Let's be honest -- the Falcons are not a serious franchise. They have had 4 straight top 10 picks and have taken a TE, a possession WR, a RB and a backup QB. This is how you keep picking in the top 10 forever.

I'm trying to figure out why, but I keep drawing a Blank.

My two thoughts: 1. Penix's injury history is frightening. 2. Taking Penix at 8 over McCarthy was a mistake.

Except for the fact they admitted they'd spent about 45 minutes in total on him.

I didn’t know the second part.

Penix just had two seasons of lights out play. I wouldn’t be worried about his injury history.

Mims and Fuaga were very gettable. Mims didnt make a ton of sense, but Fuaga was absolutely perfect for us.

I'm not sure the Broncos or Raiders were looking to move down. They both SHOULD have moved down and made bad picks (the Broncos made the worst pick in recent memory), but they are bad franchises for a reason.

That’s almost like drafting Aaron Rogers when you’ve got Brett Favre.

Wasnt that pick 24 and they were a contender?

Completely disagree.  Rodgers was the best/2nd best QB in the draft and was a value pick at #24.  Penix is junk bonds, the 5th best QB in the draft and likely a 2nd round talent who the Falcons overdrafted at #8 overall with every defensive player in the draft still on the board.

In the end it helped the Eagles get their pick, so it'll be quite amusing to see the dysfunction in ATL well after their GM is fired.

Yeah, it was a rush to judgment on many fronts, and if you believe the video of their GM and Arthur Blank in the draft room he didn't seem 100% on board either. Same ACL already twice, plus shoulder injuries...behind an offensive line that isn't phenomenal. I could be wrong of course, but I'd say he's more likely to be a colossal blunder than a genius-looking move 5 years from now.

Any chance Howie goes LB'er with one of these 2nd round picks or will it be OL and DL? Thoughts?

Maybe if he is small, ran a 4.4 and started playing football a month ago…

Nah... it's a crap shoot. Odds are pretty damn bad for everyone. The GMs that you think are good from a far struggle with the same probabilities.

funny enough, if you hedge your bets on the percentages, craps is the most statistically even game. You just don't bet heavy on the main throw, it's the side bets that make it even. Make your own draft equivalence.

Looking at the current board, there is no big difference between a 3rd round comp pick and a mid 4th.

This is just not a deep class. Only bad move in RD2 is trading down for more 2024 capital. Stick and pick or get 2025 picks.

Play the board.  But the entire board.  If say pick 50 arrives and the board has several players ranked similarly, kind of like we suspect last night evolved there may be options to consider a trade that improves the team.  I will leave it to Howie on whether that includes 2024 draft capital, 2025 picks, or even players, coming or going.  Eagles have 13 CBs on the roster, for example, so moving a player might be part of a deal.  Did Dallas want Barton or Guyton.  Or did they have them ranked the same.   My suspicion is the ranking was similar.  If they valued Barton more, they made a bad move.  Howie looks like he played it right last night.  Needs to hit twice tonight.

Russel Wilson's ex-wife needs to send her a thank you card. There's a new draft reaction queen. I love the Debbie Downer comparisons.

I just hope he get 20-25 hr’s by the end of the year. He is bad on offense but I will say his defense has gotten better.

Better, yes.  But he's still not a great defender.  He's average, at best, in the field... and is brutal at the plate.  He can get ridiculously hot for brief stretches, but he's a net negative on the team.   If they have a guy that they could elevate over him, the team would improve.   I'd love to see Pache take the job from him.  But, he's not there yet.   I'd love to see Crawford come up and take the job (even though he's being worked primarily at CF... he could be a RF too).

"just don't bet heavy on the main throw"  -  Trade back and lower the amount of draft capital invested in the early rounds

"it's the side bets that make it even" - Use the profit from the trade back and make several picks in the later rounds.

Because of Siriani’s connections at Toledo, there is a chance the Eagles know Mitchell better than any other NFL team.

I was trying to be glass half full lol. Yeah, he isn’t good, no question. Hopefully Stott, Marsh and Bohm all have good years so it doesn’t matter.

I haven't been on much since last night, so I'm sure this has been said already, but Nick Saban's analysis of the pick included him saying Mitchell was #1 on Alabama's list for transfer portal acquisitions -- but he never entered the portal.

It isn't about the success rate in a vacuum.  It's about the success rate versus your opponent's success rate.   Some are much more successful than others (Steelers, Ravens, etc. ), and some are just brutally bad (the Falcons currently, the Lions of the 2000s, and the Browns pretty much from their re-entrance into the league until very recently).  It is an inexact science, but it is far from luck.

So that video showed two completions to basically uncoverable catches and then him dropping into zone coverage. WRs are allowed to make plays too. Groundbreaking stuff here.

Probably the worst football video I’ve ever watched tbh.

I believe so. I was only drawing a parallel of a sort. The Penix pick seems utterly bone-headed but I have one notion that might make some sense: the contract for Cousins was a mistake and they realize it now. Cousins is damaged goods and sunk cost. Draft his replacement now. Penix can hold a clipboard for a while. They have to eat Cousins’ contract but they’re moving on.

Nah. It was a bone-headed move.
