This isn't even hip drop lol. He grabbed him by the thighs. This is all so stupid.

This is what they’re banning. Call it hip drop or not, it’s grabbing the opponent and swiveling your weight so you land on their legs. Thats what happened there and what’ll be called:

That didn't even look that bad.

I thought hip drop was where they wrap and then use body weight to basically drop to the ground pulling them down with them

Which is about half the tackles. I guess it’s better to hold a guy up and have three-four guys come and pound on him.

This is insane. Refs having to breakdown and analyze the form of a defender as he's making a tackle in real-time is nearly an impossible ask.

Why not?

Because they have data that it’s 20 times more likely to cause injury

This is incredibly bad.  I think we just banned tackling an offensive player.  We should just put flags on players and be done with it.

So what is Logan Wilson supposed to do here?

And this is case in point, that just looks like a good clean tackle.  He went down hard, but that's football.

The way they keep emphasizing this will mostly be enforced with fines leads me to believe they know it's an impossible ask to get it correctly in game.

So if I understand this correctly, the illegal act is swinging your lower body into a butt facing down "sitting” position while grasping a ball carrier around the waist. But simply dragging the ball carrier down from behind will still be legal as long as your butt remains facing upwards.

Do I have this right?

Coming soon to a Chiefs game near you: Mahomes throwing his hands up in the air and whining about how that was a hip-drop tackle. The refs will eventually put their heads together and agree with Patty and give the Chiefs another 15 yards.

I'm so glad we got our super bowl before the sport turned to complete garbage. At this rate football will be unwatchable due to rule changes, increasingly frequent commercial breaks, and an overall watered down product

Can they even get their own agenda straight? First it was an injury 20% - 25% of the time. Not its 15 times out of 230.

6.5% per tackle is still a very high rate. Unless you're looking forward to watching Sermon et al at RB.

So defenders can still "gator roll". I would be doing that and breaking ankles then

15 yards and an automatic 1st for a common tackle is going to be hell

New rule could help Saquon stay healthier and be harder to take down is what I'm hoping

Well, he does "stand out," mostly for the wrong reasons. 🤣

At what point in the past has it ever even gotten close to that? It's not some recently invented tackle that hasn't been around before, but yea, sure.

This says unweights himself by swiveling. So if he just wraps up the receiver and drops then it's not a penalty? Is it only the swivel?

Lions were living in the future when they hired Dan Campbell. Biting the knees is probably a more acceptable way of getting a player down in today's NFL.

I'm still not sold on Fangino's scheme but much is to be seen with him running the show, rather than a student of his defense. If he's legit, my next question is how long can he be the guy at DC? He's 65 years old, no spring chicken but also not on his death bed. He looks like an old 65 however. I never would have guessed Steve Spagnolo was just about the same age being 64. Jim Johnson was brought in at 58 and gave the Eagles 10 solid years but you knew it was time later in his tenure. If the Eagles go all out in bringing in guys who fit the Fangino defense, how long will he be here running his scheme? Is he a 2-year stop gap DC before they hope to find the next great thing? I just hope they bring players who can play in any scheme so if Fangino doesn't work out and they bring in another DC with a different philosophy, they aren't gutting and rebuilding because the players don't fit what they want to run.

Three years is the life of a football team, after that you reload or rebuild. And if Fangio hires good assistants, one should be anointed the "heir apparent" and be willing to stick around.

Thats how I read it. You have to throw your legs around. If you just dive and grab from behind it’s still legal.

That's what they are going for.

What is and isn't a catch is so 2000 and late. Now we're in the what is and isn't a swivel territory.

Bryce Huff struggles to stop the run

CJGJ's weakness if you had to nitpick was tackling

Devin White was a bad run defender

Howie knew tackling is going to be irrelevant anyway so just pursued guys who can cover the pass or get to the QB. 4D chess.

Put it this way, if you were to sit on the bench for two years, would you prefer to sit behind washed up Wilson, an mediocre OL and a questionable OC or behind Hurts, a top OL and a top OC?
