Sports would be better off if more teams and GMs stopped catering to the whims of grumpy players under contract not being happy. The reality of this is hurting sports possibly more than any other thing. It's made the NBA virtually unenjoyable(in my opinion).

That said if I were Howie, I would have given him his extension, freed up cap collars for 2024, used that money to go out and sign a better LB(or two) than they did, or trade for a corner, and my defense, at least in the short term, would be drastically improved.

Because of the Eagles shenanigans messing around with edge, they basically used their top free agent signing to fill a hole they themselves created. Detracting from possibilities they could have spent elsewhere. Once the season ended I was hoping for significant upgrades to the defense and they simply have not made those if you factor in Cox and Reddick leaving.

My plan, albeit with some risk long-term, would have the Eagles better positioned to win a Lombardi in 2024.

Restructured Reddick, Jordyn Brooks, Azeez Al Shaair, CJGJ >>> what the Eagles did IMO. That's what I would have preferred him do.

Howie essentially did that, but with Reddick and got Barkley and CJGJ with that difference in year 1. They don't really need to create more cap space this season, its 2025 and beyond.

Here's the fun part, they are going to do this same thing again in 2 years with Huff if it doesn't work out.

Hell, going by Reddick, they might even if it does work out. He'll be 28 when his contract is up. He can average 15 sacks per season the next 3 years and people will defend the Eagles letting him go because "His new contract will take him over 30, and he's not good against the run."

I am not entirely sure he gets a contract extension from the Jets. I kind of look at it this way, the Jets may give him a contract extension. And maybe he gets the money he is looking for. However, from the Jets point of view if he goes out there and he has 10 sacks and he plays over 67% of the snaps and is really good, then you probably gonna win to extend him. So that’s a win at the value you got him for. However, if he gets 10+ sacks and under 65% if the snaps and you re-sign him even better. If he doesn’t reach the snaps criteria, you can’t get a contract done, and he leaves in free agency then you’re probably just gonna get a compensatory third round pick in 2026. It’s going to be lower than the 3rd they gave up but if you get a really good year out of him the 20-30 spots isn’t the end of the world. To me this was a good risk for the Jets. you’re either gonna get a player who is real good and sign him to an extension or if he plays well and leaves in free agency you’re likely gonna get that third round pick back but be slotted 20-30 picks later. The only way it doesn’t work out for the Jets is if he’s just bad or gets hurt (with that turf at MetLife it’s possible sadly) this upcoming year, which would be bad for the Eagles too because they want him to play over the snap count and get those sacks.

that said the third round pick doesn’t just depend on Hassan Reddick production in 2024 and his snap count, but what Aaron Rodgers is in 2025. That 3rd round pick (or second if it conveys to a 2nd) if he is done could be at the top of the third round or Aaron Rodgers is still real good it might be at the back end of the 3rd round.

Free agent from Pittsburgh, apparently.

I am concerned we still haven't replaced Derrick Barnett.

RIP Joe Flaherty.  He was Guy Caballero and many, many others.  Might not get away with this skit today:

Eagles are preventing a $60mm 2025 dead cap issue, and moving Reddick lets them make the biggest dent in it. If he played here in 2024, they get a $14mm dead cap in 2025. They will also have 2025 dead cap hits from the retirements of Kelce, Cox, and Graham most likely.

In case you want the numbers for 2025:

Kelce - 16,438,000
Cox - 10,100,000
Graham - 4,560,000*
Total - 31,098,000

*This is assuming the void year allows for a post june designation, if not it's $9,018,000

We should be rooting for Reddick to kill it this year. Go get those sacks!

Be so damn productive you can't take him off the field!

You would think they would give that to us now that they have Quez

Sammy Maudlin was my favorite character of his.

It’s only April

I posted about Jordan Whittington the other day being really slept as the 3rd guy in that Texas WR corps.

Apparently Texas players at the combine kept telling teams he is the teammate they would choose to bring along if they could.

He's a good player that seems to also be a great teammate.

Vilifying Reddick to justify the trade is weird

We only have 1 round to replace his bustability though.  If we don't go DE in round 1, he can not be replaced.

Always hated that guy.  He didn't send my family a Christmas card.

Howie didn't pay him enough to afford stamps

Well they can't vilify Howie because he's never wrong

WIP yesterday was full of callers saying he sucked and is super overrated. Some of whom ironically also called the station back in December complaining that Patricia did him dirty by not letting him loose and dropping him into coverage.

Extreme copium at play. I remember when the Sixers got rid of Jimmy Butler. it went from "This is the best teammate Embiid has ever played with, dude's a gamer!" to "What a loser, have fun in Miami, there's a reason the guy is on his 4th team in 4 years!"

We saw how that one turned out.

Are you saying to pay Reddick $25M or more per year for an extension? That's likely what he wants! I don't want a 31 year old starting a huge contract for the kind of money he wants. Maybe $18M? MAX!! We signed Huff for cheaper and he's younger. He's his replacement.  Bottom line is Eagles need to get younger and faster and build from there. I like their plan thus far and do hope they continue it going forward.

Even still the cap will increase 2025 and beyond. Especially if inflation keeps going the way it is. Howie is playing chess.

Maybe not 25, but I would have given him close. I really think his age is being overrated. He's not that old. He will likely be productive through age 32, then we'll see. I want the defense to get better. If they can get better and also younger and faster, that's a cherry on top. But I don't think the defensive personnel on paper is better. I think at best they broke even, and possibly are worse. Devin White is fast. He's also out of position often and gets eaten up by blockers. Speed isn't everything. I wanted to say that at this point in free agency the Eagles defense is sizeably better and right now I can't say that. And I consider that disappointing.

Once the games start, all this stuff goes out the window. If the Eagles and Cowboys are both 11-4 in December and they're tied 24-24 in the 4th quarter and Devin White bites on a play action fake or if Bryce Huff and Nolan Smith aren't producing, none of this stuff is going to matter. All you and every other Eagles fan are going to care about once the season starts is are the guys good enough or not. The talk about age is entirely an offseason creation.

Guarantee the posts on here in December if one of the young guys costs them a game will be "___ Fing blows. Thanks, Howie" and not "Guys, we're younger and have a healthier future, that's the important thing."

Didn't do anything at combine other than bench.  Same with pro day.  Guess has some kind of hammy issue going on.  Was a top 60 or so recruit coming out of high school

Where do you put Reddick in the top 11 here?
