could be flipped for much more.

Was there no one else available?

He's really good trade deadline bait for another team that has some QB injuries. We traded essentially down in the 4th round (our 3rd was a comp pick) and gave up 2 7th's for a young cost-controlled QB that has some upside as better trade bait down the road. I think we're all way overthinking this. I'm much happier with him than a Mariota.

We’ll see. I have a hard time imagining any team trading anything significant for him at the trade deadline, especially if isn’t playing.

The best spin I can get on board with is a cheap backup for 2 years that I hope never plays. Anything other than that would make it much more palatable, but will have to see it actually happen first.

They aren't going to trade Herbert, the Wilson and Watson craters have killed the blockbuster trade market for a few years, and Harbaugh knows it would be career suicide to trade Herbert to hitch his wagon to a guy who might flop in the pros, especially when they just cleaned house at receiver too.

That said, for all the smoke blown up Herbert since he was drafted, he looks to me like a repeat of Phil Rivers, good enough to get you so far (and get the fanbase adamant he shouldn't be traded), he can make all the throws for the weekday NFL discussion shows to fawn over but he won't ever get you over that hump, even when the sun is shining roster wise, he'll still find a way to come up a dollar short.

You’re severely underestimating how good rivers was. With most other coaches not named norv turner he’d have 1 or more super bowls.

And someone else will fall those 22 extra spots.  They have the same number of lottery tickets to use this year.   So, its a matter of drafting Nakobe Dean, or landing Kelee Ringo.   Same difference in my mind.

Lots of consternation, but backup QB greater need than flyer on random unknown possibility of a draft pick difference between 98 and 120.  It's at this time of year folks get all fired up over specific draft pick possibilities, but when the time comes... its not really a big deal.

No one is claiming he's Foles 2.0.  The hope would be, if it comes to that, for a minor injury to Hurts and he returns for the playoffs, but that in the meantime, you get competent play.  We have a RB to lean on now, and some great weapons around him, unlike the crap in Pittsburgh, and a legit OC/playcaller.   I trust that he could help them win (or more exactly not lose them) a couple of games if called upon.

No controversy? Guess again.  I'm starting the bandwagon.

Pickett for QB1.

The odds of him never playing over the next 2 years is slim. I view it as a cheap backup who has started. He's like $3.5M over the next 2 years combined.

Yup. The delta for that range is quite low.

I dislike the Devin White signing waaaay more than this move

I just don't see the upside. Best case scenario we don't see him play a single meaningful snap.

The trade and process in itself is "fine" I guess, although I would have just signed someone cheap and keep the pick.

The upside is pretty clear — a cheap, cost controlled QB with franchise player upside. If Hurts gets injured a disaster can be turned into a coup. Not only does Pickett keep our head above water, but if he plays well we could flip him for major draft compensation.

And what if he plays like Kenny Pickett?

FWIW, have a friend who is a big Steeler fan and he did not like Pickett at all.

Yeah. Amazingly cheap for a two-year starter who's only 25 and no threat to Hurts.

Reddick?

Maybe I’m just being overly pessimistic but that is a major projection. That’s the thing people talk themselves into that never happens. That’s less likely than "trade for a rental who will then net you a comp pick”.

Way too much logic here...🤣

This is my worst nightmare, all my friends are Steelers fans and I’ve done nothing but trash KP for the last 2 yrs because he sucks.
