They unloaded dead weight and big cap numbers (Maxwell, Alonso and Murray).
And in addition to that, they traded a couple mid-round picks.

The real cost to move up was ONE 1st round pick and ONE 2nd round pick two years later.   That's a BARGAIN.    AND, they recouped the 1st round pick when they traded away Bradford.

They didn't push them all in at all.  That's a minor trade up.  It looks bigger than that, because of the Maxwell, Alonso and Murray trades.  But, if you recall, Maxwell and Murray were two of the most hated free agent acquisitions this team ever made... they were overpriced AND they were completely ineffective.  There were discussions about if the team would ever be able to get rid of them without massive hits to the cap.  And it was THOSE flips that started the Howie narrative.   He swindled both Miami and Tennessee to give up draft capital to take on those stiffs.  Maxwell stunk with Miami and was out of the league after two more seasons.  Murray was gone after two more years as well.  Alonso managed 3 more seasons in the league, but his final one was not worth talking about.

Were they included in the trades to acquire the #2 overall pick?   Yes.   Were they actually costing the Eagles anything to move on from them?   Absolutely not.  In fact, moving on from them freed up cap space for the future.  Trading them, in isolation, was a massive WIN for the Eagles.   It was not 'going all in', it was actually trying to FIX what Kelly had broken in his brief stint in charge of personnel.

Ok... let's agree that we have a different definition of pushing them all in. They gave up a boat load to make that Wentz trade I don't care how you try to justify it. Thankfully Howard was able to work his magic with Bradford. To me it was a calculated all in move for a prospect knowing that it would take a while to recoup those assets. You feel differently and that's fine.

If we have to choose between Brown and Smith, I’m keeping Brown.

Both are great to have, but Brown is legitimate world beater and isn’t much older than Smith. I also think there is an opportunity to at least improve some aspects of the team by replacing Smith (though obviously it would be difficult to upgrade on him overall).

Brown brought a fair amount of unneeded drama last season; he needs to clean that up.  If he's not going to give up social media, he needs to be much smarter about it.  My guess right now is that he's playing somewhere else in 2025.

If the Eagles take a WR at #53 or before, I think you can start the clock on Brown.

Did Brown bring drama or did the Philly media create it? I really don't think Brown did anything that we can consider drama. Maybe I glazed over it?

I'd say he brought it:

Hes admitted multiple times in the past that he likes to troll people. He loves the drama

I guess I'm looking at that differently than true drama. Drama is TO, AB, Keyshawn Johnson behavior.

Devonta 3 year extension for 75m.

Surprised that it's only a 3 year extension, but hell yeah!

Yet another black-on-black crime

He’s under contract for the next five years.

Nope, the media took and ran with anything they could with AJ. It's simply disgusting. I don't think fans remember where this team was with wide receivers in the past either. AJ completely made our offense a juggernaut yet people still talk about trading him.

Is it 3 after his 4th or 5th year?

Great to have it done.  Wish it was longer.

After his 5th. Signed through 2028, so 5 more seasons. Added 3 to his rookie deal (4 + 5th year option).

5th year option is included in the 3 year extension.

5th year option was picked up.

Edit

$75m, £51m. guaranteed

They’re going to be able to afford paying him by paying two CBs on rookie contracts starting in a couple years and possible only one edge rusher making big money if Sweat is gone next year.

Basically 4 years, $91mm when you factor in picking up the 5th year. Good deal.

Great deal

I still think they work out an extension with AJ next offseason

Logical move and one that was always very likely.

Plus he is on the books for $3.4mm in 2024 ($6.4mm cap hit due to signing bonus from rookie deal). So call it 5 years, $94mm from here.

Both racebaiting.  It's honestly getting old at this point @HazletonEagle - I agree he could have been a decent #2.

Very happy for Smitty.

Extend AJ next.

After fifth, it is a contract that starts in 2026 when the top receivers will be making 35-40m$ a year
