Also remember this same situation kinda happened with Slay last year and they ended up working it out.

  • For those that know me here I wanted to pass on the good news. I will be retiring from fulltime work in October of this year. Looking forward to not working 10 hour days anymore.

If we trade Reddick then Burns will 100% be an Eagle

Nolan Smith is the long term plan; doesn’t mean they can’t bring in DE help in FA. Ā Signing an edge rusher to any lucrative contract would seem pretty wasteful, though. Ā If you can’t count on your first round pick to be a starter in Year 2, that’s a pretty bad pick.

This is Howie we are talking about here, most of his defensive picks are bad or simply miss the mark.

It doesn't have to be all or none, there can be a balance. Speaking of investing heavily in the trenches, how about just paying your best pass rusher? That would be one way to do it. Their problem isn't investing in it, it's how they choose to invest in it. Letting your best players walk and then needing to use your best picks to replace them is an inefficient way to improve a roster. It's more kicking the can down the road than anything. This team has a championship window they need to capitalize on.

I 100% agree they need to invest in other areas too. It's not all or none. I just see it that Reddick wants a new deal and the Eagles are focused on investing in other areas right now. Which means they don't want to commit more money to the DL.

Not if the Panthers franchise him.

I mean they can’t count on him. He didn’t do anything as a rookie and wasn’t exactly the epitome of health at Georgia. Don’t think the eagles make the same mistake they just did with Dean. This would be exactly the same thing they tried to do last year and it failed. Again hard time seeing the eagles trade a pro bowl pass rusher, a position they covet, in a Super Bowl window and just think insert smith in there when that’s what they got burned doing with Dean at LB the previous year.

I don’t see the eagles going from one of the best pass rushers in the league to just hoping smith stays healthy and shows more than he did year 1 cause he was the 30th pick. If they were in a rebuild I’d agree with you. In a SB window i don’t see an organization that covets that above all else on defense making that type of decision. Ā Ā

Haven’t they had a rather tumultuous relationship?

DL/EDGE: Though the Fangio Defense may be thought of back to front, the trenches are where the fun starts. In the base 3-4 that Fangio uses, the defensive line generally does not attack up the field aggressively in the same way as some single-high structures demand. Instead, high-level technique and an understanding of leverageĀ  help clog up double teams while linebackers can leverage the running back for tackles. On the interior, Fangio has had players like Akeem Hicks and Justin Smith at the 3-4 defensive end spot while Eddie Goldman was a nose tackle for the Bears. The outside linebackers play standing up and help set the edge while also being asked to drop into pass coverage.

This is what causes me concern about Reddick actually wanting to play in this defense.

New coaching staff , I would think they want Burns backĀ

I'm not sure, but he's a great young player in the league. They may want to protect themselves by tagging him, even if they do so just to seek out a quality trade.Ā

What would Reddick fetch? A high 1st? Low? Not even a 1st?

Bucs will be cutting Shaq Barrett, maybe they trade for ReddickĀ

Isn't it a waste to have Carter not rushing the passer?

Ā

Slay was 33 years old.Ā  Reddick is turning 30 but he's still young enough and the league covets pass rushers enough that someone is going to be willing to pay him.Ā Ā

They’ve been dangling him and had offers they turned down. I’d assume they didn’t want to pay him.

Can players refuse the tag? Or is it just a holdout mess?

Ā

He should get at least a 1st round pick.Ā  I'd think at least something like a 1st and a 4th, maybe a future pick as well.Ā Ā

I’m guessing not a 1st as he’s 29 going on 30 and needs a new contract (30 in September). I’m guessing it’s maybe a 2nd and a conditional 2025 pick. If he didn’t need a new contract along with draft compensation you’d likely get more.Ā

He can not sign the tag then he'd be a holdout. It's a mess.Ā

Isn't he still under contract?

I should have quoted the entire part for DL/EDGE

DL/EDGE: Though the Fangio Defense may be thought of back to front, the trenches are where the fun starts. When the defense turns to their Nickel package, the most used package for Fangio, they deploy a 2-4-5 format. The two interior defensive linemen are generally the 3-4 defensive ends, and the outside linebackers become edge rushers. While it is technically a 2-4-5 by numbers, it will look like and play like a 4-2-5. The outside linebackers pass rush ability is key to speeding up the offense. Players like Khalil Mack succeeded in this role.Ā

There's definitely a lot of great information in the article if you haven't checked it out yet. Kind of gives a little insight into who potentially will be playing which roles next year.

But now they are tied up with Slay as he gets older, becomes more injury prone and his skillset starts to diminish. Slay is still their best CB but that's also by default.Ā

You have to assume the Eagles know the market and also probably have a sense of who might come in as a FA.

Brian Burns, Yetur Gross-Matos, Jerome Baker, Josh Allen, AJ Epenesa, Josh Uche are all guys I have on my list. All are under or just around 26 years old.

I look at Brian Burns and Yetur Gross-Matos. Both are just about to turn 26 and entering their prime after playing OLB in a 3-4 last year for the first time. Burns is going to get paid, and IMO, there's a very good chance the Eagles have him as their #1 target and are prepared to dump serious cash on him. However, Gross-Matos is going to get serious cash too based on his potential.Ā

I really like Josh Allen and think he could be the consolation prize for whoever doesn't get Burns.

I think you need to be thinking more like a 3rd or 4th

If he was younger, I think a 1st would be doable. I just don't think he would bring back that much.Ā

Probably a secondĀ
