Plus he is on the books for $3.4mm in 2024 ($6.4mm cap hit due to signing bonus from rookie deal). So call it 5 years, $94mm from here.

Not bad at all

Extend AJ next.

AJ's got a reasonable cap number of ~$12.2mm this year. It jumps to $26.5mm next year and over $40mm in 2026. The logical time to extend him would be after this year or after 2025. They're not extending him after only one year of his 4 year contract (remember, he played 2022 on the last year of his rookie deal). His 2025 salary jumps to $15.25mm and isn't guaranteed (he has no guarantees after this year), so his agent will come knocking after the year.

I don’t think AJ gets another contract here. Just a gut feeling.

Awesome news. Now on to the draft.

I don’t think his game will age gracefully.

The more I think about it, this was a great move by the Eagles. The extension will kick in at an AAV of $25mm/year in 2026 and run 3 seasons. By that time guys like Jefferson, Lamb, etc. will likely have pushed the WR market well north of $30mm. This deal is going to look like a steal when it kicks in. Meanwhile, DeVonta gets $51mm guaranteed now ($66mm with the 5th year option per report above) and mitigates his injury risk.

Win/win deal for both sides. Added benefit, we know now Lamb will be demanding more than $25mm per year from Dallas and that will kick in a year earlier.

Micah Parsons also said he wants to be the Turds kickoff returner ....

Something to keep in mind: Devonta Smith came in a little older as a prospect so for those who hoped for an extra year on the extension, he will be 31 at the end of his new contract.

$75m, £51m. guaranteed

I wonder why his guaranteed money is in English pounds.

Basically 4 years, $91mm when you factor in picking up the 5th year. Good deal.

Great deal for my favorite current Eagle. Psyched to keep him here through 2028.

Agree.

I tend to agree that trade up seems more likely than trade down at this point.  The names listed all make sense, with the exception of Cooper DeJean.  I wouldn't even want DeJean at #22; trading up for him would be vomit-inducing.  A 2nd round pick for a guy who's a utility safety/nickel makes way more sense.

If Kempski honestly believes this draft is top-heavy and weak, he should also have listed pooling picks #50 and 53 together to move back up into the first round to get two prospects.

What? Why? A little faster and a little stronger than Anquan Boldin. And even IF you're right which, obviously, I do not think is the case, he's only 26. That theoretical precipice is still years off.

Agreed. If he plays well in 2024 and doesn't get hurt, the time to sell-high is next off-season.

Need to draft a WR in the first 2 rounds of this draft.

By next year WR salary will jump north of $30m easy. We will likely have to extend him at $32-35m range.

Do it for $25-27m now.

I understand the desire to move up in the first.

But, as I run the draft simulator for 2 rounds, I sometimes am finding appealing players at 50 and 53.

In the first round, depending on who drops to us, I am usually picking OT, CB, DT, Edge

Second round, LB, DT, CB, OG

Would like to keep AJ here till end of Devanta contract in 2028. That's our window here with this core group all in their prime. He will probably want guaranteed money after end of this year. But the year after would probably be better. Don't know  if he will be that good soldier in doing anything favorable for the organization in any restructure though. AJ is a tough nut and actually needs to be on better behavior this year and not become Odell's twin. 🤞

For the record, I would do this without hesitation.

I don't know where things level off in the NFL but even if the cap keeps going up teams can't keep paying star players $25+ million and QBs 50+ on a 52 man roster.

New England isn't in need of an additional first round pick this season; they'll take their QB at #3 (unless they're idiots) and already know they'll be picking high again in 2025.

The logic makes sense for the Raiders and Broncos, to a degree -- they both should be trying to trade up -- but I don't see any reason the top 3 teams would trade out, which means you're trading next year's first round pick just to get into position to draft JJ McCarthy??

Generally the bigger bodied guys break down and it’s the lighter guys who have the longevity.

Julio’s last 1000 yard season was at age 30. Moss at 32, Megatron 30, Evans is playing great but still hasn’t gotten over 30 yet. TO was the mother of all exceptions, Deebo is already breaking down. Hopkins barely edged 1000 yards at 31 in a 17 game season, and the last time he did that was 28. He’s probably not going to do it again. Demaryius Thomas was 29, AJ Green was 29… Dez was out of the league by 29.

Conversely, 200lb Reggie Wayne had 1300 yards at 34. 195lb Steve Smith had 1000 yards at 35. 200lb Cris Carter had 1200 yards at 35. 195lb Julian Edelman had 1100 yards at 33. 190 lb Tyreek Hill just had his best season and one of the greatest seasons ever at 29. 188lb Isaac Bruce was still a 1000 yard receiver at 34.

At the draft, people were saying Devonta’s weight was a problem, but it’s gonna end up being the best thing for his longevity. I predict Devonta is playing his best football at the end of this contract and we extend him again, expecting big things at 31, 32, 33. AJ will either stay to be the #2 or ask for too much and we’ll Reddick him

Yep. I made this argument a couple days ago. He has no guarantees left on his contract. So you better believe he and his agent are gonna come to the Eagles wanting an extension next off-season and more guaranteed money. I don’t see him being thrilled to play in 2025 with no guarantees left on his contract with 2 years left. Gonna have to make a decision at that point. In 2026 his cap number is $41 mil. They aren’t playing him at that number. He’s either gone, restructured or he got an extension. It’s why i said if the eagles take a 1st round wr i think it’s telling that he is likely not here long term (before smith extension so now it’s obvious if they move on from one it would be brown). You aren’t taking a WR at 22 and he’s just your 3rd wr for 4 years. They aren’t going to do that. Eventually that kid is going to be given a bigger role. If they do it it’s likely by 2026 Aj brown is gone. Probably trade him for draft capital and go with smith and the pick at 22. That said i dont think they take a WR at 22.
