Why? Two-thirds of defensive plays are in the nickel. Further, if you look at our defense, we couldn't cover the slot receiver at all last year. In a zone defense, with two deep safeties, a slot corner is every bit as valuable as a boundary corner, and Fangio plays a ton of two-deep zone.

you can generally get those guys later than round 2.

They lack the size to play outside and lock down the elite players. They are often lacking top end speed. And they generally provide little to no versaitlity.

Any role on a football team is important. But they offer a lot of reasons to downgrade their value. Im not making this up. Its the way theyve been drafted. The way they have been paid in the NFL. (why Gardner-Johnson wanted to convert from nickel to safety). Its not a valued position. 2nd round is poor value.

to expand on this, Id prefer to see a guy like Bullard. He is 2 inches taller than Mikey, still has the 4.47 speed. And is a safety who some see as a nickel prospect. He brings the physicality to the position. And will be drafted later than Mikey.

If the price is right, I'm starting to like bringing in Simmons. Played for Fangio, still has gas left in the tank, and can be a leader to help Reed and Brown develop. If it's 2-3 years, $8-$10mm AAV, it makes sense to me. Call it 3 years, $30mm on the headline with the reality being 2 years, $17mm ($13mm non-guaranteed salary in year 3 to make it look better for the player).

My guess is someone like Baltimore will get overly aggressive for Barkley.  They're a running team at heart and Barkley would let them play that tough defense/ball control game they're built to play.

I want no parts of Dobbins.

I'd be happy with Swift and someone like AJ Dillon.

the Eagles and the Ravens both have fans who want Barkley or Henry or either.

the Ravens have a big back - if they keep him.  Gus Edwards.  Assuming he stays and Dobbins goes,  the Ravens could replace Robbins with a Dobbins like draft pick. Normal,  all around, Dobbins like typical running back with fresh legs.    the Eagles are due to lose Swift and Scott, leaving them with Gainwell.  The Eagles need a big back.   They also need a good back, to do the all around stuff that Swift did.   Barkley could be that,  Henry could be that - either would be big and good.  Someone like Dillon is big, might not be the all around guy they want.    The Eagles really really do need to same someone other than Hurts that is big and get more than the 2 yards Swift usually got when it was the 4th Q and the Eagles wanted to run out the clock.

Big backs are not easy to find. You didn't find them at the combine.   You had and have Braelon Allen.  Behind Allen at Wisconsin was Isaac G who transferred to Louisville and then had a great combine.  221 4.33.   The 2022 South Carolina team had 3 versatile big backs.   The fastest one was 221 4.39 Xaviar Legette, who is mostly a WR.  The biggest one was 241 2.62 Bell who transferred to Florida State and is typically a TE.   The medium one was a 4 star running QB coming out of high  school, and he spent time in college as a running QB,  doing the wildcat,  being a WR, and then being a big back his final year.  6'0 229.  Dakereon Joyner.

You could scout for big backs by looking at 2022 Wisconsin and 2022 South Carolina

For the same reason interior lineman in the early rounds are generally bad value.   They can be found later in the draft and still perform at a very high level.   OGs and Cs play 100% of the snaps, but that doesn't make them worthy of 1st or usually 2nd round pick value.   These are guys that teams generally find in the 3rd, 4th, 5th rounds.   In the Eagles' history, (recent past) their best interior OL have been:  Brandon Brooks (a former 3rd by Houston), Issac Seumalo (3rd round pick), and obviously... Jason Kelce (6th round pick).

Now they went and drafted interior OL very high in more recent years:  Dickerson (high 2nd round), Jurgens (2nd round), Steen (2nd round).   And the result of that is a very good OL, but horrific, historically bad defense.   They seem to have over invested at interior OL in recent years and I think it has bitten them hard elsewhere.   They've put a ton of money and draft capital into the interior OL and DL.  Generally, those spots don't get that level of commitment from teams.   Meanwhile, they've put almost no draft capital into their LBs and CBs and we've seen the results.

There's more than one way to build a roster, of course, but this team desperately needs some talent on the OUTSIDE on defense.   Putting more resources on the interior, at the exclusion of the outside on defense would be a mistake, IMO.   That said, what they need more than anything in the back 7 is some semblance of talent.   So, if they can find a decent player that can actually get on the field, that by itself would be a major coup for this front office.

A lot of truth in this BUT it doesn't incorporate the dreadful coaching we had on defense last year. And, of course, since this conversation developed out of assessing Sanristill, drafting him would directly address some of your/our concerns. Further, Sanristill addresses a specific need. We have NO ONE to play slot corner. Need + talent =value.

I think it's more coincidental than anything but it's possible it's also giving some insight as to how the NFL as a whole are viewing the S position and that it is possibly overvalued. There are some indicators that they might be trying to reset the market to be more favorable.

Probably due to proliferation of two deep zone schemes where a safety doesn't have to be a premier athlete, cover your responsibilities and come up and tackle, but you're not on an island like one deep where you want a fast free safety type.

Interesting thing Cosell shared: He talked to Blake Cashman’s agent and he said there was a lot of interest in his client, but Frankie Luvu’s agent told him he hasn’t gotten a lot of interest. Odd thing for the agent to share.

I want both, Frankie as the outside rusher, Cashmsn inside

A 3rd for Burns seems low.

It’s a buyers market, sign one or two of these veteran safeties to a 2 year deal.

Eskin thinks they could add two safeties. Eskin has been a little bit of a heater lately since his Kellen Moore story.

He turns 32 in May.

So much word salad you don't need to be on a diet

Not sure what it's worth but ESP feels McKinney is happening

She tweets like she’s either trying to sound smart or like she’s trying to fill out a two-page essay that you can only use 12 point font and double spacing.

Here's his thought process

*literally any top play at any position available to sign or trade*

"Eagles should do this"

Sadly, the only thing JK Dobbins is good for is keeping the treatment room busy.  Very talented, but not worth anything more than a vet minimum deal with incentives. Dude is cooked
