Ok I love the Barkley deal

So just to play devil’s advocate…

Penix had loads of injury issues for 4 years then followed that up with two lights out seasons of throwing for 4,500+ yards and 30+ TDs.

A lot of guys would have quit…

The bombastic narrative of the 2024 NFL Draft is that this is a "legendary,” "once-in-a-decade” quarterback class. While part of this is true, it really is a deep class, the subtext behind the feeding frenzy for this year’s quarterbacks has been discussed far less: The 2025 class is poised to be one of the worst of all time.

Three of the draft’s top quarterbacks this year all decided to come out early. Caleb Williams and J.J. McCarthy were juniors, while Drake Maye was a redshirt sophomore. All three are locks to be top-10 picks, and given high grades by draft advisors — so it was only natural that they decided to leave school and make the jump.

That helped create a major vacuum when it comes to the potential of the 2025 class. Naturally a lot can shift over the next 12 months, but there’s absolutely nothing on the horizon which indicates that the 2025 NFL Draft will have a single franchise quarterback available. As it stands here are the seven best quarterbacks set to turn pro next year:

  • Shedeur Sanders, Colorado
  • Quinn Ewers, Texas
  • Carson Beck, Georgia
  • Riley Leonard, Notre Dame
  • Cam Ward, Miami
  • Jalen Milroe, Alabama
  • Jalon Daniels, Kansas

If you leave the 2024 NFL Draft without a quarterback, or a plan for the future at the position — good luck. This is one of the worst groups we have ever seen, and potentially even rivals the legendarily awful 2022 class that contained Kenny Pickett, Desmond Ridder, Malik Willis and Matt Corral as the top four passers off the board.

As it stands only Shedeur Sanders and Carson Beck are on the 2025 big board of our draft expert J.P. Acosta, who notes that everyone else on this QB list either has major questions, or are simply just bad.

Do you want to build your franchise around Shedeur Sanders or Carson Beck? I didn’t think so.

So while the top-end talent of this 2024 class with Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye would turn heads in any year, it’s the second and third-tier quarterbacks who are really going to benefit from just how awful the 2025 class is. This is the primary reason McCarthy will vault up into the top 10, why Michael Penix and Bo Nix will be (at the very worst) second-round picks, and could both go in the back end of the first round. Beyond that it’s why we could see guys like Spencer Rattler and Jordan Travis go two-to-three ROUNDS ahead of where they would in another draft.

There is a tangible fear of being left out when it comes to the QB picture. Teams aren’t willing to wait until 2026 or later when they need a quarterback right now, and the veteran market has completely dried up. It’s created a perfect storm where all the hype is behind this class right now, when in reality it isn’t that much better than any previous years.

If we do a composite of the last three years of post-combine scouting grades from NFL.com it really shows the recency bias we have when it comes to this QB class.

  1. Bryce Young (2023): 6.82
  2. Caleb Williams (2024): 6.74
  3. Jayden Daniels (2024): 6.73
  4. C.J. Stroud (2023): 6.70
  5. Drake Maye (2024): 6.50
  6. Malik Willis (2022): 6.41
  7. Anthony Richardson (2023): 6.40
  8. J.J. McCarthy (2024): 6.40
  9. Kenny Pickett (2022): 6.40
  10. Matt Corral (2022): 6.40

Is this a good QB class? Yes. Is it a legendary one? Not really. However, the gravity of what the league is facing next year is so intense that there is going to be a feeding frenzy during this draft. The old logic of "wait until next year” no longer applies, and that’s why we could see some mammoth trades for players who really don’t deserve the investment as teams simply hope and pray they can find a quarterback now before the well is dry.

Buckle up, because it’s going to be a wild ride.

It seems the smokescreen regarding moving up for him in the teens was to throw teams off the scent on their real target to move up.   And they weren't able to land that guy, and so Mitchell becomes the consolation prize.   Frankly, that's a pretty good consolation prize.

I’m not complaining about the pick, and I think the Eagles genuinely believe they made the correct decision. But I think they were not necessarily overjoyed with the plate of options on their menu, at least compared to other years. If just felt like it was a "yeah, I guess he’s the best option of what we have so we’ll take him” situation.

What I’m happy about is that this wasn’t the scenario we’ve seen before where the Eagles are picking around 20th and pick someone that most people had rated in the 30s or 40s. Guys like Agholor or Smith or Reagor. Mitchell was a guy who was a consensus mid teens kind of pick.

I am a massive seller on Williams. I think he is an epic bust.

I don’t understand the admiration either. He was good at USC but Christ he wasn’t Luck at Stanford good like he’s being made out to be.

I don't think he will be a bust. He just may never play up to his potential.  He also may be the first NFL QB to play in drag.

JJ McCarthy doesn’t impress me. He looks small with a smaller arm. Honestly looks like Zach Wilson. Ceiling is probably Baker.  If the Vikings can have a top 5 run game then maybe I can see it working.

Hilarious people are using Penix’s age against him. He’s 24, not 34.

Brady was winning Super Bowls in his 40s. Rodgers and Manning were winning league MVPs well into their 30s.

It's worth looking at to an extent. Jalen Hurts is 25, he's been to a Super Bowl. Penix is 24 and has had every surgery known to man. The Packers really broke the mold with Aaron Rodgers and now Jordan Love by taking them in the 1st just to sit.

All things being equal, I think Fautanu was their guy. They're happy with Mitchell, but they'd be over the moon for the OL.

If the rumors are true that we're trying to hop up into the early 2nd, I wonder if it'll be for Suamataia or Powers-Johnson

Every surgery yet for the past two seasons has lit it up and stayed healthy. He’s a pocket passer and his arm is great.

Maybe it's for a lb finally? Get cooper who they visited with?

Not knocking his performance at all. Was just stating my thoughts on why people might be apprehensive about what Atlanta is doing.

McConkey or DeJean

They could have traded up with the Saints to take him, and the Seahawks always try to trade back. The fact that they didn't trade up, even with offensive players flying off the board, shows they were happy with the way things were falling. They knew the Steelers and Dolphins were never going CB, and that Cincy was definitely going oline. So they were always going to get either a top corner or edge rusher.

He’s still going from college to pro ball. I’ll be shocked if he’s not the starter in 2025, maybe even by midway through this season.

He may start this season because the Falcons don't have a great team and there will be pressure to put him in games.  The plan, however, isn't to have him start next season.  It's to have him take over in 2027.. The team almost has to cut Cousins in 3 seasons because he has a $57 million cap hit in 2027 and they only have a $12million dead cap charge to cut him prior to the season.  I can't imagine they have him be the back up in 2026 because at that point his cap hit is $57 million.  So Penix will get one year as a starter before they have to make a decision on an extension or have him play on a 5th year option and face a negotiation using the franchise tag. That's not a lot of time as a starter to decide if they need to re-sign him to a big deal or move on from him.  It's not a reasonable plan. With Cousin's contract, have negated the value of having a QB on a rookie deal.

So many good players left going into tonight. The Eagles should be fine to stay put at 50 and 53 and get two exciting prospects:

Defense: Cooper Dejean, Kool-Aid McKinstry, Max Melton, Edggerin Cooper, Payton Wilson, Junior Colson, Johnny Newton, Marshawn Kneeland, Adisa Isaac, Tyler Nubin, Javon Bullard

Offense: Jatavion Sanders, Ladd McConkey, Roman Wilson, Malachi Corley, Jackson Powers-Johnson, Christian Haynes, Cooper Beebee, Zak Zinter, Kingsley Suamataia, Roger Rosengarten, Blake Fisher

If Howie trades up for a LB it will be the clearest sign the rapture is upon us

But then again we never thought he'd give a RB a big contract so I guess we can't completely discount it.

I don't know that they'll need to trade up for Cooper though.

That’s almost like drafting Aaron Rogers when you’ve got Brett Favre.

That's a valid point. It seems to me like the real eff up was paying a 35 year old very good not great quarterback a 4 year contract worth $180 mil. with $100 mil. guaranteed.

I'm excited to see if Caleb Williams can have some success in the NFL.  Forgot they picked up DeAndre Swift, they also have Kennan Allen and Rome Oduze up there.  They could be entertaining to watch.

I saw a bit on ESPN where they were asking about playoffs for the Bears, it's not such a crazy suggestion.  If they can gel, they might give the Packers a run for the NFC North.

He's definitely got the tools to succeed. Don't know about the coaching though

DeJean as our slot CB would be a fantastic fit. Just ups the athleticism and toughness of the unit immediately.

Imagine the possibilities with CJGJ and Dejean in the secondary.

If the Eagles stick at 50 and 53 I wouldn't be surprised at TE and LB.  Sanders and Cooper/Colson would be fine with me.
