Report: Hurts-Sirianni relationship remains 'work in progress'

The relationship between Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and head coach Nick Sirianni remains a "work in progress," Matthew Washington of theScore reports.  This accordidng to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

Despite the Eagles jumping to a 10-1 mark to begin the 2023 campaign, each of those victories was a "grind," and "things weren't exactly perfect behind the scenes and from a culture standpoint," Russini adds.

Philadelphia lost five of its final six games of the regular season, with the disconnect between Sirianni and Hurts reportedly an issue prior to the team's struggles.

Among the main problems between the coach and franchise quarterback was Sirianni's conservative play-calling, according to Russini. Sirianni's outspoken nature also apparently conflicted with Hurts' reserved personality.

Philadelphia finished the 2023 season eighth in yards per game (354.4) and seventh in points per contest (25.5). The organization dismissed offensive coordinator Brian Johnson after the season, but the Eagles' conservative and run-first approach, especially in the red zone, was "100% Sirianni's offense you were watching," Russini notes.

The Eagles hired Kellen Moore as their new offensive coordinator and Vic Fangio to run the defense. This is the second consecutive offseason that Philly replaced both coordinators.

Sirianni hasn't called offensive plays for Philadelphia in the last few years but admitted earlier this week that giving up the duties hasn't been easy for him, per Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff Neiburg. However, he added that he's confident it's the best outcome for the team and sees "a lot of positives from it."

Name a guy on the roster that no one expects to have any realistic shot to earn a prominent role this season and is on the bottom third of the roster who you think has the best chance to earn significant playing time. I'll go with Tyler Hall. I think the odds are against him making it given Rodgers, DeJean, Maddox could all play slot corner. But I would put it as a non zero chance he really impresses in camp and preseason and he earns the slot CB job.

Mekhi Becton is my guy.

I don't think he's a bottom third roster guy I think he'll be a primary backup who will compete for a starter's job and is a lock to make the team. I'm talking guys at the very back end of the roster who most think have little chance to make the roster. One of those who could surprise and earn a job in camp.

I suspect he'll start the season on the PUP (allows them to keep another DB), then have the window to get ready to play when he's 100% cleared.

Really no reason to rush him. It's not like he's a proven starter who just needs to get the rust off, he's a work in progress like the other young DBs.

I think your best bet to get the most is a player for player swap with him. I’d take a 6/7 if that’s all available but try to get a player instead.

I'm good with Thelien in that case. Seems like a good fit with this team.  Obviously you'd like to see if Campbell or Smith emerge in slot but neither is a great bet

Maybe Kempski misspoke or maybe I misheard him, but he said to Sheil on the Ringer podcast that he thinks John Ross is the favorite for WR3. I figured he's the biggest long shot of anyone so that was interesting.

What day does camp open this year? It's gotta be coming up soon.

I think McCollum wins the 4th S spot and becomes a key ST contributor. With a ST role keeping him active on game days, he will see some snaps on defense as well. Honestly, I don't really predict any fringe player will see significant playing time outside of ST.

I'd be more than surprised if he even made the roster to be honest

Becton if Lane or Jordan get hurt.

Without injuries, I'd say McCallen Castles has a straight path to playing time...

Of him not seeing the field and forcing things. He was 100% to blame especially when he had someone in front of him for the first down.

Remember Sirianni took the blame for that play call when AJ came out later and said he and Hurts improvised that last play where Hurts got intercepted.

For ALL the Eagles players this year... I am not interested in your talk. Performance on the field is what this year is all about. SHOW us.

BRADBERRY!!!

Seriously, I'd like to see a backup TE surprise us.

I think a FB called Nate Ilaoa has a chance. Has great tape from Hawaii and a nasty streak when he blocks.

Fair enough. IMHO, a year of Stoutland will make Becton as good as either Mailata  or Lane. He’s potentially Jonathan Ogden. Crazy, right? We have two of the seven best OTs in the league. Benton could give us three of seven.
What does Howie do?

Of course, Dickerson and Becton would be a scary combo at guard.

Lane retiring soon gives Becton a spot.

I'm...skeptical of Becton being able to stay healthy and do this. Some OTs are just too big.

Ojomo.

I could see him getting a lot of snaps in the DL rotation. I like him a lot and think he will carve out a legit NFL career.

I read her article.  Sounds like pure speculation for the most part. Not convinced she has any sources.
