The defense feels that way because they not only stupidly panicked and made a switch at DC, Patricia changed up the terminology and had them learn it on the fly in week 14. Any player is going to look lost changing the defense that much, that late in the season.

2010 is such a long time ago in the NFL. Offenses have changed a lot since then.

But he's been a head coach, which includes being on top of every aspect. Offense, Defense, Special Teams. So, wouldn't he be very aware of how offenses have changed since he's a head coach?

I'm not saying he's the right choice, but it's not like he's been unemployed since 2010 and has no clue about the NFL.

Ron will become interim HC about a 1/3 of the way through next season.

Yep, I just saw that this morning, too.  Honestly surprised that he didn't sign someplace already?  I thought the Ravens were the leading contenders?  Anyhow, I'm all in on the Lions, too.  This would be the best story from the season if they could pull this off.

OK, if you all don't like it, let me point out a few things:

1. First, Rivera is looking for a good soft landing spot as a DC where he will stay as long for a while.  He won't be a one and done coordinator.

2. He's been a fantastic DC everywhere he's gone.

3. He's a very well respected guy around the league.

4. Hiring him as DC will piss off Commanders fans.

I'd love to bring him in as DC.   He'd be a good hire.

1. He'll be one and done if they move on from Nick after next year, who will clearly be on the hot seat

2. Ages ago

3. Sure

4. Exact opposite. Most are laughing at the Eagles.

For the record I don't want Ron Rivera.

However, his defense was "fine" this year when they had Young and Sweat. It just feel apart after they traded both of them.

Not the pass defense. It was the worst in the NFL all season.

Oh yeah DC fans will be so mad that we hired him.

Sure, he's aware. Has he been installing anything to slow it down while he was HC? If yes, then he sucks at it because Washington D has always underachieved. If no, can he? And why wouldn't he do anything if he could all those years he was HC?

Yeah, this is a don't steal our DC type move instead of hiring the best guy.

Anyone think the Texans are dumb enough to not resign Jonathan Greenard? He'd be someone I want the Eagles "legally tampering" with.

Good all around guy.  Positive attitude, respects the players, etc.   Could be a nice fit here, imo.

Commanders defense this year:

  • Yards allowed: worst in the league at 32nd
  • Pass defense: worst in the league at 32nd
  • Run defense: 27th in the league
  • Scoring: worst in the league at 32nd

A guy who believes in the importance of LB on a team that doesn't care about them. What could go wrong?

Maybe he can influence a change in philosophy?

You said nothing about his ability to call a defense though lol

Coaches just need to slip the buzzword "analytics" into every discussion about roster upgrades to get what they want.

"NFL next gen stats show that high quality linebackers..."

Howie isn't new to this rodeo. Rivera isn't going to change a 14 year philosophy.

"oh LB's are important to you? Fine, we'll re-sign Nick Morrow."

The Eagles should end up going through at least 3-4 potential candidates.  They’ll eventually get the guy they want/best fit.

The only thing I’m pretty certain of it won’t be a  Fangio system/coaching tree guy.

The most exciting thing about the names mentioned is that the majority, if not all of them are the furthest thing from a Fangino based defense. We SHOULD be seeing major changes to the way this team plays defense. No matter who comes in, the big question will be how much say do they have during FA and the draft. I love the thought of a new philosophy on defense but these DC's are going to need players to fit them and not just leftover kind of signings. Is Howie cool with letting the new DC and his staff pick the players they will want?

I agree, and his defense was crap last year. Just trying to follow the logic. Lots of former head coaches go back to being a coordinator and have success.  Simply not being a coordinator doesn't mean they can't keep up with that side of the ball. Now, Ron might be washed up and not worth it though.

Seems like another overcorrection this front office does (if he were hired, we'll see).  Go away from the young guys and get someone old and respected. He won't be innovative, he won't be amazing but he'll bring some stability and fundamentals.

Then be gone in a year or 2.

As bad as this defense looked this past season, pretty sure anything is on the table atm - including defensive philosophy changes.  I would hope so, anyway.

You guys like Wink for DC?

Whatever it is they'll need to make sure Davis, Carter, and Nolan fit

Desai and Patricia Gone.  Brand new Defense on the way.   Let's get it right this time.   Howie needs to invest heavy into the Defense.  Offensive needs a few adjustments but for the most part they did produce this year.   Our Defense wasn't as tough as last year too me.  They were letting too many lesser QB's have field days.   We need to get back to that Tough Eagles Defense.
