Yea we had to trade out of the 3rd for our backup and people still say it was a good use of recources.

Wentz is old but him under Reid was one of the "what if’s” I thought of. He won’t come close to filling in for Mahomes but he’s a better backup than Gabbert.

Speak of the devil

I’m not sure how many backups are clearly better than him. Even stretching it, it’s Brissett, Winston, Fields, Flacco, Howell, Tannehill (once he signs), Jimmy G, Mac Jones.

It’s really weird that he’s struggling to find a job. There aren’t many good backup QBs at all.

Wentz’ Christian, hunting, gun toting persona led to the media turning on him.  Was he stubborn in the locker room and did he take poorly to Hurts getting drafted?  Probably, but that would happen to most starting QBs dealing with back-to-back-to-back major injuries and working with Greg Ward and Travis Fulgam as their 1a/1b.

That experience totally broke him.  It’s really tough for any qb to get back on track when their formative years go sideways.

It was time to move on when they did…no doubt about it.  But the whole situation was botched by both Wentz and the Eagles and should have gone differently.

They didn’t do him any favors in 2019 and 2020. Alshon broke down, the DeSean signing didn’t work out, and Reagor flopped. They probably win that playoff game in 2019 against Seattle if he doesn’t get the headshot from Clowney. That’s a franchise altering "what if” moment because they probably don’t draft Hurts if Wentz won a playoff game. And there might be a world where they end up getting DeVonta and AJ for Wentz after the 2020 season disaster.

I’ll always be biased towards Wentz as far as being a fan of him. Maybe there was some truth to the locker room issues because it seemed like it was a similar issue in Indy. But I don’t recall seeing or reading anything negative about his time in Washington. I’ll always pull for him. It was the right move to move on from him, but he was mentally and physically fried in his time here.

He has the luxury to be picky. He’s still young for a QB, has made all his money, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence he’s chosen two of the best offensive coaches in McVay and Reid to learn under. He’s in a reclamation project phase of his career and someone might bite on him as a bridge starter in 2025 if he gets an opportunity to show continued improvement this year.

Well there’s no doubt the Chiefs have the most talented QB room

Maybe he’s picky, but he wanted to sign with the Jets after Rodgers got hurt and they had no interest in him.

FWIW.

Fringe starter ability, superstar attitude.

If anyone is an expert in being a backup QB getting paid way more than he's worth... it's Chase Daniel.

I'm happy for Wentz.

First time trying the draft simulator…rejected all trades my first time around just to see what would happen.

Yes, but he doesn't want to be a backup. He's at least in a place where there's no chance he'll ever play unless injury happens.

I think he doesn't want to be a backup just anywhere.  And who can blame him?  He doesn't need the money.  And he can choose where to go.   If I were in his shoes... backing up Stafford or Mahomes would be far preferable to backing up Tannehill or Carr.   Take a chance at getting a ring, get some more money, have fun along the way during the season.

Jalen Carter. What's so hard to figure out?

Everyone here loves Chiefs signing Wentz as a backup now but when I was saying last year and this offseason they should sign Wentz as backup it was nothing but hate.

Simmons today?

POSITIVES

— Quick to come downhill and close the gap between him and the ball-carrier. Fills the running lanes and isn't afraid to play his position.

— Very good in zone coverage. Plays with the necessary awareness underneath coverage and feel when dropping.

— Shows good positioning and leverage in zone coverage. Able to stay on top of routes when he has cushion and can see routes develop.

OVERALL

Andru Phillips was one of Kentucky's top defensive backs in the 2023 season. He has a good blend of length and athleticism, combined with the versatility to play the outside cornerback and slot positions. Throughout his career, he has shown the ability to be a core special teams player.

When playing in pass coverage, Phillips is at best when in off zone coverage, where he's able to use his awareness and vision to identify routes as they develop downfield. He has above-average speed but can fall into trouble with his lack of recovery speed and top-end speed to run downfield. He performs best when he has help over the top and is able to play in underneath coverage.

Combine - 5 foot 11 and 190 pounds.  4.48 40 time and explosive leaper.  42 inch vert (3rd for CB's) and 135 broad which was 2nd for CB's and 4th overall at combine.

Pro Day - 16 reps for bench

Daniel Jeremiah called him a "war daddy,” something he said he labels one or two players a year.

If he wasn't Kentucky's top DB then why not have a top 30 with their top DB?

This is what Zerlein says about him on his combine and scouting report page

Phillips' tape features a high number of both completions and drops that should have been completions, but that could change in a different scheme and with additional experience. He's still green, with just two years of real game experience, and often played too loose in Kentucky's zone cover schemes. Phillips lacks the anticipation to contest catches at a high enough rate from zone but does have the athleticism to play more man coverage, with the tools to stay sticky on routes. He's an ardent run supporter with excellent toughness but needs to finish tackles at a higher rate. Scheme fit might be critical, along with proving he can play from the slot, but his best football could be ahead of him.
