It's been awhile since we've drafted an elite edge

A while?    Last one was Trent Cole, I think... in 2005.   That's almost two full decades.   And he was a surprise... No way they thought he could be what he became and yet waited until the 5th round to grab him.

Reddick also had 7.5 total sacks in his first three seasons and didn't have his breakout season until age 26, which again like Huff was in his 4th season..

Reddick was also an off ball LB his first 3 seasons

That makes me feel so much better with Howie's capability on drafting one

First off he was used out of position and second lighting rarely strikes twice

PLENTY of NFL players don't have their breakout season until their mid 20's.

The Phils bullpen is doing their best to take our minds off of the trade.

I like Reddick and appreciate his two seasons here. But, hey, he regretted the contract that brought him here. I won't be losing any sleep. Even with Reddick, we lost the Super Bowl two seasons ago with a nonexistent  defensive (team) performance (probably because of the field conditions) and couldn't stop anybody defensively in the last 3rd of last season.

Of course we'll have to wait and see how this defense will play in 2024. But if they improve statistically on defense in several areas next season, then there's nothing really bad about this trade.

I still think Nolan Smith may be a year away from really "breaking out." It's good that he had 1 season to watch and learn from Reddick up close. His snaps should increase this season and he'll get valuable experience. It's funny to read, though, the worried thoughts of people that are afraid to believe Huff can be an effective edge rusher here.

Reddick played 862 snaps, had 11 sacks and 35 pressures. Huff played 480 snaps, had 10 sacks and 33 pressures. Reddick wasn't all that terrific against the run in 2022, but I did feel he improved in 2023. Huff will now be expected to play more snaps and we'll find out how he is vs the run. I seriously doubt he'll be much different vs the run than Reddick.

Sounds familiar...

Silver lining for Parris Campbell. He can take #7 now and not be stuck in an 80s number.

I wonder if Howie was the one that hacked the EMB earlier today to shut the boards down so he could announce the trade.

Kenny Pickett will have his tiny hands all over that #7

Pretty sure Kenny Picket will take that.

Sure.  Of course, Reddick was a 1st round pick being used improperly, and Huff was a UDFA.   But, yeah... totally interchangeable.

Thomson leaving Alvarado in was ridiculous. The guy clearly didn’t have it today. Especially pitching against acuna after walking the 9 hole hitter. And then we go with brogdon is a gas can. This is gonna wind up being a 7-2 type of game.

Jared Verse at 22 is the perfect EDGE compliment to Huff/Smith and an easy Sweat replacement.

Based on the wording, it sounds like the conditions have to be met this year too. Sucks that they couldn’t make it include the 2025 season also but that’s what happens when you have no leverage I guess

That's why you just don't trade him too

Huff had one less sack in about half the snaps last season so sarcastic DBery or not facts aren't in your favor.

I just don’t see any way he makes it to 22

I have absolutely zero hope of that pick being a 2.

I have zero hope if he stayed and played out his final year that

A- we resign him

or

B- He gets a good enough deal to land us a 3rd comp pick.

So pick your poison, for sure 3rd rounder with small chance at 2nd or keep him for 1 more year and risk getting late pick or more likely 4th rd

If Verse drops to 22, they need to sprint to the podium.

We walked in a run! Phils baseball is so back.

What was that?   I don't recall it at all.

I can't remember which game it was.  I'm thinking the Cardinals game but might have been one of the Giants games.  It was a single shot of him getting upset.  It was quite possible it was just a one time thing regarding one play in the heat of the game but I remember it did surprise me.

I see he's learned nothing from last year. Rob Thompson will be the downfall of the Phillies, not the players.

Dombrowski deserves plenty of blame for thinking that an inconsistent bullpen that wasn't good enough last season didn't need an upgrade in the off-season.

I am fine swapping Reddick for Huff - bet on the younger player who hopefully keeps ascending. 2022 was likely Reddick’s apex. Add in the reasonable contract for Huff and it makes sense.

The aggravating part of this is that they didn’t need to do this. Certainly not for a 3rd round pick 2 years from now and 15mm in 2025 cap space.
