Yup. It's one thing to claim you don't like the Hurts pick. Okay, fine, everyone's entitled to their opinion. But it's irritating when the argument against the pick cites history, and yet the history actually goes against the argument.

Exactly. I wasnt a huge fan of the hurts pick but agree with your above statement!

And some say cancel culture is a bad thing

That comment was the sort of no excuse/no second chance comment that got you canned at the large, diverse, multinational where I worked.  Anything like that on the clock was not tolerated. One strike and you were out.  We went through anti harassment training every year.

So Brennaman was the guy paired with Chris Spielman the last 4 years.  At first I was thinking he was one of the play by play guys I enjoyed, but in this case it was Spielman I've grown to like in that duo.  He's gotten much better since that first game he did in Detroit (that Mathews fumbled away for us) in which is was way biased for his former team and it pissed me off bigtime.  He's now become one of the better analysts IMO.

Then I was thinking Brennaman was the play by play guy teamed with Charles Davis.  But that was Kevin Burkhardt, who I really like.

So losing Brennaman to me is no worse than losing Tessatore from the MNF gig.  No biggie.

Later during the game he apologized but cut his apology off halfway to call a home run and give a score  update, then basically said he knew he was going to get fired and signed off. It was bizarre

Yeah that's not one you come back from.  Points for signing off professionally instead of going all Brockmire I guess.

Great scene for anyone who doesn't get the Brockmire reference.  Very Very NSFW:

Brennaman always sucked, that was my joke.

The other problem with the history argument is we don’t have enough info on the other side. I’m sure there’s been plenty of teams that liked a QB in the second round with a franchise type QB but went in another direction and hit on a pick at another position that also contributed to a title/championship but we don’t have that info. And some that flopped. That’s critical in talking about it.

i didn’t like the pick but i haven’t used history shows aspect of why i didn’t like it. I go more to value aspect.

Part of why you have a swing tackle is because you have a guy who can play both sides. Those guys are rare. It's not just a matter of putting the other hand in the dirt.

Right now we have one guy who has demonstrated that he can be that guy - Seumalo. There's a guy who can play all five OL positions. We've had guys in the past that could play four - Herremans being one of them - but never five, at least to my recollection. So, given that, do we have any candidates for four positions other than Seumalo? Maybe Pryor. Maybe JP. My guess is that Driscoll is being groomed for that too, although I expect they'll keep him in the G-C-G group for his rookie year.

It helps that we can activate eight OL this season. To me that looks like the starting five plus Pryor and Driscoll and...? I would like it to be Mailata, but strictly at RT. If Dillard gets hurt, swing JP over and plug Pryor in at RG. If Seumalo gets hurt, it would probably be Pryor at LG. If Kelce gets hurt it would be Seumalo moving to C and Pryor at LG. If JP gets hurt, definitely Pryor at RG. And if Lane gets hurt I'd like to see Mailata at RT. A guy who could figure in here is Herbig; I'm thinking strictly at RG but I don't know - I haven't seen enough of him to make an intelligent assessment. He's big enough for the position but I don't know how he moves.

JMHO based on little bits and pieces and a lot of guesswork.

I have to believe one of the reserves has to play C. My guess is Herbig as I don’t think Juriga is anywhere close to ready yet.  I think that is why we are seeing Herbig playing some RG, C and sixth OL. He actually looks like he slimmed a bit this year although he still leads in the Hank Fraley look-a-like contest. I do remember at the combine being surprised at his feet in the OL drills last year.  I called him a slug and I am pretty sure I was wrong

What I hate about the seven on sevens and then the WR/DB catch games is no one in the media is over covering the DL and OL.  Not a single shot of that on film that I saw today.  Football is won in the trenches.  I want to see how Opeta handles DTs. I want to see if Herbig can pull.  I want to see Juriga snap and punch.  I want to see if Mailata can handle bull rushes and other stunts.  I want to see Tega Wanogho keep his arms up and slide in pass blocking.  Maybe tomorrow in the 10-10-10s we will see some of that.

I also have to say, I kind of want to see Rush on Peters.  Does that punch with anchor move the mountain.  Anthony Rush is a big man.

Daniel, Daniel, Daniel.  Know when Howie and team are using you for Spads like propaganda.  The guy could be playing like Thorson and they would be feeding you the same.  Hurts has to show me he can read multiple options.  Mills said on the 40 yarder that he held the ball too long. He would do that in college and then take off.  I actually think Doug was truthful on the depth chart of QBs today.

The statement by the OP was that spending high picks on  a backup qb never works out or will never work out.

Another said what about hostetler and i said what about young?

As for not being able to compare those instances against other instances that never happened, yes that would be difficult🤔

I don't think it's a "secret" that Sudfeld is the backup QB...until he isn't...likely at some point later in the season, imo.

Until then, look at Hurts to be used in specific red-zone and short yardage situations, imo.

Problem is those situations happened you just don’t hear about them. Doesn’t mean at one point a team was not considering it and then decided to take a position player besides a backup QB. And that positional player played a pivotal role in a title or team’s success. So you have 3 we’ve discussed. There easily could be 3 or more we never knew the team thought about backup and went elsewhere to a position that paid off bigger dividends then if they went backup.  That’s very likely and just as likely when a team went QB high instead of another position.

pure hypothetical on my part. 2007 what if the eagles were down to Eric weddle and Kevin kolb. Went kolb and thought he could be the backup and either become the starter or get value back. Meanwhile weddle solves a ton of The safety issues for a long period of time especially when dawk left. They got value back for kolb (still wasted it) but weddle wound up being a pro bowl caliber player For 8-10 years. That’s somewhat Of that I’m saying. We don’t have those stories to show the opposite side that very well may have occurred. Or in 2015 let’s say hypothetically the vikings were down to Bryce petty and hunter went within 20 picks of each other.  Obviously made the right choice. Could also have 2012 where the eagles took kendricks and curry in the second and could’ve taken Wilson. (That story we somehow have).  We don’t have most of those stories to compare to see how many of those success or failure to compare to the two you brought up.

Yeah that’s not one you can just say was a mistake and move on. Troubling the kind of things people will say in the work place. You know it’s worse in privacy.

I always liked Brennaman; solid on both the NFL and MLB telecasts.  He’s put in 30 years already so he could just retire quietly if he doesn’t get another gig or podcast or something similar.

I sure wish someone would leave a mic on around Jim Nantz, though — he’s dreadful at everything he does.  "Hello Friends”

Sure glad the Eagles got rid of that Foles distraction for Carson.

I was kind of excited that there was no preseason, because I wouldn't have to read all of the comments of some people on here losing their minds over preseason games.

Turns out you guys can analyze every position from effing tweets. 🙄

In fairness, Mills has demonstrated with regularity that a QB holding the ball more than 1.5 seconds is too long — for him, anyway

Hightower looks good in shorts... Even though its one on ones, his cuts are crisp and his speed is evident. We will have to see if that continues.

Someone refresh my memory... how were the camp reports for JJAW last year?
