I'm beginning to think that it does not matter whether they fire Sirianni or not. If they do fire him, then they will just pick Sirianni 2.0 to replace him. The only way to get an experienced, star HC here if for Lurie and Howie to abandon the idea that they know more about football than do real NFL'ers. That, my friends, is not going to happen.

Who would be an experienced, star HC that is available?  Those guys have jobs.  Guys that have experience and get fired are either Belichek who is super old and should retire at this point, and didn't win without Brady.  Vrabel who isn't a "star" but does have experience, and I think his GM did him no favors with the roster he had but he still wasn't a great coach. The rest would be former head coaches with experience but didn't win and there's a reason they are unemployed.

The formula in the NFL is typically hiring a first time HC who was previously a coordinator or position coach.  I posted this the other day:

Of this year's playoff team Head Coaches, previously not a Head Coach. 4 defensive background, 6 offensive background

  1. Ravens Harbaugh: DBs Position coach
  2. Bills McDermott: Defensive Coordinator
  3. Texans Ryans: Defensive Coordinator
  4. Steelers Tomlin: Defensive Coordinator
  5. 49ers Shanahan: Offensive Coordinator
  6. Dolphins McDaniel: Offensive Coordinator
  7. Browns Stefanski: Offensive Coordinator
  8. Lions Campbell: Asst HC & TE Position Coach
  9. Rams McVay: Offensive Coordinator
  10. Packers LaFleur: Offensive Coordinator

Previously a Head Coach: 2 offensive background, 1 defensive background

  1. Chiefs Reid: Head Coach
  2. Cowboys McCarthy: Head Coach
  3. Bucs Bowles: Head Coach

You have a better shot hiring a coach who has never been a head coach.  While most people want a coach with offensive background, a defensive background can work as well with a good OC.  It can work to hire a former head coach, but no HC has ever won a SB with 2 teams so you'd be hoping to break NFL history.

One thing is for sure we need a better backup QB.

Not sure the thought process for signing Mariota was but need a better option.

Mariota was pretty good, 10 points in a half after zero points in the half.

So basically, ESP wants the entire secondary back

Slay and the young guys can stay (Ringo, Ricks, Isaiah Rodgers is coming off suspension we'll see what he's got).  Cut Bradberry and Maddox, can't rely on him anymore.  They don't prioritize safety enough and they will say they're hopeful about Blankenship and Brown and probably sign another cheap free agent.

I would like to see how the secondary performs with a new DC and with hopefully adding upgrades at LB and safety, maybe corner (though I doubt Howie invests in corner though).

If Hurts has issues seeing the field and going thru progressions it's best to get an OC that can get guys open immediately.

That's another difference from last year.  He would make quicker decisions with where to go with the ball.

Hurts might want to see an eye doctor.  Why does AJ Brown wear neon shoes?

Choice between Dejean and McKinstry... nice.

Is it racist of me to say I know which one I'd be picking?

Malik Nabers #6 overall?  I've barely started studying prospects, but I don't think so.  I like his tape (he's very good) but I'm not sure I see a dominant WR there.

Which cover do you have? I have the Foles holding the trophy one. Also have the Randall Monday Night one in a frame. When I was in middle school I made my entire bedroom wall a collage of my favorite covers. Wish I didn't cut them all up and then throw away when I grew up.

The anticipation for the mail growing up...

I went with Ertz diving into the end zone. I bought some confetti from the game and put it in a shadow box with a photo printed of Foles holding up the trophy.

Is the Randall cover from the Monday night beat down of Dallas? I remember having that one for a long time but it’s gone now.

The Sporting News was so awesome. I would be so pissed when it came a day late. I needed those Mark Eckel write-ups.

Well, Johnson did lead a Florida offense that scored 40 points per game. Maybe the league really is putting all of this on Nick?

I hate the Rooney Rule. It is actually disrespectful to the minorities. "Let's force teams to get someone's hopes up just to check a box"

I also hate the rule a team gets 2 third round picks if a team hires one of your minority staff to be a HC or GM. Rule is racist. Not to mention wouldn't it be more effective if the team hiring the minority gets the picks?

Because none of the RBs are big enough.

The Eagles could put a versatile freakbeast under center.

It would have been good to get Kelce a rushing TD before he retires.

The Eagles should practice that play with a big/fast OL/DL under center.

This year got Hurts this single season QB rushing TD record.  A good thing.   The Eagles don't need to do that again.

I dont know how someone is going to be able to make the choice. DeJean is a legit outside CB but really has the versatility to play any position in the secondary, and plays a lot of special teams as well. Hes a do it all guy, who is also an incredible athlete. Hes not going to be the fastest CB in this class, BUT he is a high school state champion 100M dash, AND long jump. Hes fast, and hes explosive. And he has great size. He might be a little slower to flip hips, but hes going to give you + run support from the CB position.

McKinstry is a guy who teams will want to see run well at the combine. But Terrion Arnold is now being talked about as the best CB in this class and thats probably a lot to do with McKinstry being so good. Teams pretty much just stopped targeting McKinstry this year. He is a true shut down CB. He is the Joey Porter of this draft class. Other guys will flash with ridiculous workouts, and better INT numbers. But Porter/McKinstry just shut down half of the field for you. Thats so valuable. The floor on McKinstry is super high.

Its a really tough pick for me. I dont know if Illl ever be able to rank one above the other.

It's the first mock. You wont get anything close to the writers real projections until 2 weeks before the draft. All eye candy to kill time right now.

Below is what they're saying.

https://www.insidethebirds.com/philadelphia-eagles-nick-sirianni-jeffery-lurie/

Nick Sirianni
Geoff Mosher: "We know that on Friday, Nick Sirianni along with Jeffery Lurie, I believe Julian Lurie will be involved too along with Howie (Roseman), are going to meet altogether. There was a report that they have not had a conversation yet. As we understand it, that is not true. Sirianni has spoken to Jeffery, it just wasn’t in person. We know they have had a discussion, Sirianni and Howie Roseman have had a discussion, but today is the big meeting…It is our understanding that in this meeting it is Sirianni’s responsibility to present a plan to Lurie on how to rectify all the things that went wrong.”

Adam Caplan: "If [Lurie] really wanted to fire [Sirianni], he would have done it on Tuesday. At least going into this, just like he went into the Doug (Pederson) one, this one seems like Jeffery wants to keep him, it doesn’t mean he will. It comes down to this meeting.”

Jeffery Lurie
Mosher: "People familiar with the situation know the owner is not happy. This isn’t just a meeting of ‘Alright Nick, what is your plan? Sounds good to me, how can we help you out?’ This is a ‘what is your plan to fix this, I want every single detail.’ Then the owner has to believe the plan is going to work. He has to present a viable plan, and it is not easy just three days removed from the end of your season.”

Coordinators
Mosher: "We know through some sourcing that Nick is scouring the landscape, making calls, looking for people to bring in to be playcallers on both offense and defense. Nick is a CEO head coach.”

Caplan: "The stuff that everybody can see with their eyes: lack of inbreaking routes, the worst screen offense I have seen, they don’t run great concepts.”

Offense
Mosher: "The Shanahan/McVay tree, the Eagles have never really tapped from, but I get a sense that this time around that is what they want. They want scheme, somebody who knows how to get people open, function in space, get the ball to a variety of different players, not be predictable.”

It’s a fluid situation

Nabers at 6 is wrong. He's a top 5 player in the draft.

Give me TJ Tampa

Caelen Carson

 Q Mitchell

M Melton at CB position

Another aspect to consider with Lurie and head coaches is he probably feels confident in his own judgment and track record.

  • 3 of 5 of his coaching hires made the Super Bowl.  The team only made 1 SB appearance prior to Lurie owning the team.
  • Every coach he's hired has never been an NFL head coach before; a coordinator or position coach prior, Chip college coach.
  • Every coach he's hired has improved the team record in his first year.
  • Every coach he's hired has only had 1 season of winning less than 5 games and each time they were immediately fired on Black Monday.

Bradberry has a $9.64 million dollar guaranteed option due on March 13th. If they don't release him by then you'll know what their plan at corner is. There's no way they pick that option up if they don't plan to start him. You can't sit him when he's making over $12 million next year.

They *should* get rid of him because he’s not worth another penny.  That is $10m down the drain if they bring him back.  Should just eat the cap hit in 2024 instead of wasting that extra $10m over time.

But where would you draft him if you were a GM, though?  The way the board is set right now it's very likely CHI, WAS, NE all draft QB (Williams, Maye, Daniels supposedly).  Looking at the top 10 in receiving yards this season, you go down to Mike Evans and Amari Cooper at 9 and 10 before you see a WR drafted in the top 10 overall.  There's so much supply at that position.
