The ring he got with SF before joining the Eagles is not legit?

That's what I'm wondering, Ricky actually played in his super bowl.

If they can get him and they think he can be a lockdown OT for 10 years, they aren't going to care if he rides the pine for 2 years.

well,  sure they will.  because he's not the only one,  get one next year,  the year after,  the year after that, or whenever.   The lockdown OT the Eagles have at LT was taken in the 7th round, and never played football before.    The Eagles should be good enough at scouting and training players to get a RT to play RT when they're needed in 2027 without having to draft them in 2024,  or draft them on day 3 or udfa now for 2024.

he had fewer than 10 starts in his entire college career.  why is this?  He was actually an OT in high school, goes to college, and then doesn't start his first year,  and doesn't start his 2nd year.  And then 6 starts last year.

How about a better than average CB this year,  when they're actually needed?

I’m not sure why most people are assuming we have ‘at least’ 2 years with Lane.  I think it’s much more accurate to say ‘at best’ 2 years.  Guy has had some surgeries.  He is not a spring chicken

At least 3 years,  he's got $18 Million due in 2026.

Jason Peters played last year at 41.  Lane Johnson is 33.

If Lane is starting here 3 seasons from now then it’s likely a case where they are keeping him for emotional reasons rather than his level of play.  Not everyone is Jason Peters.  I seem to recall a lot of people complaining about Peters play dropping off his last few years here.  Just because it’s possible Lane can still be playing at 37/38 years old, that doesn’t mean the Eagles couldn’t get better performance from another player during these later years.

Peters had 6 AP seasons and 8 straight Pro Bowl seasons.  His last AP season was at age 32, his last PB season was at the age of 34.  Yeah, he played for 7 more seasons.

I really hope Mims goes top 20 so we don't have to face drafting him. Either he's a top 5 OT or he's a bust in 3 years (Mekhi Becton) with no in-between. Guys that big/fast get hurt a TON.

If we end up drafting another OT in the first round, I hope it's one we've scouted, met with, and worked out this time.

First, I think that you severely underestimate the value of having legitimate depth at OT. If Lane or Mailata go down for the season with an injury, that could scuttle the entire campaign. Having a guy like Mims on the bench could quite literally be the difference between winning the Super Bowl or missing the playoffs.

Second, Mailata is an EXTREMELY rare opportunity. First of all, just physically, the guy is a one in a billion type of prospect. Then having him actually be want to transition to American football AND be able to learn the game, is exceptionally rare. You can’t bank on having that opportunity ever again.

If a great corner prospect is available, great, but an equivalent OT is going to have way more lifetime value when you project their career lengths and contract values.

Mailata has been pretty healthy…

Shady, are we talking about Shady? Somehow, I missed his time in San Francisco.

The Eagles understand positional value very well, and the most value they'll gain on a fixed rookie contract are at OT, pass rusher, WR and CB to a lesser degree

Very predictably, their free agency largely centered around spending at the lesser important positions, since the free agent market takes that into account and simultaneously lets you fill your needs in the draft now at the more premium positions, which also happen to be largely the strength of the draft

The first 3 picks are almost certainly going to be some combination of OL/DL and then 1 WR/CB in no particular order

As far as their first rounder, they're not taking a guard only prospect in the first round. The value isn't large enough.

I think they'll love Fautanu, considering he has the potential to develop into a Pro Bowl tackle but can also play immediately at guard. They'll trade up for that as opposed to sitting at 22 and drafting a more tackle only prospect if he gets in range for a small trade up

This data is from 2022, but it backs that up.

One day in the future we're going to get confirmation that Big Dom is an ex mob enforcer with a serious body count.  What a legend.

Going back a little to guards getting paid higher, it may have to do with the way interior defenders are attacking and playing. The NFL is seeing much more pass rushing from the interior than in the past. If you look at the quality of sacks players are getting, there's quite a lot of interior defenders high on that list.

While very raw at the beginning, Mailata has the physical attributes that set him apart from the rest.  He has a great OL coach and his is receptive to coaching.  All these make him a premier OT for the team.  Can this be repeated?  Possible, but it will be a rare event when an exceptional person come on the scene.

Lane should be near his end of his playing career.  At best 2 more seasons would be the right way to look at it.  The team always has anchoring OTs on both sides.  Some by drafting, some by trading.  Lane is still the starting RT for the upcoming season, drafting a promising one to develop would be the right approach.  If he does not work out, then they have the options of trading and drafting another one next off season.  To get a good prospective OT, they need to go early in the first 2 rounds.

Mims is shorter and thicker than Mailata. More weight concentrated on the joints.

But you're right in the sense that some guys are just physical freaks and it doesn't matter.

Howie would probably trade up for him if he really likes him.

The cornerback market should reset once Surtain agrees to a contract extension, but as it stands the top guards make just as much as the top cornerbacks thanks to Dickerson’s extension and Robert Hunt’s FA deal.

At this point, the only positions not making big money at the top is safety (Bates makes about $16M a year), centers and off-ball linebackers.

There are two Mailata type prospects in this draft:

1) Giavani Manu — 6’7” 350 pounds, 4.96 forty at his pro day with a 33(!) inch vertical jump at that size. He played Canadian college football, so he’s not entirely new to the sport, which makes you wonder how he didn’t get an American college offer. There were 16 teams ant his pro day, but the Eagles were not among them. Apparently we did scout him last fall, but I couldn’t find any other details on it.

2) Travis Clayton - 6’7” 300 pounds with 35 inch arms and a 4.8 forty. He’s a former British rugby player, boxer and played tennis in his youth, so presumably he is a good athlete with professional level work ethic. Only 22 years old which helps. He’s going through the NFL international player pathway like Jordan. I can’t seem to find any information on which teams have scouted him though.

I think both of these guys have a shot to get drafted, especially Manu. It seems like every team in the NFL has taken an in person look at him, and he’s played football so the learning curve shouldn’t be as steep. Clayton would be a multi-year project as he adds weight to a leaner frame and learns the game, but certainly the tools seem to be there.

The hit rate for safeties and linebackers in the first round, combined with their lack of open market value, should give teams pause when selecting them round 1 unless you see elite upside.

EAGLES OFFENSIVE TACKLES - RECENT HISTORY

Lane has $18 Million+ for the next 3 years.  24, 25, 26.  Is also signed for 2027.

Lane started week 1 of his rookie year.

Lane started every game of his rookie year.

No sitting and waiting.

Jason Peters was a udfa by the Bills,  became a pro bowler there,  and was signed by the Eagles as a full price starting Left Tackle.

No sitting and waiting.

Mailata was drafted in the 7th round,   with no football experience whatsoever,  a complete and total project.   Sat and waited,  became great.

Dillard was drafted in the 1st round.   Wasn't a week 1 starter,  despite being a 1st round pick.  Was mostly a failure with the Eagles.

Things the Eagles have done that worked.

1) Draft 1st round pick - starts immediately (Lane Johnson)
2) Expensive free agent - starts immediately (Jason Peters)
3) Day 3 pick on complete project - waits a while (Mailata)

Things the Eagles have done that didn't work .

1) Draft 1st round pick - does not start immediately (Dillard)

I think that the Eagles should do what worked,  instead of what didn't work.

Which o-lineman would you want that can start day 1, because Mims and Guyton aren't.
