The theory is that if you move it too far back you will definitely have teams that are out of contention dumping players to contenders for draft picks to start rebuilding as opposed to probably having them do it like now.

Plausible deniability.

They are afraid teams will make moves to become better next year. I'm not even joking.

Counter argument, it makes the good teams even better and the product for those games improved. And gives the bad teams more of a chance to be better next year. NFL over emphasizes the need for parity. No one wants to watch those bad teams late in the season anyway. Whoever is watching those trash games would watch regardless.

Heard some people who cover the team in recent days say they are pretty surprised the Eagles weren't in on Sneed. I am a little too. Maybe they just don't want to pay a 3rd corner that money when they can't clear Slay and Bradberry off the books for a little while. I'd be stunned if pick compensation was the deterrent.

Maybe it's just me, but this looks like it's just putting lipstick on a pig. I don't see how greatly improved this makes kickoff returns with so little space.

I don't think one play is a good indicator, but having less touchbacks alone would make it a more exciting play to watch. Kick returner just became a more valuable position.

Lame and lame. Although locally it still still be NBC for the opener.

That was 70 years ago, the game has changed a bit since then.

Wow.   Talk about missing the point.   I'll let you try to piece it together for yourself.

Until injuries start happening on kickoffs again and the NFL overreacts after one year and reverts back to the way it was.

Also lame. No one wants this. The NFL is really over stepping lately. Just forcing crap down everyone's throats.

I think my interest in the NFL will finally start to disappear once they inevitably move the Super Bowl to Europe.

The theory is it will reduce high speed collisions because the league says there is data pointing to a disproportionate number of in juries on kickoff returns.  TBH, I've never noticed increased injuries on kickoff returns; I've noticed increased flags being thrown on kickoff returns.

I feel like with the kicking team not having the build up speed it will reduce those injuries from big collisions

The NFL is working REALLY REALLY hard to make themselves even more unlikeable.

It's not like contenders have unlimited resources vs. other teams.  It's also not like teams get eliminated from the playoffs early in the NFL season.  I think the trade deadline makes the season more exciting.  Given the nature of the game, I still think it's harder in the NFL for a player to make a difference mid-season for a team.   I don't think teams that are not in contention by week 12 have a lot of talent they will dump. Look at the weeks teams were eliminated below:

Week 13: Carolina Panthers

Week 14: New England Patriots

Week 15: New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Commanders

Week 16: LA Chargers

Week 17: Las Vegas Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals, Chicago Bears

Week 18: Atlanta Falcons, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguar

The only team that engaged in a talent dump, arguably, was the Commanders and the best player they traded went to the Bears.   I don't think a week 12 deadline would have encouraged more teams to engage in the same.

Defensive players need to tackle the offensive players without actually touching them.   I was going to say 2 hand touch, but I've played in some 2 hand touch games that got a little physical and might be looked down upon by the NFL's muckety-mucks.

If this change reduces the insane amount of block in the back penalties for some reason then I'll be happy

Why does he have to make this difficult? Jurgens was picked, with the help of Jason Kelce, to be Kelce's successor. He's not a RG. This doesn't have to be a secret.

This is the season of misdirection and misinformation.  Doesn’t want to reveal anything going into the draft so teams are guessing at his picks.  Said this about C and RG, listed the multitude of pass rushers, heck mentioning Patrick Johnson before Reddick.  Mentions Baun as a target for his multiple areas of play, including off ball.  Says how Bradberry striving to be his 2022 version, while praising Slay following the best receiver and mentions all the CBs.  So the speculation of who he might draft, sign etc. maximizes his hand as to trades etc.

In other words, it’s Howie speak, pure 🐂💩.

Less space means it's harder for the kickoff team to take an angle on the returner.  If the returner gets through the initial line, there's a chance for a big return.
