Sweat's pass rush get off is top 3 still. Not far off from Huff. He needs less snaps, as they wore him out last year. Went from 597 snaps in 2022 to 828 snaps last year. Smith has to be that 1st guy off the bench, kind of like the role Huff had with Jets. Can keep everyone fresh.

Robert Quinn is in the witness protection system now.

I never understood picking a play-of-the-game before the game is over. It seems stupid. I don't know. Maybe I'm just old.

I know that part I'm just wondering if  you've seen anything on Reddick's  contract extension, I still haven't seen a number he was asking for from the Eagles, just lots of speculation.

I don't know about that.   The extension from the Jets?

At the end of the season,  I assumed that Reddick would be back this year.  I knew he had 1 year on his contract,  and I assumed that he'd play out the year,  maybe 50/50 snaps with Nolan Smith,  and then he'd be a free agent.   I never heard anything about Reddick holding out or anything,  I didn't realize there was any issue.   But then they got Bryce Huff,  which meant that either Sweat or Reddick were going to go.  And Sweat restructured his contract the way the Eagles wanted,  so it was Reddick who was to go.

Reddick is small and fast.  He had a good 75 PFF at pass rush.   All other areas,  Reddick was worse.

Generally,  small and fast correlates well with good pass rush.    I personally think that if all you want out of a player is great pass rush,  there are cheaper ways to get great pass rush.  I think the Eagles, or any other team, really,  should try having a "pass rusher"  different from "edge" and have the pass rusher rush from different places often.   And that "pass rusher" is a new position,  OLBs would probably be good at it,  but if all you're asking for is pass rush,  you could find "pass rusher" in a lot of different spots.   I'd look at running back.   Running backs are the experts at getting from one side of the line to the other.   An inside linebacker who doesn't have to cover or stop the run, but who needed to get through the line to make a sack,  could be small,  a short RB who runs really fast,  who isn't too frail, with good or great 3 cone and shuttle.

Instead of 5 on the line.   4 on the line and one rushing from anywhere.  Instead of 4,  3 and one in back.  3 in the front,  2 in the back.

Draft T'V Sweat,  366 pounds.  Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, T'V Sweat are the 3 man line.  One of those 3 isn't going to be double teamed.  And then you have Nolan Smith at some sort of "pass rusher" in a ILB spot.  Nolan Smith isn't the biggest and probably doesn't have top upper body strength,  but is very fast,  with a great 10 split, and has strong legs.   Having him get a running start might help him get sacks. Some guard is helping double team Davis Carter or Sweat,  and Nolan Smith is running by really fast. They might be able to leave the DT, and block Nolan from an ILB spot,  but that should work pretty often.  Engaging a player with a double team, and then someone like Nolan Smith, but a short quick fast RB could work too, or anybody.  Try to see what Jordan Mailata can do from that ILB pass rusher spot.   Many OLs can add extra size to the defense and could take up double teams.  If Mailata was at NT,  he'd take double teams,  he'd march the Center back.

"pass rusher" could be filled by any and all of the LBs,  OLBs,  ILBs.  But also anybody else.  If you can have a large rotation of ILB, OLB,  Mailata, running backs, Gainwell, someone that you draft or udfa who had sacks in high school and now is a running back.

Justin Strong, RB,  Southern Illinois,  supposedly - it's on RAS - had a 1.44 10 split.  You'd want that in a pass rusher.  He had a 6.65 3 cone. and 4.05 shuttle. 206 pounds.   And,  in high school,

HIGH SCHOOL

Illinois Coaches Association All-State honoree as a senior ... Finished his career with 460 tackles and 23 sacks ... Three-time All-Area, All-City, and All-South Seven Conference selection ... Althoff Defensive Player of the Year in 2017 ... Ran for 978 yards and 11 touchdowns on 76 carries ... Led 2017 team with six interceptions and recorded 43 tackles ... Honor Roll student who was involved in FCA, the Engineering Club, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

He was on defense in his 2nd year at Southern Illinois,  and is a running back now.  those 1.44,  6.65 and 4.05 numbers would all be great for a pass rusher, and 206 pounds isn't too light. And running back.  UDFA.   Special teams,  did return kickoffs in college.

Here he is, in college,  playing Safety, and getting 3 interceptions in a game.  Now,  he's a running back who catches a good number of passes.

Glad to see the Phillies fixed their base running issues.

I know we've discussed this stat before but it was just posted so revisiting. Would have loved to see a healthy Wentz with guys like AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith.

The time to fire Howie was after the 2020 off-season. Everyone was on board. No one would have pushed back. We'd have to go 3-14 for Howie to get fired after 2024.

Nah, if the team has the same issues in the back 7 and they get bumped in the wild card round again it would be incredibly easy to justify a firing

They made no effort to fix it, they kept the same roster.

Phillies fans I talked to were naive enough to think they'd come into the season with all their problems fix. A leopard doesn't change its stripes. Hitters don't break their tendencies and bad base runners typically stay bad. If you want to fix the issues, you need to fix the players. The Phillies took the approach of we'll coach it out of them in spring training. Good luck with that lol.

A healthy, pre Seattle game concussion, Wentz maybe…wasn’t the same after that

Legitimately one of the most impressive NFL stats. Dude could've been great, but the clowney hit was just the final nail in the coffin

His collapse was cringeworthy

I wouldn't call it cringeworthy. I'd call it extremely unfortunate. He tore his ACL, broke his back and had a severe concussion all while throwing to Gred Ward and Travis Fulgham. Just another of the long line of what ifs in Philly sports.

Im really curious about him these days. And last season I was laughing any time people said any team should sign him. But he looked really good in person at the Rams/Giants game, and then the following week he got the start when the rams rested starters. Looked good in game action too.

I really thought he would get signed fairly early on this free agency period as a backup somewhere. And he is still sitting on the market.

I wonder if, performance aside, he still wasnt that good of a locker room guy? Its odd not even the Rams signed him back after he did well for them.

I really think there is a chance his ability has returned to a reasonable level, but Im wondering if his personality is keeping him out of a job.

If the Bears are set on drafting Caleb Williams and starting him Week 1, Wentz would be a logical guy to have as an experienced backup QB.  Tyson Bagent is basically all they have on the roster as of now.

FYI, that tweet was over a year old and based on 2022 data.

As for Smith, I don't necessarily think he needs the Jets' Huff role. Huff, in his role was strictly a pass rusher. Smith is still developing that part of his game. He was an effective run defender in college, so it might be better to actually "start" Smith and play him on early downs and bring Huff in with fresh legs as a pass rusher like the Jets did. Of course the Eagles should test expanding Huff's role to see if he can have more of a role like Reddick had here. But based on the known strengths of Smith and Huff, I don't think you want Smith to have the "situational pass rusher" role and I don't think you want to have Huff off the field on obvious passing downs.

He's also set for life and has quite a few business endeavors outside of football. Maybe he's content with life and would rather focus on life after football. If the right situation comes up, maybe he signs with a team, but I can also just see him fading in to the sunset and hanging them up.

He's been an outcast in pretty much every locker room that he's been a part of. That seems to play a bigger role in the downfall of this career if anything.

That’s a really good signing for them. It’s pretty ridiculous that he had to wait so long for a job. He’s better than most backups.

Imagine Mahomes goes down and Wentz wins them a SB

Wentz’ Christian, hunting, gun toting persona led to the media turning on him.  Was he stubborn in the locker room and did he take poorly to Hurts getting drafted?  Probably, but that would happen to most starting QBs dealing with back-to-back-to-back major injuries and working with Greg Ward and Travis Fulgam as their 1a/1b.

That experience totally broke him.  It’s really tough for any qb to get back on track when their formative years go sideways.

It was time to move on when they did…no doubt about it.  But the whole situation was botched by both Wentz and the Eagles and should have gone differently.
