Seems to me the Eagles should have claimed TDP off waivers and cut Penny back on Dec. 5. Okwara was cut by Detroit in the playoffs and then added to their PS. I’m not sure the rules there, so maybe the Eagles couldn’t claim him? He was set to be a free agent anyway so there wasn’t any benefit to claiming him.

i also think it’s pretty risky. These are guys who either cleared waivers or could be poached at some point but weren’t. Is their best chance at sticking on a roster going somewhere completely different where no one knows you? Or coming back to a team with familiarity and coaches who already know you? Generally speaking I’d think signing a futures deal is their best bet.

I think that’s exactly it in these cases. Most players see comfort in familiarity, so we agree there. We see it all the time at the end of camp when teams scramble to fill out their PS, and it’s almost always with players from their camp. Some players, however, see the writing on the wall and want to go elsewhere to compete. San Francisco’s top three backs are all under contract in 2024, and Mitchell/Mason are in cheap rookie deals. It was over for him there, while we have only Gainwell under contract. This is objectively a better place for him to make a roster. Okwara spent four years in Detroit and it didn’t happen for him. His brother is also set to leave when his contract voids. He was set to be a FA. Detroit probably didn’t want him back anyway, but he did flash a bit his second year with 5 sacks. He likely drew some attention from teams, but we have a spot for a depth edge rusher.

Terrell Lewis, who the hell knows? Maybe we were the only team that wanted him.

TDP would have cost a high third round level salary.  This is cheaper, I think.

It’s hard to tell now that he was cut so the cap sites don’t have clean contract details, but TDP’s base salary in 2023 was 640K. Spotrac has it at 915K for the Eagles in 2024, plus he got guaranteed money.

I looked at Sean Rhyan’s contract. He went one pick ahead of TDP. His 2024 base is $1.17M so the Eagles likely saved money. Of course that’s negligible if you actually prefer TDP to Penny.

I believe some PS level players opted for the UFL to get playing time, film and experience. I imagine that teams will be scouting the UFL some this year with the USFl andXFL merger.   A J McCarron sought his release to go back to the UFL, for example.  Rosters include several former members of Eagles 90 man and PS rosters.

I don't see how people aren't generally extremely optimistic.   Last year proved they could go 10-1 with 4 very good or better players at the skill positions.   They have all 4 of them coming back.   Every other player at the skill positions was below average.   The Eagles are able to keep their 4 best pieces on offense, and have 8 other positions which can be upgrades.  2 starting positions are open,  RB and WR3orTE2 (probably)   The Eagles got nothing special from the RBs,  good results there due largely to Great OL. And that other spot is a mystery spot that could be filled by a very good player,  a mid 2nd round pick.   You have the 4 core QB/WR/WR/TE coming back.  And this year everything else was not notable.  Add notable stuff.  It's really easy.  Who would be the best weapon on offense with the 2nd round pick?   Add that player with the 2nd round pick.  I'd say Xavier Legette at this point before the combine.   He's supposed to put up good numbers to go along with 220+ WR and 22.3 mph - faster run than any NFL run this year.  And a HS QB who ran for 1800+ yards his senior year.  I would spend a pick to get a guy who can take a snap, who is about Jalen's size, and is the fastest player in the NFL.    And Legette is also that potent downfield threat that Watkins wasn't, and apparently the Eagles need to have in their offense.   I'd want to look at his numbers, how he compares to Metcalf and Deebo Samuel.  So,  the main difference in the offense between last year,  and this year,  would be - added fastest player in the NFL.  So, be optimistic.

TL;DR

I rewatched 'Freaks and Geeks.'

How TF did that show get canceled after 1 1/2 seasons?

It was golden with a great cast of characters.

Off topic? This is from outer space. Wasn’t that show in the late 90s?

Based on what?

They hired 2 experienced coordinators - which everyone wanted them to do. They hired some new position coaches that are experienced including with coordinator experience, which is what fans wanted. They've signed some roster bubble/camp body guys as usual which likely won't make the team.

Free agency starts next month then the draft. There's nothing else football related to worry about yet. There's gossip and speculation from hacks and unnamed sources, and Fletcher Cox wants Hurts to be more vocal.

So?

I started listening to the Go Birds pod (yes I know ESP is a bit of a clown) and they were saying there’s nothing good coming from the organisation at the moment. But then I couldn’t listen further.

How bad of a player are you when your agent is like "yea just sign a one year deal now. No point to wait until the combine or the legal tampering period.”

I think Albert O has something to offer as a receiving TE.  It could be that he won’t be inactive with KM…but I hear you.  The Eagles didn’t do anything to help his perceived value last year.

No idea if this guy is sources, but playing along that it’s true… it’s baffling the Eagles didn’t push to sign him to the PS when the Niners cut him, but maybe they did, so why not just claim him and cut Penny, whom they signed to no guaranteed money?

So many questions about how and why they do certain things on the roster.   Why trade for Albert O just to mire him on the inactive list all year... but then immediately resign him for another 1 year deal?  Why sign Penny and then hold on to him when they clearly had no intention of ever using him?  Cut bait and move on.

For all the talk about Howie 'churning' the bottom of the roster... those two stand in stark contrast to that notion.  Meanwhile, the Eagles might have let their best ST player go in Ellis rather than demote either of those two to the PS.

People keep saying the Eagles had a tough schedule in 2023. It was on paper, it wasn’t that bad in reality. 7 games were against teams picking in the top 10 of the draft this year. It was very middle of the pack.

Here’s the rank based on the final 2023 strength of schedule.

It's more that the Eagles basically played all the good teams except Baltimore in the regular season. That almost never happens. That 5 game stretch is one of the hardest in NFL history. All 5 opponents made the previous year's final 8 (Dallas, KC, Buffalo, SF, Dallas). An absurd stretch.

a couple years from now people will begin to figure out how the eagles found an extra 60M in cap space due to the way these Okwara and Davis-Price contracts were structured.

Hopefully HOWIE figures it out so that he has more than $8M to spend on ALL his linebackers and safeties on the roster.

But then they'd lose out on the potential comp pickz when Penny signs elsewhere this offseason.   Its all about the comp pickz.

Should have kept Barnett in that case.

Elliss was not our best ST player last year and couldn’t play LB.  VanSumeren is fine in that role, more athletic too.  Ringo was pretty good on coverage teams last year.
