I don’t think Smith can reasonably expect to use any Chase/Jefferson/Lamb/ARSB contracts to boost his contract. They all should command a significantly bigger deal than Smith, maybe even Aiyuk. Huggins probably isn’t getting a new deal soon, so that leaves Waddle.

Smith has 2 less TD's than St Brown and one less than CD Lamb over the first 3 years of his career despite competing with AJ Brown. He could absolutely argue he could put up their numbers in a team as the unquestioned WR1.

Spoiler alert... LBs 40th (included some UFL teams)

I'd give Brown another contract. I feel like he'll still be very productive at 31 given his skill set if he's relatively healthy.

In an ideal world we all would, but tying up 55million a year at WR is a lot of cheddar.

If they do end up with a Reddick decision with AJ, at least they have a proven replacement in Smitty and they can find another WR2. With Reddick we have nothing proven, it's all hopes and dreams that Huff can replicate his success with a full workload and Nolan can play at all

This is true... Dreams and Nightmares (no diddy)

Investment in the offense.

The $25M AAV doesn't count yet for Smith... so that can be removed from the equation...

But, that's the way the NFL is going more and more.   All the rules are tilted towards offense.  Defensive dominance just isn't what it once was.   I'm sure we'll never see another situation where a team wins a Super Bowl on the shoulders of a stud defense and an impotent offense (like the '85 Bears, '00 Ravens, etc.).  You need an offense that can put up close to 30 ppg consistently... and a defense that can create turnovers... not dominate an opponent and hold them to 10 ppg.

Either the offense performs at it's expected to on paper and it's worth every penny.

Or...

It doesn't, which given the talent, likely means the QB is to blame and has another meh season, and then the talk about moving on from him will start to simmer.

Eh. Depending on the tape I'd blame them keeping Nick if the offense fails again. We've already been told that it's not completely Moore's offense. I'd sooner fire Nick and promote Moore than give up on Hurts already

I'd sign up for that right now.

If we don’t plan to extend AJ, we should honestly trade him ASAP and get a first and more back for him while he’s still young and at his peak value.

I’d prefer to keep him, but it’s a decision we need to make and be decisive in our action.

meh... making up for the years of bad WR past. I'm all for it in a league that's now dominated by the air game

He can argue it all he wants. He’d lose it though.

The logic of getting rid of AJ Brown stupifies me.

The Trump re-posting of this should be coming soon from the NYC courtroom.

Eagles should do the complete opposite and go with either endangered species or government protected animals.

IF that were to ever happen, there's approximately a zero percent chance the first place to do it would be the Midwest. Meat and cheese is basically a religion out there.

I don't know how people suddenly forgot the long drought we had at WR

I would prefer to keep AJ Brown for the next 3 to 4 years. if you get number one type wide receiver play out of him and what he’s been since arriving it is worth every penny. I think it’s the safer choice to keep him and smith  your offense would have the weapons to be elite for the next 3-4 years.

but then again, I can also understand if the Eagles view it this way, do we want to pay AJ Brown and Smith big money or we believe somebody in the draft is capable of being a really good wide receiver. hypothetically take him at 22. When AJ Brown comes up for an extension at the end of this year cause he has no guaranteed money left, eagles tell him to explore the trade market. Trade him and get a bunch of draft capital and save money that can be spent elsewhere to build up the rest of the roster while having a guy they believe can replace him at a fraction of the price. Really risky cause you better be right on the guy replacing him otherwise we are in a world of trouble

all I know is this, I do not see AJ Brown being happy nor playing in 2025 with no guaranteed money going forward. so a decision is looming for the eagles at the end of the 2024

Ill keep AJ as long as we can get away with not extending him and him being happy enough to preform.

Once its time for a new deal or he requests a trade, I wouldnt hesitate to grant it. Not gonna want to be paying a slow WR big money when he is getting even slower.

I’m guessing he’s likely not going to be thrilled with the idea heading into 2025 with no guaranteed money left in his deal. I think that day where he asks for an extension is coming after this upcoming season.

isnt there a way to convert a bunch of that salary in to bonuses? I thought thats how teams always free up cap space with re-structures.

He looks like a restructure candidate.

Generally the bigger bodied guys break down and it’s the lighter guys who have the longevity.

Julio’s last 1000 yard season was at age 30. Moss at 32, Megatron 30, Evans is playing great but still hasn’t gotten over 30 yet. TO was the mother of all exceptions, Deebo is already breaking down. Hopkins barely edged 1000 yards at 31 in a 17 game season, and the last time he did that was 28. He’s probably not going to do it again. Demaryius Thomas was 29, AJ Green was 29… Dez was out of the league by 29.

Conversely, 200lb Reggie Wayne had 1300 yards at 34. 195lb Steve Smith had 1000 yards at 35. 200lb Cris Carter had 1200 yards at 35. 195lb Julian Edelman had 1100 yards at 33. 190 lb Tyreek Hill just had his best season and one of the greatest seasons ever at 29. 188lb Isaac Bruce was still a 1000 yard receiver at 34.

At the draft, people were saying Devonta’s weight was a problem, but it’s gonna end up being the best thing for his longevity. I predict Devonta is playing his best football at the end of this contract and we extend him again, expecting big things at 31, 32, 33. AJ will either stay to be the #2 or ask for too much and we’ll Reddick him

I would be surprised if Smith has more than 1% body fat.  He looks like nothing but muscle.  He can get rag dolled but he seems to bounce right back up.

Agreed.

But if the Eagles determine that keeping him isn’t financially possible or pragmatic, then they need to move on ASAP while we can extract maximum value and replace him in an extremely deep WR class.
