What are your expectations for Davis then? Do you he will ever play more than 50% of the snaps? Do you think it's smart to trade up for a guy who's impact is limited to half of a game? If you're drafting a CB in the 1st round, he's either CB1 or CB2. He's not coming off the field. You're getting more value just by playing time.

I think anyone already saw flashes of what he could be with that crazy sideline hustle he made. Guy ran like 4.78 or something while clearly overweight. The truth of the matter is, if you can get him to shed bad weight or help him to be better at shedding bad weight (conditioning coach needs to contact the MMA guys, they work their weight all the time) then he'll become a very good talent very quickly.

His development will be mostly made or broken by physical traits rather than personal talent, which is odd but it does happen every so often.

Interesting he'd want to stick with Cousins

He has his whole career with Kirk, and there isn’t an issue with getting him the ball.

Stats to back that up ? I can’t recall which players said it , but he said DT is the easiest position to learn

I’ll see if I can’t find the quote

There have been multiple article posted in here talking about it. I'll see if I can find one of them.

More complicated than that. NT comes off the field in the Fangio 3-4 in passing situations, but is a key player in the base formation, allowing you to be lighter and more athletic at ILB and safety. So it's not just what he gives you at NT, it's how that allows you to find players at other positions. If Davis dominates the interior, and forces teams to double team him, makes it harder to double Carter, etc., or give OTs help on the outside. If you have to double both Davis and Carter, you end up with a TE on a 3-4 OLB.

Since teams pass 50-60% even on run downs, a NT who can collapse the pocket from the inside in your base defense has value exceeding the number of snaps he plays.

Cox was on a podcast WITH Cam Heyward, it might have even been Cam Heyward's Podcast, about them doing great things together.  Cox didn't rule out the possibility of going to Pittsburgh, and might have actually suggested it was a real possibility.

He didn't indicate that at all. It was just respect for each other as players.

Video below to see and hear what was actually said.

I'm not trying to "break news"

I share what I see being shared. It was being discussed before I posted the tweet. I'll keep sharing what I see being shared

What you saw being shared was nonsense with no backup evidence, it was click bait. Here's the actual podcast starting right at the question he was asked. There's nothing here about wanting to play with the Steelers.

Cam: "If you could play alongside any current or past D linemen, who would you choose?"

Fletch paused, thought about it, said "Current? I've played with Suh" paused again, then said "you" and paid Cam respect. He said "that would've been nice" in the past tense, not any talk of future plans or wanting to play for the Steelers.

Then Cam briefly said "We'd make some things happen" before moving on. That's all it was.

The defensive coaching was such a mess last year, basically everyone but Bradberry gets a mulligan. I'm really interested to see Nolan Smith with better coaching.

I think Smith also needed a year in the weight room, a little light for 3-4 OLB. But He's a better fit than Reddick or Sweat, so those trade rumors may have substance.

One player who may also get traded is Williams, arms are too short for 3-4 DE, so he'd be a situational pass rusher as a DT on pass downs if he stays, but if they have to pay him, he has more value as a "3" in a conventional 4-3 set.

who cares if he posted the tweet? It was something to discuss in the offseason.

We assume Cox will be gone anyway. No one got flustered. It didnt cause a stir.

Stop overreacting.

Think the problem with Reddick (and maybe Sweat) is they're more 4-3 rush ends than 3-4 OLBs.

If Bradley Chubb can play well as an OLB in Fangio’s scheme, there’s no reason why Reddick or Sweat can’t.

Ok

More from Cox on the Cam Heyward podcast:

  • Likes hiring Vic Fangio
  • They call the tush push/brotherly shove play "Snoopy"
  • The starting defense has never practiced against the offense running "Snoopy"
  • Expectations very high for Davis and Carter when a 1st round pick. They practice hard. Carter is a freak. Jordan has come a long way and played more downs.

Sure, but the vast majority of folks in here wanted nothing to do with Karlaftis.  There's picking the right guy, then the more important part of drafting which is developing the player to be the right guy.  I'd say the Chiefs are doing a far better job of developing players.

Yeah, and a lot didn’t want McDuffie either.

Whoa, Cox hinted that Davis is a bust!

1 hour ago, Iggles_Phan said:

That's just not true.  Didn't you hear what Darius Slay had to say about his own play?   Dude was stellar.

Yeah lmao. He’ll always say he played great even when he gets torched.

Totally going to be labeling year 2 guys busts lmao.

Y’all act like we didn’t have Brandon Graham for 40 years lmao. Now he’s beloved and his traditional stats and sack numbers say meh.

People started reacting and speculating without the facts or context, some even said they recalled the podcast and thought Cox said he wants to play for the Steelers, or mentioned it as a possibility. That was incorrect.

People latch onto click bait and then narratives happen. The sky was falling when people thought Reddick requested a trade and wanted out, turns out he didn't request a trade and prefers to stay in Philly. These rumors and false narratives end up being perpetuated for years around here. It's important to have the actual context and facts.

I'd be shocked if Cox plays next year -- he's retiring.

Of course, "you” didn’t.   Frankly, I suspect that in the opening salvo of negotiating an extension, your agent threw out a ridiculous suggestion to which Howie scoffed.  In response to Howie, your agent suggested other teams would pay that.  I suspect Howie’s reply was to say, "fine, go out and see what trade offer you can get from one of those teams.  Now we value Haason so the return for our team would have to be commiserate with that value.  I’ll let the word out that we have authorized you to seek a trade.”  Let’s face it.  Howie knows how to play this game and is realistic that Reddick is a SAM playing undersized DE that limits the D if he can’t cover.  Sacks are nice but he needs to bring more for his current price.  Wanting escalations into his post 30 years is unrealistic especially if Nolan Smith was worth a first and demonstrates any ability to drop in coverage.

Sweat has received a lot of angst on here.  He is a full DE that has actually shown some ability to drop.  And he is an amazing athlete.

1. Defensive tackle is not a complicated position mentally. You're eating up space. Obviously there are stunts and games where you move and exchange gaps but you're generally playing THE MOST physically demanding position in a phone booth in the A/B gaps. Typically vs. the run you are in charge of holding the point and squeezing the gap that you're assigned to.

When you're stunting you're generally moving at a 45-degree angle from one gap to the next. You have to be able to recognize blocking schemes so you don’t lose your gap and understand what the offensive line is trying to do to you. It’s not rocket science. Defenses are very personnel- and package-driven now so if you're an elite run stuffer like Georgia’s Jordan Davis then they will try to get you out in passing situations or just fake an injury to get the right personnel on the field to match up. The defensive tackle is almost always the guys faking the injury if you haven't noticed

First this is for the college game, second, it doesn't mention how long it takes for them to get their body in the right configuration to handle it as it even alludes to by saying, "you're generally playing THE MOST physically demanding position in a phone booth in the A/B gaps." I'm still looking for the articles that were posted early in the season here talking about it that in the NFL DT is one of the positions where it takes longer to start and contribute than many other positions.

Definitely DT is the easiest to see the field
