There’s a weird butterfly effect that happens if they took one of those guys which could have impacted the Super Bowl year that season. They don’t sign Blount, they don’t trade for Ajayi, both of whom were significant contributors for them. Especially Blount in the playoffs. Maybe someone like Mixon or Kamara outperforms them. They’re clearly the better players. But I’m content with how things ended up for them and I think Blount was the perfect fit for them in 2017.

Corey Clement was a significant addition too.

And Barnett, who they took as their first rounder that year, recovered Graham’s fumble in the Super Bowl. Also had a strip sack in the NFCCG against Minnesota. Bust of a pick, but those two plays might have made it worth it for the Super Bowl year.

Traded up for Pumphrey, too.  I remember that Saturday because I (along with other managers) were sent on company-mandated Sensitivity Training — on a frickin Saturday, of all things.  I was watching the ticker on NFL.com and saw it as I scrolled through the round.

There was nearly a barrage of obscenity when I saw that pick.  At least two full rounds too early — and they traded up.  Unbelievable

Just be glad the Eagles didn't do it repeatedly? For that time span that they pushed em all in.

Definitely something that would make one fail a sensitivity training course.

The Eagles’ voluntary workout program opens today.

He is vastly underrated in the pantheon of perfect fits for the Super Bowl run.

In the Super Bowl alone, he had the big swing pass at the end of the 1st half that set them up for the Philly Special.
Then he was the RB for the Philly Special.  He took the snap, he started the motion to the left, and he's the one that made the perfect pitch to Burton.
And in the 2nd half, he had a huge TD as well.

And that's not to mention any of the big contributions during the season itself.   It's a shame how his career took a turn the following year... but he's got something very very very few people can claim.   Not just a ring, but he was a major contributor to that win.

This is why the draft is the most impactful weekend of the year for the nfl.  Only caveat is that we have no idea what that impact will be.

I have no idea how he didn’t score on that play.

Pumphrey was phenomenal in college (albeit in a weak conference), his numbers are incredible, but he was 5ft 8 and 176lbs, just what did we think he was going to do at pro level, other than return kicks and we already had at least two tailbacks we could use for that.  2017 was an awful draft, Sidney Jones in the second who suited up for one game that year, then Hollins, Pumphrey and Shelton Gibson in the 4th and 5th, Pumphrey never took a snap as a Pro, while the Packers picked up Williams bottom of the 4th and Jones on a compensatory 5th.

They unloaded dead weight and big cap numbers (Maxwell, Alonso and Murray).
And in addition to that, they traded a couple mid-round picks.

The real cost to move up was ONE 1st round pick and ONE 2nd round pick two years later.   That's a BARGAIN.    AND, they recouped the 1st round pick when they traded away Bradford.

They didn't push them all in at all.  That's a minor trade up.  It looks bigger than that, because of the Maxwell, Alonso and Murray trades.  But, if you recall, Maxwell and Murray were two of the most hated free agent acquisitions this team ever made... they were overpriced AND they were completely ineffective.  There were discussions about if the team would ever be able to get rid of them without massive hits to the cap.  And it was THOSE flips that started the Howie narrative.   He swindled both Miami and Tennessee to give up draft capital to take on those stiffs.  Maxwell stunk with Miami and was out of the league after two more seasons.  Murray was gone after two more years as well.  Alonso managed 3 more seasons in the league, but his final one was not worth talking about.

Were they included in the trades to acquire the #2 overall pick?   Yes.   Were they actually costing the Eagles anything to move on from them?   Absolutely not.  In fact, moving on from them freed up cap space for the future.  Trading them, in isolation, was a massive WIN for the Eagles.   It was not 'going all in', it was actually trying to FIX what Kelly had broken in his brief stint in charge of personnel.

He wasn't that fast... even before the hip injury.   He followed his blockers well, but once he was alone in the open field, he just didn't have the wiggle to make more guys miss, and didn't have the speed to out race them.

Sproles convinced the Eagles that "small" doesn't matter for a RB. The only problem was, that's only true regarding height, not weight. That's why I laugh every time they try to hype Deuce Vaughn.

Have to wonder what AJ Brown could net in a trade now after having two straight monster seasons.

Would obviously love to keep both he and Smith long term, but it's not going to happen.

AJ Brown is only really tradable after 2024. From there, it's cap relief + at least a 2nd.

Reminded me of the LJ Smith play in 2006 against the Cowboys.  1 defender w/ 1 blocker.  How?

We've put so many assets -FINALLY!- into the WR position.  To think of trading Brown while he is still in his 20's makes me ill.  Keep him.  Keep DeVonta.

I wouldn't change a thing before February 4, 2018.

I truly believe that as great as Wentz was that season, he wouldn't have been able to deliver the performances Nick did in the playoffs.

In an ideal world, absolutely. I don't know that the Eagles are going to lock into 40-50 million between Brown and Smith.

If we have to choose between Brown and Smith, I’m keeping Brown.

Both are great to have, but Brown is legitimate world beater and isn’t much older than Smith. I also think there is an opportunity to at least improve some aspects of the team by replacing Smith (though obviously it would be difficult to upgrade on him overall).

Seeing the contracts DTs are pulling in, you have to imagine Howie is preparing for in 2 and 3 years when he has to give mammoth deals out to Davis and Carter. Hopefully they are deserving of those deals.

Jets go full throwback for new uniforms.
