Theres a lot in there about safeties fitting in the run game which explains why Blankenship is so good for this system. When they talked about Desai spinning safeties last year we imagined one of the guys was going to end up in single high and need great range and couldnt understand why we had 2 SS types. But the safeties are run defenders, and defending shallow crosses- attacking downhill on those things.

Sydney Brown will need to improve as a tackler or he will bust in this system. It probably rules out Calen Bullock completely. And makes sense why Gardner-Johnson was not overpaid here (even though no other team thought he was worth paying much either). Kinchens looks like the best most well rounded safety if we look early in the draft. Bullard seems well fit for the role even if hes slightly more one dimensional.  A bit later on, University of Washington safety Dominique Hampton (6'3'' 220lb) is extremely intriguing.

It also talks about playing man on one side of the defense and zone on the other. This is what I saw when I repeatedly pointed out how Slay is not as bad as people think but he is best in man. Meanwhile Bradberry wasnt as bad as people think but he needs to be in zone coverage. The big issue was that teams kept seeming to find ways to get Bradberry caught in man and he was consistently toasted.  (And Im still very much wanting to make him a post June 1st cut).

It also talks about using the CBs as "force defenders" in the run game. Cooper DeJean seems like a match made in heaven for this defense. Kamari Lassiter may not be as versatile in his coverage abilities (more of a zone guy) but might be the best run defending CB and wouldnt be a bad option at all.

They can hire Fangio, Belichick, Parcells, Rex Ryan, Mike Zimmer and Dick Labeau to run this defense together.

Won't make a difference unless they improve personnel.

fans are forgetting that when we had jim johnson, his blitzes were working because we had an elite secondary, no one seems to understand to when you blitz you are leaving your secondary on a island and if they cant make plays, the d will get torched. it doesnt work for the sake of it, you need the right personal for the blitz to work. we dont have that.

So I wanted to share this amazing piece of Eagles memorabilia I picked up at a random yard sale I poked my head into when dropping off my son at a buddy’s house. While they may not be one of a kind in the whole world, they’re definitely pretty rare in the states. I mean, there may be some areas in random places like Zimbabwe or the Philippines where we are recognized as SB39 champs I suppose… But for $2 it was worth it. Still sealed.

Azeez Al-Shaair is my realistic LB signing

Well Fangio did hold the Dak Cowboys to just 20 points so there's that at least.

Earth #60420 in another MCU universe we won that Super Bowl and mcnabb only pukes in the locker room after celebrating

They only scored 23 in the first game against us, so that’s not really an amazing feat.

You could also make the same argument by those who think it's a home run hire. It all comes down to expectations in the end. My concerns with the hire are the talent inputs needed to get a successful output. Or what even is defined as "successful" in the first place. So maybe it's better to ask what your benchmark for his performance would be. Top-5 in pts allowed by year's end? Top-10?

I don’t think there are many in here calling this a home run hire. I think, and maybe I’m not reading it correctly, that more people than not are down on the hire.

I don’t have a set expectation for end f the year rankings because I don’t know the make up of the defense, and frankly, injuries make such a difference. If I had to set the bar today, I’m probably aiming for middle of the pack, with room to go up a bit based on how the offseason goes.

Man, still remember how TO defied the odds and balled his butt off in that game. He would have been MVP, if they would’ve somehow pulled it out.

Then we are pretty much aligned, I'm very much expecting mediocrity based on the roster issues at hand. A top-10 finish would be a surprise. A bottom-10 finish would be frustrating.

What this told me was that if we don't have good LBs we're F'ed, so as it currently stands we're F'ed six ways to Sunday

It’s technically true since the patriots cheated.

The play that still hurts is the wheel route with westbrook. If mcnabb throws it to westbrook it’s an easy touchdown and that game might go completely different.

My new theory is one of Lurie/Howie wanted to fire Sirianni. The other wanted to keep him. So they met in the middle and kept him but with limited power and stripping him of offensive control.

Hopefully Fangio is at least a 3-4 year hire, so the idea of drafting/acquiring players that fit his defensive scheme will hold more weight.  The Eagles knew Gannon was only going to be there a couple of years; I think Howie was quoted as saying "We're just borrowing Jonathan Gannon" -- makes it harder to draft and build defensive personnel when you know the coordinator will not be there long.

If Fangio can bring a logical successor (there was mention of Renaldo Hill) then you can build a defense behind a philosophy, which is what the Eagles need to do on defense.

Since we have been discussing defense… the way our defense played in the second half of that game was also sooo frustrating if I remember correctly.

Howie and Sirianni are tight.  You can see it in most PCs (obviously not yesterday since the tone had to be contrite for the collapse).

I'd imagine he will be. We need three LBs, at least one corner, another safety and another end. We know Howie isnt great at drafting any of them.

Probably didn't help that the other team stole all our defensive signals. Funny how there was such a marked difference after half-time and the Pats offense seemed to have the perfect counter for our calls at the most opportune times.

I always thought Fangio was the best DC in league. Sure we soured on the system last year but he's a defensive guru I'm very happy with the hire

This is the aspect that I like most of the hire.  The Eagles D need some discipline and accountability from someone who isn't afraid to hurt their fragile egos.

That's probably why there were player complaints in Miami.  Star players like Ramsey etc are used to getting their way and avoiding accountability.  That doesn't fly with Fangio.
