One thing that seems weird: We’re only saving $2M in cap space releasing him with a non-June 1. If we re-signed him, are we actually saving money?

We shall see.   But no worries, Howie knows what he's doing...

Really hope they don't re-sign Maddox. Even if the $ is right, you can't count on him.

Yup. The one year he managed to be counted on for every game was his contract year. I want no part of bringing him back.

We’d have to really sign some good, young pieces in FA for me to be agreeable to drafting a nickel on day 2 (and honestly, I’m talking the comp 3 and not either of our round 2 picks)

Sign Kenny Moore. Were set they're then.

Was a story where people grilled him for not getting the door and being a gentleman for his gf Hailee steinfeld. The reason was cause he ripped his pants at dinner.

Saves 2 million

I said at the time they gave him that deal, it was too much and an overpay by the Eagles.   And he was.  3 years (aka, 29 games in his case) at $5.7M per year... and having to swallow the large hit at the end when he's no longer on the team.

Get a feeling the eagles are gonna make a big trade. Not talking about Reddick either. i feel like they are gonna either get a corner, linebacker or maybe even a safety (tend to think they sign a safety with the amount in FA).

Just a reminder that Isaiah Rodgers has only played 14 slot snaps in his career.

You mean the guy that some people have already anointed as the next stud nickel?  That guy?

But then why release in the first place?  It's only a savings of 2 million unless I'm missing something.  Cut him and bring him back at 1.5?

The guaranteed money is all sunk cost. The only relevant question is do you pay him $7m to be on the roster this year. Clearly the answer is no. If they get him back for 1.5m, its a net save on the cap of $5.5m but split as 0.5m this year and 5m next year

Ummm, how do you figure?

Because if they didn't cut him... they'd be on the hook for the $6.8M salary this year.   (Of course, that makes the contract he got look even worse.)

So, the thinking is basically, if they bring him back at any number lower than the $6.8M salary... there is 'savings'.  Of course, the reality is that Howie never intended to pay him that as a salary.  The plan was always to either extend him and kick it down the road more this offseason with some sort of extension... or cut him one way or the other this year.  Either pre-June 1, or post-June 1.   Personally, I'd rather just move on from Mr. Glass.  Frankly, he's not all that great even when he is on the field.

Wonder if Kenny Moore could be of interest to the Eagles. Some speculated he could've been a trade deadline target. But he's coming off a really good season, so you'd be paying a high price for a nickel corner.

I'm afraid he is too small for his playing style to not kill him in the NFL.

They have to bring him back for a salary under 2 million for any realized savings.

And if I read his post right he implied a deferral to next year which isn’t the case.

Check the listing you posted... without cutting him, they keep him around and pay the full $9.6M this year AND still have the $5.5M next season in dead cap hit.   By cutting him now, the dead cap for next season accelerates to this year, but the salary for this year goes away.  That's the difference and where he's getting his numbers.

He's adding this year's cap number ($9.6M) and next year's dead cap number ($5.5M).   So, you are both right.   You are focused on the savings for 2024, while he's looking at the "savings" for 2024 AND 2025.     By cutting Maddox, they are saving $1.95M this year AND the $5.5M dead for next year.  (A total of $7.45M over the two seasons.)

If we were bringing him back it doesn’t make sense to cut and re-sign. Extending would have forestalled all the dead cap

I think Spotrac is right. Don't think he'd be included in free agent lists unless he was definitely a free agent. They usually only put current free agents on there.

They both are saying the same thing. Read it here from Spotrac

  • Process a Post 6/1 retirement or release on DE Brandon Graham, freeing up $1.5M after June 1st.
  • Process a Post 6/1 retirement or release on DT Fletcher Cox, freeing up $1.5M after June 1st.
