Edelman and Landry can play well on the outside, so they aren’t good comparisons.

Beasley and Amendola are both better than 2019 Ward and aren’t great fits in Philly either.

Sez you. I'm not being flip here (well, maybe a little) but the fact is these are purely your opinions. Amendola bombed here but whose fault was that? Also, he took some time to learn how to play at this level. Do not mistake that offense with what Doug is running now. Edelman and Landry are not bigger, stronger, or faster. What they had was teammates who drew the best CBs in coverage. Further, playing against zone coverages takes brains and rapport with the QB; it doesn't take 4.3 speed.

Ward demonstrated at the end of the year that he can be successful in this offense and, with better WRs on the outside, he can only get better, IMHO. Why? Because he knows how.

I want to be clear that my criticisms of Ward are based almost entirely on his actual film from 2019. I’m not nearly as comfortable projecting him to improve to a level that I want out of our slot receiver.

2017 Agholor is pretty ideal for what I want, if the Eagles really want a dedicated slot receiver. Preferably, we’d just move everyone around based on matchups.

Go habs!

What’s the downside of finding a better player than Wentz, Sanders, Lane, Cox, etc...

You only have so many resources to use, and Ward has shown plenty of potential in a very limited opportunity as a slot to not give him a chance to develop.

No downside to having a better player. It's a nonsense question however. What, for example, is the downside of having a better receiver than Jerry Rice to play wideout?:

I'm gonna say the one of the rooks had better beat him out in short order.

We aren't talking about Jerry Rice. Ward couldn't even make the squad until we were pretty much desperate and what he could do was get open on short routes and actually catch the ball. He was okay but really not worthy of being in the slot if you can have better choices.

I appreciate Ward for what he did but let's not pretend that he's something he's not.

Getting open on short routes and catching the ball are what good slot receivers do!!!!

If they beat him, then they deserve it. I personally don’t view unproven rookies in year 1 drafted 4th round or later to be better than what Ward has shown us he can do.

There’s a lot to unpack here, and I don’t even know where to begin, but I’ll try.

1) No one is mistaking Amendola’s time in Philly with our current offense. We’re talking about Amendola in today’s offense.

2) If Ward can become the elite technicians and have elite hands like Edelman and Landry, great. The odds are heavily against him there.

3) I don’t think Ward was all that successful. I’ve outlined why many times.

2017 Agholor was a good slot. What 2019 Ward did was JAG stuff.

He has nearly IDENTICAL measurables to Randall Cobb, Golden Tate and Christian Kirk.  He ran an unofficial 4.49.   Cooper Kupp is a good player, I like him but the only thing he has on Ward is size.  Ward is a 4.49 guy.  Kupp is 4.62.  There is no reason why he can't produce like them.

I would love to have CeeDee or Fitz too.

Those guys are all significantly more talented and better than Ward too.

That's where he tops out. Wouldn't you like more?

We'll see. As someone said if Ward stays in the slot for long something went wrong

If Greg Ward was actually good at separating, he would be the unquestioned starter in the slot. But he's not.

Disagree. Way more likely Ward builds on what he did in the slot last year, than one of the 3 late rookies taking over.

Alshon will be back at some point.

I'd like a whole season's worth, yes.

He played seven games and caught 28 passes. That works out to, um, four catches a game. In a 16-game season that would be 64 catches. Average gain was 9.1 yards. That works out to a little under 600 yards. I'll take that as the more and be content, though I think he'll get closer to 800 yards IF IF IF we have a season. JMHO, of course.

Anyway, that's my more.

We should have 2-3 receivers ahead of him and a healthy Ertz. That will suppress his numbers and snaps.

Anyone know why or how Chad Johnson is breaking down film on the Eagles training camp?

Supposedly Jackson sent him some clips

And that was a BS penalty/power play

He’s easily the 3rd best TE in the NFL. To some people here that’s not good enough. Gotta be the best. Oh and if you do happen to be the best, then they don’t wanna pay him top money because he’s a TE.

Ertz is our best receiver, came up clutch for us in the Super Bowl, and loves being in philly and playing with Carson. There’s no reason to let him leave at all.

He is also definitely "near” the level of kittle considering he had the same amount of yards the past 3 season and 12 more TDs than Kittle in that time. Kittle is a much better blocker, but Ertz is much better in the red zone.

Same reason a ton of really good players move on — cost.

The Eagles will evaluate Ertz’s worth relative to their offensive philosophy at the end of this season.  There’s no question at all that Ertz has been force fed the ball the past 2 seasons; last season was out of necessity — 2018 was to the detriment of the offense as a whole.

I don’t think anyone disputes that Ertz is a really good player.  I would dispute that he’s worth anywhere close to $14M per season — and that might be the minimum it takes to keep him.

So Houston = no fans

Dallas = 50%

Ok then

He already played roughly 50 percent of his snaps in the slot, so we saw him plenty vs linebackers and nickels. It wasn’t impressive. Unfortunately he doesn’t have the speed to be a vertical slot so he doesn’t fit well with Goedert and Ertz, and him being on the field in an ideal world (a healthy and good Reagor and DJax) means we’re taking out a better player to put Ward on the field to run similar routes as the TEs anyway.

I dont think desean or reagor are coming off the field for ward.

I imagine ward will be the slot in 3 WR sets and in 2 wide either with 2 RBs or more likely 2 TEs it will be desean and reagor or desean and. JJ as JJ was/ is viewed more of an X receiver.

If they want to bring in Ward as the 4th WR in 4 and 5 Receiver sets than thats ok.

From what Pederson has said it sounds like they have a bigger role for ward than 4th WR but well see.

After pumphrey was drafted all summer we heard about Dougs " pony" formation with pumphrey being in a two back set, that pony formation for pumphrey went right out the window in the trash after about the first practice when all the coaches realized pumphrey couldnt play.

Theyve seen a bit more of ward and hes actually played in games so id lean towards believing the plan they have for Ward is a bit more conctrete.

Well see im not expecting much from Ward, i think hell make the team and play some and make a few plays here and there which isnt bad for an undrafted qb turned WR.

Could well be. By the same token, he'll have lesser players covering him, so he should have a higher YPC. Last year he was drawing the second-best CB by the end of the season. Ertz got the #1.

All these rookie burners can, yes, run, but their ability to read defenses and find the holes in zones just ain't gonna be there for a while. Faced with inexperienced but fast receivers teams figure to play a lot of zone against us. To get them out of that you need zone beaters...like Ward.

Either way, I expect more from him and, from what Doug has been saying, he expects more too.

If our receivers can all stay healthy and the rookies show they can play, our offense should be terrifying, with or without Ward. Situationally, however, I want a zone beater and the prospect of having everybody healthy all year seems prohibitively unlikely, if past is prologue.

Finally, who do you want on the field - Tarzan - who runs into his own guys as he bumbles about in his routes, or Jane - who simply gets open and catches the ball?
