Shipley kind of reminds me of Deandre Swift.

Ok I love the Barkley deal

It comes down to roster construction and roster spots. The bottom line here is that the Eagles have added multiple players who are extremely talented returners and will also play larger roles on offense and defense. Covey is a PR and PR only. Now, maybe no one stands out and is worth saving on the active roster so the Eagles can afford the luxury of just having a roster spot devoted to a PR, but I'd rather them go heavy at a position and utilize players who can contribute in more than one way.

Edge/OLB- Josh Sweat, Bryce Huff, BG, Jalyx Hunt, Nolan Smith, Oren Burks/Julian Okwara- 7

LB- Devin White, Nakobe Dean, Jeremiah Trotter Jr., Zach Baun- 11

DT- Jalen Carter, Milton Williams, Moro Ojomo, Jordan Davis, Thomas Booker/Noah Ellis/Marlon Tuipulotu/PJ Mustipher- 16

DB- Darius Slay, Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Kelee Ringo, Isaiah Rodgers, CJGJ, Reed Blankenship, Sydney Brown, Tyler Hall, Avonte Maddox, Eli Ricks/Zech McPhearson/Josh Jobe/Mekhi Garner- 27

Rick Lovato, Jake Elliott, Braden Mann- 30

QB- Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett and Will Grier (I think they trade McKee during camp) 33

RB- Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley, Kenny Gainwell, Kendall Milton or Tyrion Davis-Price- 37

WR- AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, Parris Campbell, Ainias Smith, one of Devonta Parker, Johnny Wilson, Britain Covey- 42

TE- Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, CJ Uzomah- 45

OL- Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, Lane Johnson, Matt Hennessy, Fred Johnson, Trevor Keegan, Dylan McMahon- 54

Right there puts the roster at 54, and that's light on the OL and doesn't account for any camp surprises, other FA additions. So I've already gotta trim one player. Is Britain Covey as the PR and only the PR more valuable than one of the top reserve CB? Is he more valuable than DeVonta Parker or Johnny Wilson (both who bring a whole different skillset to WR)? Is Covey more valuable than Burks or Okwara who will be pass rushers and core ST players?

The Eagles are stacked with talent. Keeping a player who only does one thing doesn't make sense to me.

You forgot VanSumeran.

That was sentimental slop. The value was pure PR and not a football decision.

Trotter was generally seen as a 4th rd pick in this draft, Eagles got him late in the 5th rd. That's decent value.

I see him as very similar to Edwards, who was a UDFA, but in this draft would probably have been a 6th rd pick.

Similar size and profile, below average speed, elite instincts.

it took Edwards a redshirt season to become a NFL caliber LB, but he got quicker, stronger, better in coverage and his instincts made him above average against the run.

We'll see if Trotter can follow a similar career trajectory.

Worst part of this weekend is that I think the Chiefs nailed their draft.  I have terrible Chiefs fatigue and can’t stand them staying on top, but I worry they slayed their draft.

Why would you worry about the Chiefs?  They are already a dynasty and on top.  It’s not easy to sustain - likely harder than getting there to begin with.

That said - if we have the team we believe we have - if we were to face them again - both teams better than the last time we faced each other in the Super Bowl - how much better would that victory be if we were to "dethrone” the dynasty?

Easy to get excited when you watch Trotter. You really can't teach his instincts (something Nick Saban did a really great job discussing during the draft) and his closing burst looks elite to my untrained eye. When he decides to go, he goes and he hits what he intends to.

I'm happy with the Eagles draft from the players to the 2025 picks (especially the 3rd and 4th). However, it seemed like Howie got too cute. There were players to be had multiple times and looking back, yes, the Eagles slot may have been 3 to 5 picks earlier than those players went, but by trading down they missed them all together. At some point you just have to pull the trigger on some guys. There were RG for the taking almost every time the Eagles traded back.

I think too cute would have been trading out of 22 for more picks because they still liked multiple players at 22.

He definitely got cute after drafting DeJeane…but I don’t think it was excessively so.

I had him initially before I re-wrote the whole thing. Another player who they are high on and will be hard to keep off the final roster.

I look forward to seeing him in TC, great athlete who was very inexperienced due to moving around from FB to LB.

We'll see how much of his play last season was inexperience, how much was lack of instincts this season.

I think at worst he could be a top flight ST guy, at best, push White for the starting job.

Let me rephrase my last post. The Eagles would not have traded a pick for a future if they thought they could take an OL who would start this year or next year with that pick.

It's hard to say, 8 trades is a lot. Every trade led to another trade. I don't feel like tracing the moves right now but to get the 2025 3rd rounder, that started with an initial trade down. There were players I liked every time they traded down, but no one I was upset that they didn't get. Will be interesting to see how all of these guys perform.

The knock on DeJean and the opportunity with DeJean are 2 sides of the same coin.

Obviously, we’ll all be disappointed if he doesn’t end up a high end starter playing 90+% of the snaps once he matures.  But what position suits him?  Can you ruin him by moving him around too much and not letting him find a home?  Or do you unlock him by moving him around and having him fly all over the defense?

Fangio will be very, very important in the success or failure of this pick.

I think if you’re doing it right, you identify his primary role before the draft.

Let’s call it NCB for the sake of discussion.

Year 1, that’s all he does. He learns the NCB position top to bottom. No work at safety, no work on boundary corner. Just master that one position.

Then in year 2 you have him work on safety packages, but keep him mostly entrenched at NCB.

Then year 3 he should have mastered NCB and you get really creative.

Obviously your mileage may vary depending on how intelligent and quickly a player learns the playbook and develops from in game reps, but I think that’s a reasonable timeline.

Devin White, Nakobe Dean, Jeremiah Trotter Jr, Zack Baun and BVS. Is it possible they keep 5 LB? Could Deans spot be in trouble?

Also anecdotally, if you look at Howie's demeanor from the war room each day, he was far more subdued on day 1 than day 2 or 3. He was not pumping his fists or doing bro hugs to anyone after the Mitchell pick. I think he really wanted Fautanu or Fuaga. Possibly Mims. And the price to move up was just too rich. Day 2-3 he was all fired up after every pick.

I think that trying to make conclusions about the Eagles draft based on the level of perceived Howie enthusiasm is an exercise in futility.  For all you know, Howie feigns excitement when he is *not* enthused about a prospect to cover his lack of enthusiasm.  And whether or not he fist pumps or bro hugs after a pick probably has more to do with his relationship with the recipient of those actions than any bellwether giveaway about his enthusiasm for the pick.

Howie said they got 5 of their red star guys. Means they got guys they liked a lot.

Wilson will be interesting in how they use/coach him.  There’s a reason he went as late as he did.

As-is, he’s too slow with feet that are too sluggish to succeed as a WR in the modern nfl.

Hes too lanky and skinny to be legitimately considered as a TE.

So that’s why he was available.  If he can change one of those things, he’s got big time upside.  His ability to vertically snatch balls is hyper elite.  His speed would be outstanding for a TE.  Try to teach him to block and bulk up so he can be a mismatch nightmare at TE rather than an overgrown non separator at WR.

I doubt Wilson works out but I understand the lottery ticket in the 6th

I think they thought they’d have gotten an OL in the first 3 rounds, but in the 1st and 2nd at their picks they definitely weren’t the highest rated player. I don’t think it has anything to do with being cute, moreso the runs on OL left then thinner than they thought, and probably had a handful of guys rated higher at other positions.

NFC East 2024 draft classes:

Giants — Malik Nabers, Tyler Nubin, Andru Phillips, Theo Johnson, Tyrone Tracy, Darius Muasau

Commanders —  Jayden Daniels, JerZhan Newton, Mike Sainristil, Ben Sinnott, Brandon Coleman, Luke McCaffrey, Jordan Magee, Javontae Jean-Baptiste

Turds — Tyler Guyton, Marshawn Kneeland, Marist Liufau, Caelan Carson, Ryan Flournoy, Nathan Thomas, Justin Rogers

Eagles — Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, Jalyx Hunt, Will Shipley, Ainius Smith, Jeremiah Trotter Jr, Kevin Keegan, Johnny Wilson, Dylan McMahon

Just on first glance I’d say the Commanders did the best job narrowing the talent gap, the Giants had a fairly good draft, and the Turds haul is the least inspiring of the three.

Thoughts on the draft...

Quinyon: Perhaps his best pro comp is his teammate (Slay). Great talent, tough kid. Feels like a home run.

DeJean: Great athlete, smart, young (just turned 21 in Feb). Year 1 he's probably the nickel or at S, addresses one of their biggest needs, a coverage playmaker in the middle of the field. Adding CJGJ and DeJean is massive.

Jalyx Hunt: He can't play now. Needs at least a year in the weight room. Offers unique potential because of the burst, length, and coverage experience. Eagles gotta hit on a 3rd round project some day... right?

Will Shipley: More athletic, physically weaker version of Gainwell. Like him, but I'd prefer not to have both him and Gainwell on the same team.

Ainias Smith: I think I love this pick. Some are gonna see the height/40 combo and write him off. But I saw great toughness, great hands (supposedly had the 3rd lowest drop rate among WRs in the draft), great YAC. Ball tracking was there. More natural receiver skills than I expected from a "gadget guy."

Trotter, Jr: Like the value in the 5th. Is a pure LB, not an athlete trying to play LB. Fit playing next to Dean isn't ideal. Think he got knocked down too much during pre-draft.

Trevor Keegan: Seems like a long term backup and good culture guy.

Johnny Wilson: Great traits, but how is a guy with this kind of length and athleticism not a star? Wouldn't be shocked if he's among final cuts.

Dylan McMahon: Tyler Linderbaum was able to succeed with even shorter arms, but he was also a total stud coming out of college. Played guard in college, but ehhh.... I don't know if I see that in the pros. We'll see, he's great athlete.

WR will be the toughest position to make this year.  Loaded with talent - the most talent in the history of the franchise going into training camp - without question.

1. AJ Brown

2. DeVonta Smith

3. DeVonte Parker

4. Paris Campbell

Those 4 are likely locks.  Will we keep a 5th?  And if we do, who will it be?

Covey?  Draft picks?

the rappoport cam,  where they just put a camera on rappoport and he just does what he wants.   It's just him talking on the phone or looking at his texts.  Occasionally then just saying the thing.  "Eagles get Mitchell"  And the graphics on the screen aren't great, they're not bad, but they could be better. could have all those data points like ras and running times and jumping distances and all that.  "you see, turning when running fast, that's the 3 cone".

I didn't think the NFL Network broadcast was annoying though.  It was fine.  In 2024, things are expected to get worse.  If something is slightly worse than last year,  it's the same.  There isn't any  expectation that things,  like a tv show,  are going to get better.

I used Youtube and would flip between streams depending on what was going on. Only found it today but Bleacher Report woth Mike Renner was the best I found thru the 3 days. Him and some other guy would discuss how he had the player rated and show a few clips and then they would both grade the pick. PFF has a draft stream but it’s just 3 guys roundtabeing, no clips

2025 picks

CB gonna be harder to compete for a spot tbh.

I don’t think Parker is a lock, especially with 6’6 Johnny Wilson. Parker doesn’t separate, and if that becomes Wilson’s issue, he’s 6’7 230 and can work only on blocking and effort to become a giant Pascal.
