IMO, the most interesting thing about Kelce hasn't really been mentioned amongst all this hoopla.  He's the biggest superstar in the history of offensive linemen.  Larry Allen, Anthony Munoz, Ogden.  No offense to Kelce...they were more dominant, more valuable.  But none achieved even a fraction of his late career stardom.  He's arguably the biggest and first/only superstar OL in NFL history.

We all know OL is important and they can be superstars within the game, but that star never shines outside the stadium.  That is reserved for QBs, WRs, (RBs in a prior generation), and transcendent perennial defensive players of the year.

I've seen posts on social media from fans of other teams who said they've never paid as much attention to a Center's career as with Kelce, and that will likely never happen again, showing how special he is.

It's also the off the field stuff and his recent fame outside of football in recent years. A lot of people respected him from the Amazon Prime documentary as well. And of course now the Swifties love him and follow the New Heights podcast.

I don't think that matters as much as you think it does.  Look at this play:

Tell me what blocks you think Dickerson can't make.  Take a look at how he moves and what blocks he's called on to make in the zone scheme.  The thing with the scheme is that all of the O-line has to move and make potential reach blocks.  They do have Kelce have a pin and pull with Kelce sometimes on outside zone but Dickerson is just as capable of getting out in front of that pin and pull concept.

You’re asking a 6-6 330-pounder (probably weighs more now)  to snap the ball and get out of his stance to make those same blocks as Kelce. Good luck. He doesn’t have the foot speed and agility to do these things well enough. Not to mention his history of foot, ankle and knee injuries.

Most of the fans on here thought he'd be Kelce's replacement as well. It's fine if you disagree, but don't act like majority of media and fans weren't talking about him being Kelce's replacement.

I’m talking about what the Eagles thought, not what dopes like us thought.

I do think Dameon Pierce is a possibility. There are rumors the Texans want Barkley. If they sign him, they will probably trade Pierce.

That's a great point.  He is unique among his peers.  His stardom is unique because it is directly related to football and his ability to tell stories about what it is like to play the game.

Agree with this, especially considering the zone blocking schemes this team will continue to run. Jurgens was brought here with the same traits as Jason to attempt as smooth of a transition post Kelce as possible. If Jurgens can't fill that roll than they have to bring someone else in via draft or FA.

Nah people love to complain about the misses and ignore the hits

plenty of bellyaching about taking another scratch and dent bargain bin injured guy at that time

That's going to be the case every year given the history. Draft picks don't always pan out period. Damaged goods just adds another variable to the possibility of failure.

He looked OK in these plays moving.  I just think you're overstating the changes to the offense.  Jurgens will be the starter.  That's better for the team.  The fact that Dickerson had center versatility was important for the team.  It's not like they knew in 2021 that they would be able to draft Jurgens in 2022.

Not pretty good but very good. However,, he's 32.

Scherff to finish his career at RG here doesn't sound terrible. Otherwise maybe the apple of Stoutland's eye in Fautanu in round 2? I could see that. But I really want to go defense on day 1 and 2, with an outside shot of WR in round 2 if someone is sitting there too good to be true.

Maybe so, but I don’t believe they drafted Dickerson with the thought that he could or would be the center of the future. Obviously he can play it in a pinch if needed.

Can't say I agree with all of this. If you look closely at what Stout has him do, it's almost all straight-line stuff, exactly what this clip features. He's terrific at double teams, in-line blocking, traps, power, and he can get to the second level very well, but outside zone? Not so much. He's at least a step or two slower than Kelce or Jurgens. That's not his game.

I think a lot of the shortfall in our OL last year was due to the absence of Seumalo. He could do everything.

I feel you. I really like Fautanu as well but our defense needs major work.

Steen was a 3rd round pick and we probably shouldn't automatically pencil those picks in as future starters.  I don't mind if the Eagles draft a 1st/2nd round OL who translates directly to RG in the NFL, and Steen can be the swing OL for depth.  I also don't feel it necessarily makes Steen a bad pick.  It all depends how the board falls at #22.  If OL is the BPA, grab him.

I also wouldn't be shocked if the Eagles take a WR before the end of Day 2.  I'm not convinced AJ Brown will be here beyond another year or two.

They drafted him to play OG.  Playing center made him more valuable to the team.

I am not saying Dickerson is Kelce.  I am saying that I don't think the offense would change substantially with him at C.

This is Nate Herbig on an outside zone run:

The Eagles would run this play with Dickerson.  I think even the pin-pull stuff that Dickerson would be fine because he would be heading upfield after getting around the OG.

If the Eagles drafted a guard in round 2, that pretty much is admitting defeat that they did a poor job projecting Steen to guard. I suppose that could put him in play as the backup swing tackle and potential RT of the future, but his arm length is a problem.

Could be a Herremans who can play T despite the arm length.

I dont know that its admitting a mistake, because Steen isnt a proven bust. But I dont know how they wouldnt want to be SURE they have a starter in place for next year when we already know there will be a new starting center.

How is that your take?  Steen was a rookie that played limited snaps.  He was a 3rd round pick.  He didn't play terribly.  He could very well end up starting and play well.  The Eagles have no depth behind their starters.  Driscoll and Opeta are free agents.  Even if Kelce wasn't retiring they needed to add depth at O-line.   Adding depth in a draft where o-line is the deepest position is smart.

They aren't spending a second round pick on depth

They drafted Jurgens the following year and scouted the position heavily.  I think this is all the more reason that you cannot say them scouting OG in this draft has anything to do with Steen.

Ordered a white Kelce jersey. Now it's a white Kelce and green and kelly green McNabb (for the dog and then the player). All retired players FTW.

What was JJAW then?

I don’t think you spend a second round pick (Beebe) for depth. It would be plainly obvious that it is because they aren’t happy with what they’ve seen from Steen at guard.

there is a difference between not happy with what theyve seen, or havent seen enough yet. In which case they still need a solid insurance plan.

Scouting, no. Drafting, yes. Of course it would have something to do with Steen. They’d be drafting a guy with the expectation to start over Steen, not to compete with him.

Valid, but given their cap hell, if I'm in charge of the Broncos, I'm letting it ride this next season, then moving on from him next year with a much more palatable dead cap.  Best case scenario is that he plays well this season and then maybe you can trade him to some one who would be willing to give you a pick or two in return.

All that, of course, depends on whether you view Russ as a malcontent.  If he's a malcontent then it's probably a good idea to move on ASAP.

$89 in dead cap is insane.  You can barely field a team with what they have to work with.

Under your plan the dead cap is $86.6M. It's just not worth it to jump through that many hoops for $2M. Especially if he ends up getting hurt at some point in the year and then you are even more screwed.

The Eagles draft high picks with an eye on the future.  I mean Jurgens, Dillard, Sidney Jones, and Goedert were not drafted to immediately start.

If he beats out Steen he beats him out but I don't think that's a given.
