I still remember when we gave Jernigan that deal, then we gave Malik Jackson that deal, Fletcher was making mega bucks and we still went and gave Javon a huge deal. "Another DT?! WTF is going on…” was my frozen in time reaction

Howie likes his DT depth more than almost anything, and if Cox leaves or retires our room is a NT with 2 years experience, a 3tech with 1 year of experience, and Milton Williams. Even with their talent, we’ve got a hole there

Yep.

I've suggested that this free agency should be OL (Runyan or more maybe someone better) and DT.

Maybe we don't go for Wilkins but there are some good ones that will require a sizeable contract.

We can afford those 2 positions and still sign a LB, and a S.

When those guys got those deals though, had the eagles just invested back to back top 15 picks on DTs?

Would they eve be able to sign another high end FA? They desperately need two of CB/S/LB in FA (likely S and LB) and they can use their first on a CB. If they signed Wilkins to that monster deal, who could they afford at S and LB?

What we don't need is another great line wasted because QBs get the ball out in under 2 seconds against a garbage back 7

Couldn't agree more.  Spend the money where it is desperately needed.

What sucks is that they will bring in Wilkinson and the DT they traded 4 picks for is now a backup. Terrible use or resources.

Scheme will be some of that, but Howie has done more with less. We do have some room this offseason and Wilkins’ year 1-2 cap hits will be low wherever he goes.

1st round invested picks means they may not be as ready as the seasoned FA’s we’ve brought in in the past. Are we for sure that Carter is up for 700 snaps next season? Is Jordan an every down player? There will always be a rotation on the dline, and we have 500-800 snaps to fill at DT. It’s just a matter of FO perspective of if we’d be better off with that snap count being filled by a 5m$ player or a 20m$ player

With the investment they've already made with Davis and Carter they should be bringing in mid tier FA as rotations, not relegating them to the rotational role IMO. We'll never see what they can handle if we just bring in Wilkins and they rotate, it'll be just like having Cox here.

They should start Carter and Davis, have Milton, a mid tier FA rotate, and they can draft a guy in the later rounds to rotate. Plus they have the 30 other bottom of the roster DTs they love to hoard.

Personally, I would not be thrilled with the allocation of resources if they did bring Wilkins in unless there were some miracle moves made in the back 7.

They can't afford me.

Eagles have a rotation though... well when they were successful they did anyway

They're not gonna use a first on a CB. Not Howies style

Wouldn't be shocked to see it go down like this:

RD1: OT (Mims or Guyton)

RD2: DT (Taylor or Orhorhoro)

RD2: LB/S (Lots of possibilities)

Howie likes lines.

Hurts to Denver for Surtain and a 2nd.

We all know how this NFL script will play out. Jurgens gets some major injury in TC or early in the season and Howie makes the call

I would have liked Kelce as a backup Center and starting FB.  Cheap contract,  which becomes expensive if Kelce starts.  Vet minimum + $1M a game as a starting Center, or any game where he plays Center.  Kelce gets TDs as FB.     In the future,  the same type of thing for Lane.  Backup OT and Blocking TE who gets TDs.

The players that people like are the OL more than whoever the RB is this year.  I'd rather Kelce and Lane scoring TDs than some generic RB or WR or TE.   Getting Kelce and Lane TDs would get them into the hall faster and the people would want Kelce and Lane in the hall faster.

Yeah DT is not like LT or WR where these guys are the starters and those guys are the backups…

It’s just pure snap counts. With Carter and Milton and Jordan they will still have a starter’s worth of snaps available with how they move those guys around.

If Cox retires they have to replace his 58% of snaps.

Carter in his 2nd year should be taking more snaps. Davis, we have to see if he has a good offseason of conditioning and can increase his snaps. They traded up and gave up 3 extra picks to get him. Williams snap count probably won't change much. So probably a veteran DT or draft pick to rotate in with Carter also taking more snaps. Ojomo and Tuipulotu might see a slight increase but not reliable enough.

Wentz was just a few years ago too

I think if they can't move up for a target and the BPA is Edge or WR Howie bites

Howie is an NFL trailblazer.

If he quits tomorrow, he and Kelce could go into the HOF in the same class ......

Let’s say ESPN offers 10m for New Heights to be on their network and him to be a part time contributor to NFL tonight, First Take, and Mcafee.

You would convince him to turn that down and go play NFL football for 1m$ when he retired partly due to physical issues?

Why would he ever do that?

fun to joke about but I bet teams are doing this at this level partly because they saw how Howie got over it so quickly when it was an insane ask at the time

In this scenario, they would have to sign two high end players at CB/S/LB. Because if they don't land a top flight CB/S/LB in FA then this draft would be an absolute disaster.

A backup OT, a THIRD premium pick in a row spent on a rotation player, and then one player at one of the three positions they desperately need help at. In a vacuum, this draft would be an abject failure for the team as currently constructed

I agree.  I want them to spend on the back 7 in FA rather than giving Wilkins 20+ million.

I mean, Howie was prepared to take Surtain or Horn if they were there in 2021. Howie would do it, but he'll always lean lineman all things equal.

That was a hell of a speech. Loved the sarcastic dig at Celek's bar only staying open for six months 🤣

Is there a good place to watch it now?
