When you factor in everything when it comes to health, transitioning to pro ball and the lifestyle, etc, it's very inexact. Injuries, stupidity off the field, etc could easily derail an early career and impact success rates. Not a lot of control over these types of things.

And yet... some teams do dramatically better than others.   The proof exists that while it is an inexact process there are absolutely ways to improve your returns.   That's why the Ravens can basically sit out every free agency period... lose a bunch of players every year and still manage to put a good product on the field.    Same for the Steelers, historically.   And its why teams like the Falcons, Cardinals, Lions (until very recently), Browns (until very recently) were always terrible.   They couldn't draft to save their jobs, despite being at the top of the draft order year in and year out.

Can he play guard?

Hope so...  Was a top 30 recruit out of high school and just barely turned 21.  Here is his RAS as a guard

Of the 10 QBs drafted in round 1 of the 2018 and 2021 drafts, only 2 have been hits (Allen and Lamar) and 1 has underachieved thus far. The other 7 have been busts and aren’t on their original team anymore.

Yet there’s some shmuck in here saying the Falcons should have just waited until 2026 to draft their QB…

We need a backup OT more than we need a backup OG. They can find a backup OG in RD4.

I got that same vibe from the press conference last night.

It seems the smokescreen regarding moving up for him in the teens was to throw teams off the scent on their real target to move up.   And they weren't able to land that guy, and so Mitchell becomes the consolation prize.   Frankly, that's a pretty good consolation prize.

Don't think they'd be drafting a backup OG. We don't have a starting RG as it currently stands. Low key big need for them since all signs point to them not valuing Steen very highly at all. If they take a G today he probably starts week 1.

I think so but I think they want him as the swing tackle to start. I really like this guy and think he’ll be a star but he needs a year - year and a half with Stoutland. He can move and he’s only 6’5” 325 so he’s got the dimensions to play guard.

Steen is the RG. He was an Alabama player and a 3rd round pick. He needs to play.

This logic is so bad.

- You have no freaking clue how the draft is going to look two years from now.

- You have no idea where you’ll be drafting

- You have no idea how many other teams want a QB

- You (as a GM or coach) know there’s at least a 1/3 chance that you won’t be with the team anymore.

People use this logic all the time and it’s so dumb.

2018 and 2021 were "great” QB classes too.

All for a guy who was called a "discount Carson Palmer" in his scouting report  https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10117323-michael-penix-jr-nfl-draft-2024-scouting-report-for-atlanta-falcons-qb

Oh, and he's 24 years old already with four season-ending injuries and questions about his accuracy and ability to handle pressure.

Yeah, the Penix pick sucks for a team at #8 overall.  Second round?  Maybe you could justify it.  Third round?  Sure.  #8 overall?

Hilarious people are using Penix’s age against him. He’s 24, not 34.

Brady was winning Super Bowls in his 40s. Rodgers and Manning were winning league MVPs well into their 30s.

It would be silly to pass on a better player in hopes that he can step up. Steen shouldn't prevent you from doing anything.  Not yet.  He's completely unproven.

He ate Mitchell for lunch.

Nope - the one TD catch would not be one in the NFL.  He was open on an over route inside vs. what was probably cover-3.  He couldn't get away from Mitchell on a scramble drill.  He caught a comeback route where Mitchell had very good coverage.

Yeah 24 is so old for a QB. You watch his last two seasons at Washington or nah?

Penix was a terrible pick at 8.  It's ok.

The point would be that a 24 year old with 6 seasons of starting experience in college should not need time to develop on the bench.

Not sure, but I haven't seen most list him as one of the guys who's suited to play both.

You may want him to be ideally, but I don't think he's in their plans. Guys who cover the team have been saying for weeks they're down on him and when Sirianni was discussing who could fill in at RG last month he didn't even mention Steen's name. People said the Eagles #1 want in the first round was an OT ideally who could play RG now for a reason. I think they view it as a huge need.

I'm excited to see if Caleb Williams can have some success in the NFL.  Forgot they picked up DeAndre Swift, they also have Kennan Allen and Rome Oduze up there.  They could be entertaining to watch.

I saw a bit on ESPN where they were asking about playoffs for the Bears, it's not such a crazy suggestion.  If they can gel, they might give the Packers a run for the NFC North.

Steen just feels like he’s going to be that utility O-lineman that is back up for 2-3 positions. He could see extended time due to an injury and ultimately get a big contract to play guard with another team in 2-3 seasons.

Young players have to play to get better. If you want to hedge, draft some iOL on day 3.

He’s still going from college to pro ball. I’ll be shocked if he’s not the starter in 2025, maybe even by midway through this season.

I am a massive seller on Williams. I think he is an epic bust.

Detroit is still in the mix to win that division also

ok, last one for today

I get the logic, but we all know how obsessed they are with OL, and if they don't think he's a good RG they aren't just going to play him there in a championship window season and hand him the job. They value it way too much. I'm not sure they'll take a RG today, they may not, although I think it's really possible. But at an absolute minimum I think they will draft someone this weekend they think has a high probability to beat out Steen in camp.
