At the age of 34, Jason Peters played 16 games and went to a probowl.  He was already getting sub’d out for bumps, bruises, and fatigue often later in games, but he was good.  At 35 (SB year), he played 7 games.  At 36, he really wasn’t good, especially in pass pro, managed to play 16 games, but was constantly diverting to the sidelines.  It was downhill from there.

Lane Johnson will be 34 week 1.

The cliff is coming.  Waste most of a first round pick’s rookie deal if you pull the trigger on a RT too soon.  Lose an entire season (this offense isn’t going anywhere with Steen at RT) if you pull the trigger too late.

Better than Cooper.

Highlights look good. Really nice frame (especially 34 inch arms). Then I read his scouting report that he can’t cover and misses too many tackles.

What makes you say that regarding Steen at RT?

I'm of the opinion that if they don't take an OT in round 1, I rather they not take one in day 2 unless Stoutland is super sure Guyton is going to be the next Lane Johnson or something. If they're going OT I want one of the best guys. If not, I'd rather just draft all guys who can play right now and figure out OT later. Spending a 2nd or 3rd rounder on an OT who won't play right away, but also isn't an elite prospect seems like an awful usage of resources.

I think they going up for Latham or Fauntanu,  Fashanu (who can play G and be an elite OT), Latu, or Verse. Staying put, if Mims falls and Stoutland thinks he can be next LJ, you pull the trigger.  Could he love Barton or Powers-Johnson?  Seem like trade down targeta

If he were good enough to be the starting RT while this offense competes for a SB I’d say it’s a near certainty he’d be penciled in as the starting RG…yet it seems the chatter suggests he’s already an afterthought there.  Combine that with how well the offense historically adjusts with Lane out at RT and I’d say the safer money is on the offense sinking rather than soaring with a mid-season Lane season ending injury.

I don’t think his play at RG means much regarding his RT play. He has short arms so he very likely won’t be a good enough starter at tackle, but I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t develop into a Vaitai level backup at tackle. The Eagles gave him a ton of help.

Hats off to the Flyers for their reenactment of the 2023 Eagles.

Very unlikely they were getting in with their April swoon but, man, they got screwed over the past 24 hours.  MTL blows leads over DET in the last minute in BOTH games because, of course, and DET walks away with 4 points when they should have had zero.  Every game last night went against the Flyers for positioning, and they got screwed over by the refs tonight on what should have been an early goal.

If they weren’t getting in (and they weren’t) I wanted DET and PIT to miss the playoffs as well.  Props to Tortorella for pulling the goalie with 3 minutes left in a tie game for WASH to win.  It had to be done strategically — but it also had the fringe benefit of eliminating both DET and PIT, which was great because, F U Crosby.

Even after leaving the Eagles,  Peters had a PFF of 77.5 his first year.   He was 39.

The secondary - overall - is not good right now.  Not in the uncertain future but in the current here and now.

There should be a raw hi ras swing OT project,  who I think should be Tyler Guyton as a day 3 pick, or Giovanni Manu as a udfa.

There should be a right guard drafted.  Someone who could start at right guard,  someone who played right guard in college and did well.  Didn't the Ravens meet with Zak Zinter?   The UConn RG seems like a reasonable choice.

But these should be day 3 picks I would think,  not one of the top 3 picks.   CB, WR would be the top 2,  and DL probably.

Pretty much any time you have a very good to great starter,  if that starter was injured,  the replacement player won't be as good.  And the offense typically sinks rather than soars when good starters are out.

Last year,  Goedert, Hurts, Brown and Smith were all hurt, some were out. Those injuries generally coincided with a bunch of Eagles losses.

What did the Eagles have behind Goedert, Brown and Smith.  If Brown was out,  do we think that Parker will be as good as Brown?  Or will there be sinking involved?

The Eagles had a thin, top heavy offense last year.  They lost players,  they lost games.  Some called it "the collapse".

The Eagles have 2 running backs.   Added great RB Barkley.  But 2 is not enough.   what if?  If Lane were out,  right now, Steen would move to RT, and Hennessy to RG.  And there would be a drop off.

What if these people were out?

Hurts   (Pickett)
Barkley (100% Gainwell)
Brown (100% Parker)
Smith (not sure who?)

The Eagles had Quez and Oz last year and replaced with Parris,  but there's an extra spot for backups.  If a WR is hurt,  new top WR can step in.  If there are no injuries,  can't hurt to have a top pick out there adding quality.   Brown and Smith played too much last year.  They all eventually got hurt.   Try to avoid that by putting another good WR out there.

I think DeJean, WR (Pearsall, McConkey, Worthy, Franklin), Peyton Wilson is about as impactful as the first 3 picks can possibly be.

2 three level playmakers on the defense who can be all over the field on any given play, and a dynamic WR for the slot to put the offense ridiculously over the top.

Focus most of the rest on the lines.

I largely agree.  DeJean.  A WR - I'd add Legette, who could be weapon now,  AJ Brown in the future.  I also like Luke McCaffrey,  who has possible "star" upside like Kelce.  Generally, the brother of top stars are also good.  He is supposed to be a 5th rounder or something.   I can say that I'd want to have him on the Eagles the most, but not that he's worth a top pick.  Would taking McCaffrey at 53 be seen as an overdraft, and would the pick get low grades by the media?  I don't know.

Payton Wilson is the only one of the LBs that I like around 50-53.   I also like T'V Sweat around there.   There is a place on the the DL for him.  He'd get snaps.

He needs to wrap up better.  You can see that even in highlights.  He throws his down but they almost look like they were going to escape a few times in that video.

Something that is easy to fix.  It's not as if it's an unwillingness.  Or that he's not aggressive enough and gets juked out. It's a minor technique thing.

As for coverage,  there aren't many LBs in this draft who can cover,  and also play LB well outside of Peyton Wilson. Just like Cooper, this guy has all the tools to develop in that aspect.

The Eagles had the worst back 7 I’ve ever seen. They need help there. I’m not interested in a backup olineman in the first round because Lane might get hurt or may retire. That’s worse than taking a d-lineman to play 45% of the snaps…

Naming 1 guy and using it as the basis of making decision on a completely different player is the mother of all confirmation biases.

But I will play your game: I counter you with Andrew Whitworth, whose body type is much closer to Lane’s than Peters. He started 103 out of a possible 113 games, and made 3 pro bowls as well as 2 first team all-pros after his 34th birthday. He won a SB ring as his team’s best lineman at 40.

I named Peters because he was here and has been celebrated for his longevity.

The list of all pro linemen who are ineffective at 35 is a lot longer than the list of those who are playing at a high level.

Which is why you take the right guy when you can get him.  If that is this year then so be it.  If not, then it needs to be next year.  What you don't want to do is pass up on "the guy" this year and then not be in position to get one next year and then be in trouble at RT.  The position is too important to pass one up this year if the right situation develops on day 1.

It's, "The sky is falling!" Get it right.

Lucked out this year. Last year I spent the draft night in a dry county in Arkansas. Got sent there again this week thankfully instead of next week.

Steen was a very good LT at the highest college level. He should be a solid backup OT at the pro level who can fill in for a year with help.

This is an objectively hilarious RB room for April 17.
