Yes, I would say they are in trouble.

2019 I feel their pain

I’m thinking the Bills make a move for a WR close to or on draft day.

Texans have a logjam in their WR room now.

Diggs, Dell and Collins are probably untouchable.

Noah Brown probably isn't of interest to Howie because he was a FA last month but re-signed with Houston.

Robert Woods is washed and old. If we haven't already signed Parker he might have made some sense but not now.

John Metchie III is the wildcard. It seems like Texans gave up on him already. Next to no NFL production but how much is that due to sitting out his rookie year due to cancer? Still young and if he can be had for cheap and develop he could be plugged into the slot position and is still young.

They just took a 31m$ cap hit for this, I doubt they’re doing anything too dramatic. Quez Watkins and a 3rd rounder

I mean maybe the billionaire owner can afford it.

I mean, if they need to make money, all they need to do is set Gracie Hunt up on Only Fans. They'd have the funds in a week.

Diggs is still only 30. Probably has at least 3 big seasons left in him

Great Value for a 2nd round pick

He’s cooked if you actually watched him last season.

Why not wait until they cut someone?

Kelce is ~$16.4mm in 2025 dead cap, Cox is $10.1mm and Graham would be $9mm (but guessing they post June 1 his retirement so it will be pushed to 2026 in full). But with $26.5mm for Kelce and Cox to clear the books from their constant extensions, having big dead caps for Reddick and Sweat (another $30mm) would have been a problem. One of them had to go as the bills for extending the core 4 came due.

And what does Lane look like for dead cap?

feel like he reworked his deal a dozen times

It’s a GREAT receiver class. I’d rather draft a guy than give up a big contract and a second round pick for a 30 year old high volume but low yardage receiver.

This is why I wish OTC and Spotrac kept historical info.  I feel like there may have been one or two in there but nothing outside what everyone else does.  Like the original 1 year deal Alshon did I thought was straight up, but who knows, maybe he did have 4 void years.

You can try to use archive.org to jump back in time to a page, or use it to take snapshots of pages for it to store.

Here's Alshons pages:

If anyone is getting cut, it's going to be Woods, which doesn't have much of a purpose here. I'm not sure they are so far out on Metchie that they will cut him in what really is his 2nd year after using pick #44 on him in 2022. But he's clearly at best 4th on the depth chart, and probably really 5th at the moment I'd imagine.

I can't remember an offseason where every trade compensation sums up as "...that's it?"

It’s just that fans overrate the value of 30 year old big name players.

GM’s are looking at money, cap impact, and how the player projects going forward.

Lane is signed through 2026. In 2027 his dead cap charge will be $11.3mm to not be on the team. Just under $4mm of that can be pushed to 2028 if he is a post June 1 release/retirement. So long as he plays the next 2 years, his cap is manageable. If he retired after 2025 and we filed the paperwork after June 1, 2026, he'd be $8.7mm of 2026 dead cap (cap savings of $10.2mm) and 2027 dead cap of $11.3mm. But there's no room left to reduce his cap charges as his salary is already league minimum.

I don't think he was cooked.  He did seem to have lost a step.

Honestly, what Howie does deferring cap hits into the future makes complete sense as the cap rises every year, making the deferred money a lower percentage of the cap and less impactful. But Kelce and Cox sticking around another year longer than expected built up this 2025 issue -- there was no way they weren't bring them back (especially Kelce). I think we'd all agree they both exceeded expectations last year. While they will have to pass the kidney stone next year, they have a decent amount of 2024 to roll over, so they will likely have plenty of cap space in 2025 (I'd guess ~$40mm if they extend Devonta and keep him off the 5th year option, and potentially more if they extend AJ Brown).

With Reddick the options were to keep him at ~$21mm this year and his ~$15mm in dead cap for 2025, extend him, or move him. I would have liked to extend him, but guessing they were nowhere close on numbers. I'm interested to see if Reddick becomes another Clowney -- hopping around on one year contracts. Howie decided Huff is his new Reddick -- someone he signed where the contract will look cheap after a year. Hope he's right.

Snead just turned 27. Burns is 25. 5 QB's, all who are 25 or younger, while they stink, were still traded for cheaper than usual. There are other minor trades for guys like Mixon whose 27. It's not just old guys. It's really just the Bears who keep trading more than they should.

There are so may ways to massage the cap that I never worry about that with Howie and going back to Joe Banner. If Eagles want someone, they will find a way. Cap always going up, makes it a moot point. Everyone was scared a few years back with Wentz situation and look what Howie did. He plays that like a fiddle. End of the day, don't want to pay long term big money to guys like Ertz, Hargrave, Sweat and Reddick. All limited in their own ways and may fall off a cliff at any moment. The Bradberry and Quinn demises of recent note. Those kinds of signings should only be for 1-2 year deals or forget it. Last year was a good lesson that we can't overly rely on old vets. Need to get younger and faster. Especially with the defense. Chiefs won with a lot of rookies and 2nd year players on defense. Of course you need a couple good stabilzing vets as well. As long as the offense is up to par we have a shot with that formula.

You look at their current starters? If Josh Allen was my QB I’d be trying to get him some talent. Every year you have him, the goal should be to win it all
