Probably.

I think it's kinda funny that people are penciling him in to match Reddick, roughly.

I understand the Reddick trade and I'm not going to lose sleep over it, just to be clear, but Huff has been a major JAG for most of his career.

Let's hope last year was the start of a dominant trend, but I'm not holding my breath.

I get all that. It comes down to this: you’re going to get a better player in a higher round than in a lower round. Several posters have shared the same point - that of taking a longer view will lead to better value. If you consistently draft better players you’ll be a better team. So, better to draft a better player a year later than a lesser player a year earlier.

I hope I explained that better.

there are 2 sides to this argument,  as you understand.    The other side is - we want the player now.  The need is immediate.

When the team who is getting the pick is a good team,  as the Eagles are, there aren't as many immediate needs,  so the better team would rather have a better pick in the future.  A bad team with immediate needs would rather have the worse player immediately.

Blank extended officially

One major thing to note. Huff has a ton less wear and tear on his body than Reddick. Especially the last 2 seasons. Very optimistic with him increasing snaps he will be fine. Track record is Eagles like to rotate and should fit in perfectly with Smith. Also he has played on both of the line in NY and offers that flexibility of moving him around. Sure they have a clear plan in how to optimize usage here under Fangio. Another thing I like is he has 15 pounds  and 2 inches on Reddick.

he's played so few snaps because he's god awful against the run....

Don't think the Blankenship move really impacts any potential moves for a safety one way or the other. He's good to have for depth, if nothing else.

Ummm the 2017 team won the super bowl so🤔

2018 team was a dropped Alshon pass from another NFCCG...

2016 was a rookie Wentz a game short of the playoffs so im not sure what year you meant???

Part of it is that.True. But Jets were also pretty deep at edge and can rotate to maximize results. Had draft picks they had to incorporate. Howie is projecting here and we will see if he's right. I think they have a nice young tandem at edge that should get all the snaps. On board with getting younger and faster here. And NOT extending Reddick for more than 18M and one year. Which I'd approve. That was prolly Howies middle ground. And Reddick wasn't going for that....

Blankenship would be a great 3rd safety. The Eagles however seem hell bent on him being a starter.

yeah i don't think it was "wrong" but I don't think he will "replace" reddicks production either...need nolan to take a big step which isn't unlikely

Blankenship is the most underrated defender on the team.  Catches too much hate.

I think he will get close to his 11 sacks and with way less snaps. Maybe he moves up to 600 snaps or so but be very effective in tandem with Smith. Huff got 10 sacks in 480 snaps last year. That's pretty good. I contend that people are enamored with 2022 Reddick version, which we will probably never see again. That's not who he was last year. He faded a bunch from Superbowl 57 and on.

"in spite of him". Every single player on the roster is someone that he picked!

No, no, no. He picked the good ones and the bad ones are because of Lurie, Doug and Joe Douglas.

Phillies and Eagles

Or scouts

That’s not a real extension for Blankenship. They just ensured he wouldn’t be a restricted FA.

After 2017 they got gradually worse every year until they cratered in 2020. Howie's bad offseasons hurt their ability to sustain success. Credit to him for digging himself out of it though.

This explains it better.

I think Howie's true Mastership as GM is how he revitalized this franchise from Carson Wentz debacle til now. And pending doom with dead cap space. And how quickly he did so. Earned my respect right there. This team's offense and special teams will keep it in NFC championship race for the next few years. On the whole, very satisfied with Howie's work. Top 10 GM for sure.

Smith replaces Reddick ON PAPER, we have yet to see that translate to ON THE FIELD.   In fact, it might very well be because Smith hasn't shown that he is capable of replacing Reddick ON THE FIELD, that they went and signed Huff.   I don't see Huff as a Sweat replacement... unless they plan to eliminate any type of a hand in the ground DE from the defensive alignment.   I don't think Huff played with his hand in the ground at any point with the Jets.  I think the plan long term might be to have 2 stand up EDGE LBs... and either one or both could rush the passer, or drop into coverage.

But, while they still have Sweat, dropping him into coverage would be more ludicrous than dropping Reddick into coverage.   Sweat can't run at all.

Nolan Smith can’t run?  In what universe?  Yes, we saw little of Smith but as Roseman said, they have to let the young players play.  Sweat was 251lbs coming out of college, Huff is listed at 255.  Eagles list both as DEs.

I agree that the Eagles are going to look for those players to have an OLB function.  But I don’t think it is a true 3/4 anymore than I think it is a true 4/3.  I do believe they are looking for more disguise and I have said that. That probably means Huff (or whoever else makes it as backup DE/OLB next year when Graham and probably Sweat are gone) or Smith (Baun and whoever makes it as SAM/OLB backups when Baun is up next year) will drop just enough to keep the opposing OC guessing and there will be some blitzing from ILB.

We don’t know what 80% of the D players will look like this year.  The Eagles have a better idea of what Smith will likely look like having seen his performance in the closed practices.  But like it or not the Eagles are, if not rebuilding, retooling.

My hope is that this is a show of support of him for the future as they explained they still like him a lot but are about to sign Simmons demoting Blankenship to the bench, sub-packages and special teams for a year or 2.

This is what worries me. That's a nice chunk of change for just a pass rush specialist.

I think either way Reed sees the field a ton with CJGJ in the slot more often than not.
